Sammy Morris - in a word...solid??

Our need at RB has nothing to do with Welker. bb and pioli try to go into the season with 5 running backs. In the past cpuiple of years, several running backs have been injured for part of the season or on the PUP list.

Given where we've been, and our currnet personnel, I don'y understand why we haven't added a 5th back.

They didn't try that hard or else he would have been here.

I know nothing about Leonard, but Welker is a fine WR. I can't say that I would rather trade someone who plays a position that NE absolutely needs (slot WR) for a position that NE has decently covered.

Now, if you want to say that NE could have not signed Morris and used #28 to get Leonard I have no issue with that.
That is one complicated equation, isn't it? It includes Leonard's performance, Maroney's health, Morris' performance, the 49'ers season record, and what the Pats do with that pick.

Gives me a headache thinking about it. Best case, Maroney stays healthy and Morris is a solid role player and that SF pick is a star.

I suppose I should suspend my judgment of Morris until a few games into the season. Then we will know what he really is. The guy runs hard but he ain't no Corey Dillon. You know what we really need? A promising RB we can stick on the PS.

Do you think that Morris is better, worse, or roughly the same talent as Antoine Smith?

I think the contributions of Smith are greatly underestimated by posters here. I don't think that Morris is as dependable as Smith. We need a mudder to grind out yards.

Antowain in the first three months? Morris, probably.

Antowain in the late season and playoffs? Smith easily.

That said, Morris is a lot more versatile than Smith. He is here because he can back up both Maroney and Faulk, as well as contribute to special teams. There is defintely value in someone who can do a lot of things like that. Very often it frees up a spot on the roster for another needy area.

Regardless, I don't believe that Morris has ever rushed for a zone style team before. It will take time to determine if he can do it or not. Considering that BB has now tried twice to get the guy I have to think that Morris is better than most here think.

That's really the key and a reminder that it's only preseason.

Sammy Morris...in a word - JAG-plus.

I know that Beoli has a great track record but it's not like they have swung and missed ever (can you say Monty). Who is A-train playing for these days? He's the very definition of a "mudder".

Monty Beisel was signed as a Davis or Izzo type player, a STer, emergency backup. After the injuries and retirement, all of a sudden, we expected Beisel and Chad Brown to be our startng 3-4 ILB's, notwithstanding the fact that neither had had played the positions before.

Plus, BB most certainly would not have targetted him *twice*.

seems like he is pretty good for what the pats want,,a back up rb who can catch

ill take season stats over preseason games...or is miami's line so much better then the pats?

I think that bb and pioli are always open to starting the season with five running backs. If the Mills experiment is over, then we could see a fifth back brought in. I've been pushing for that since before the draft. I cringe whenever I hear Morris or Maroney being the substitute for Dillon in the red zone. At least we've replaced Seymour in the redzone, but that didn't work out well. Hochstein is now injured. I'm old fashioned enough to want bruisers like Dillon running the ball and full time fullbacks or tight ends blocking.

BTW, I do like the addition of Morris. He is a backup runner and a backup returner. As was said, there needs to be a plan if Maroney is injured, and it shouldn't be Faulk as the only running back option.

I see nothing wrong with using an experienced pulling Guard, as a endzone FB.

I don't either, if he could block better than our fullback.

I wasn't supposed to tell anyone this but I don't think BB will mind. Our new short yardage specialist is Vince Wilfork. That is why he dropped all the weight. There you go, now you have it.

Question?

There has been some recent talk on Jet boards about sighning Dillon for depth due to the Jones injury.

Is Sammy better then Corey as of today?

Would anyone want Dillon to take up a roster spot on the Pats this year.

If Dillon is willing to be a backup and short yardage runner (ala Bettis), I would be more than happy to have him back.

Under those conditions I would want him also.

If Corey goes tom the Jests he is *dead* to me...*dead* I tells ya...

Yup, Dillon shouldn't go to the jets because he used to play for the patriots and they don't want him any more. Please explain, other than the fact that you dislike any player who plays for the jets.

Easy, I hate the Jets and all who sail in her...
