Sorry, you all are gonna hate, but i believe Welker is going to be the best off-season pick up of the past year. His speed and sharpness, even if only in pre-season, looks impressive.

:)

Re: Welker best offseason pick-up

I've thought for a while that he would lead the team in catches and this past game just made my confidence in that opinion grow. I don't see him having great yards per catch or a lot of TDs, he'll just pick up 1st downs and keep the chains moving, much like Troy Brown has done for a while.

You are INSANE. Adalius? Moss? Stallworth? Meriweather?

I think you have a little too much man love for the little White guy.

hmm you're picking those 4 because they are more talented or because they are black?

I am glad you used future tense because the title sounds like you crowned him already....I think he is looking better and better and as Breer said he and Brady are syncing up. It will be tough for him to wind up the best offseason pick-up but he should prove to be a really good move.

DONT TURN THIS INTO A RACE THREAD!

Back on topic.

I completely agree that Welker might be the one of the most important guys but im going to still have to go with Adalius Thomas being #1.

Guy gives you way too much flexibility at LB and is one of the fastest and strongest players on the field at all times.

In preseason alone he has been a real run stuffer.

Its between Welker and Thomas.

I know Welker is going to be good. I hope Thomas is.

If all the FA pickups play up to what we hope they do I'd have to think Thomas and Moss will have bigger impact. But Thomas hasn't yet had a major impact and so far Moss has been the invisible man.

Already got my Welker jersey and I think it will be a collective impact from all the great free agents Beoli brought in discluding Chad Brown of course he's too old to play linebacker at a high level all hell Justin Rogers!:D

I absolutely love Welker, and I believe he'll be a huge factor on our team. But, I think Thomas was a bigger acquisition. Without Thomas, our LB core is very questionable.

While I think I'm going to love Welker there is no doubt in my mind that Adalius Thomas was the best offseason addition. So versatile on defense and he is f'ing fast for someone who weighs in at 290 pounds. He will make the defense even better than it is.

1. Adalius
2. Welker
3. Moss
4. Stallworth
5. Morris
6. Merriweather
7. K. Brady

I would put Moss above Welker. Welker is a good receiver and a good returner but its not like we had mediocre returners last year. Kevin Faulk was a pretty solid PR. With Moss we are getting a true #1 receiver which we haven't had for a while. And Moss was a great steal for a 4th round pick.

Welker will become a fan fave quickly and is a significant addition.. the same with Thomas, sometimes these comparisons are like comparing raisins and grapefruit.. both are really good and both will make this team better.

I think Welker is a underated pick up, but the best pick up all offseason is Thomas.. I was very content with the adition of Stallworth... Moss is just another asset..

Okay we don't have a LB core. There's not a U.S. Marine Core either. It's corps.

Corps, corps, corps.

Dabgummit.

Think about them being not quite corpses yet. Or maybe we only havest them when they're ready, like crops. Or how about, since they're full of pi$$ and vinegar, there has to be some "P" in them.

I don't care how you remember, just please, please remember it's "corps", or I will burst a blood vessel in my bloated mutant forehead.

Oh yeah and also... Welker may well end up right up at the top. Nice thing is, with Welker, we have several years to find out. :)

True but if someone wants to refer to the Linebackers as the central part of the defense, it would the core of the defense.
I know it's the D Line but it doesn't fit in this context.

As for the pickups what's interesting is that while the roster will turn over about 10-11 spots ( 20%) which is the annual norm for the Pats, most of the pickups are veterans, Moss, Welker, Stallworth, Thomas, Brady, Morris, Washington ?,Rivers and there will in all likelihood be only 3-4 rookies on the 53 man roster, Meriweather, K. Brown, Baugher and probably Richardson/Rogers.
It reminds me of the Celtics teams of the mid60's when they were in the midst of their run and it was primarily a veteran team who had played together for a long time and the philosophy was " if it's not broken, don't start changing things".

Not to disparage Welker - who along with AD will bridge us into the next dynasty - but if Welker went into this season with the same deep threat (or lack thereof) that the team had last year, there's no point in being excited with him leading the teams in catches.

Caldwell had 61 last year - a pretty darn good year overall statistically - but no matter what the stats about our offense told us, our eyeballs knew that Defenses had no respect for our deep game, were stacking the line, and hindering the running game, double teaming Watson, and putting all kinds of hits and pressure on Brady.

The stats will not show it but Moss and Stallworth are the most significant additions for the offense.

I think Welker will be in single coverage underneath. If they can get some good blocking downfield we could get some big yards. There will be many designed plays for him this year I think, key 3rd down plays especially.

Faulk is also along the lines of Welker..i don't know who would be quicker. I love Faulk just as much as the next Pats Fan and I think he is awesome, however I think Welker may be a bit quicker. I think he is going be the 'x' factor on offense.

AD though, as all of you I think correctly point out, is going to be a star player on a team known for it's defense.

I should have pointed out our key offseason offensive pick up. Even in the face of Morris, who I think should be used a lot this year, and Moss who we all know has crazy skills.

In this offense, Welker is going to be key...just my thoughts....

My bad, shoulda clarified the post.:)

I definately see your point, however Welker may be able to come in and perrform when these guys are covered, which is my point...
