Pats cut Malone and Kenny Smith

FOXBOROUGH -- The Patriots released punter Tom Malone and veteran defensive end Kenny Smith today.

The release of Malone means that Danny Baugher, for the time being at least, has a stronghold on the punting job.

More on these moves in a bit.

This means the Pats will have to only cut, at the most, 3 players by next Tuesday. It could be as few as 1, as the Pats were over 80 players at some points this training camp, meaning there are some exemptions or such we are missing.

The rebuilding of the STs is proceeding. The only ST over thirty is now Larry Izzo.

I would have thought that UDFA DE would have gone before Kenny Smith. The competition at Defensive Line is Seymour, Wilfork, Warren, Green. Wright, and between three guys for two jobs. Rashad Moore, NT DT; LeKevin Smith, NT, DE; and Santonio Thomas, DE; with the Rashad and LeKevin on the inside track.

Malone was on my 2Bcut list since the close of NFLE
... as was Josh. So, yes, somewhat a no-brainer (if even i got it.)

This is a major vote of confidence because
it leaves no one else to punt,
telling Baugher beyond dispute, You Are Our Guy!

Significance is in the timing of the cut ... not the fact of the cut.
