If the Patriots were to go 1-1 in the first 2 games, both of which will be tough battles,At New York Jets and at Home against San Diego which team would you rather beat ?

The Jets who are a division rival and could drop the Patriots a game behind in the division in the early going?

OR

The Chargers who are most likely going to be going deep into the playoffs and this game could be a matter of home field edge.

Which team would be your choice as most important to win?

(Of course we expect to go 2-0 but if we don't what is your choice? -
0-2 is not an acceptible response for the trolls who hang around here)

Definitley SD. The Jets will finish 8-8 at best. I would really like to see them get home field and that game vs. SD could determine if an AFCCG is here or SD.

We are 1-6 favorites to win the division. My choice would be to beat the superchargers.

The division is the most important thing. Last year NE won two division games to start the season and that was huge. The Jets game is more important. Since the realignement to eight divisions only one team won the SB without winning their division. In that case the division champ Bengals QB Palmer was injured for the game on the first snap. Besides if we lose to the Jets the Chargers are doomed. NE never loses two in a row.

I understand what you're saying here because in recent history New England has rarely lost two games in a row. But, they actually lost two games in a row just last year for the first time in 2-3 years.

What??????????????????

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

After looking it up the Steelers were the only wildcard team to even make it to the championship game in either league since 2000. In 2000 there were six divisions instead of eight.

PS I know NE lost to the Colts and then to the Jets the following week. An anomoly.

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

if they beat the Chargers, then it would show that the defense is going to be impregnable. Chargers have maybe the best o-line, fullback, and runningback. If you can stop all of that, then you're pretty good. That would mean that if they lost to the Jets, that it would be more of an abberation--one of those week 1 anomalies.

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

I think an "any given Sunday" loss to the Jets would be better because I don't think they will win the division even with that head to head. We'll still win the division. Beating the Chargers the second game may give us a home game against them down the road in the playoffs. I'd rather have that game at home.

either way the sky will fall

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

I think it'd be more important to beat the Chargers. We split with NYJ last year and still won the division. I also think the jests will take a step back this year. Whereas a win over the Chargers could be WAY more important in the winter months, it would be the difference of 3,050 miles!

Weren't the same things said about the early Denver loss last season. Last season NE lost two games to division foes and would have had a bye with one win and would have tied SD at 14-2 with two wins. I would rather NE start 1-1 with a game up on the Jets because the Jets travel to Baltimore for week 2 and there is no way Noodle arm will beat there speedy D. So having the Jets in an 0-2 hole is way more important. Or we both can be 1-1 but they are a game up. I don't see why that is better. Start things off right.

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

I'd rather they beat SD. The only way NY competes for the division is if NE wins fewer than 11 games, in which case NE isn't winning a championship anyway.

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

Maybe I'm missing the point.

Why do we want to lose one of our first two games?

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

i think we will be 2-0 but if that scenario (1-1) should happen i would prefere a win against the Nyj as they are in the AFC East

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

I LOVE the fact that the Pats are playing a team like SD, with a complete new coaching staff, EARLY in the season.

Pats win both games.

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

This is an interesting thread in that it certainly gets you thinking.

My choice, I would rather beat the Chargers seeing as how that should have much bigger implications down the road.

Of course, coming right out of the gate to the Jets will have tremendous media implications, just picture some of the potential headlines after a week 1 loss.......

"SUPER BUST"
"MOSS OR MOLD?"
"WAS THAT BRADY's BABY PLAYING QB"

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

Certainly a lot of disrespect for the Jets in this thread. I'm not willing to assume that they have no chance to win the division.

So the option is to give the Jets a game in the division standings and a leg up on the tiebreaker, or a possibility of playing San Diego on the road (where we beat them last year) in a hypothetical playoff game in the case we happen to finish with identical records? And most people would prefer we beat the Chargers?

That's ridiculous. Pure Ego, and little sense.

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

First things first! Beat the Jets, winning the division is the first step. Don't give them any hope.

The Chargers should be a playoff rival but there is too much water to flow under the dam before we concern ourselves with playoff posturing.

Re: A look ahead into the first 2 regular season games - If the Patriots were to go 1

I'd rather win the Jets game, even though a loss in our home opener would be tough. You can't get a bye without winning the division, so a division game is more important.

I also think the Jets game is the one we are more likely to win. I had the "pleasure" of watching the Jets vs. Vikings on Fri. night and Chad Pennington looked just awful. Two INTs returned for TDs, both lame ducks just thrown up, only one under pressure.

I am already worried about LT. Hopefully he will be rusty since he hasn't been playing much in the preseason from what I hear. Our run D looked okay the other night, but I wonder how our old timers are going to stack up against the young gun. Maybe they can assign Adalius Thomas to stick to LT like glue.
