There really aren't many roster decisions to make

I think Childress wins the "54th man" award for the most transactions in one year. He could be signed, cut, signed to the PS, cut and resigned half a dozen times this year as injuries and the inevitable wear and tear on special teamers mount. I think JeRod Cherry holds the record for one season.

Unless he gets picked up by the Jets.

Thanks. I knew that there was some guy who seemed to be in and out of the door on a weekly basis, but I thought it was a cornerback or safety (not Hank Poteat!)

Vinnie...?

Vinnie the QB that we just signed?

Yes.
Vin is here to learn the O and prepare for the shadow roster where he's available without taking a 53 spot. Only if Cassel is really injured will Vin be on the 53 September 9th.

okay--just kind of confused me--i suppose that we could sign him, and then cut him again in a couple of weeks

Good catch. I have added Richardson to the Practice Squad.

I'd be equally shocked if Richardson is cut outright. At the very least, the guy has shown some skills and will be placed on the practice squad. I think he has a decent chance at the 53 man roster myself, particularly if Samuel continues to hold out.

You might be thinking of Sean Morey, but no one has Tuitele beat.

I'd keep Richardson and cut James if he is as bad as people say. I didn't personally notice his play, but I've never seen a player get all negative comments from writers and posters.

Meriweather is not a cornerback, he's a safety. Tebucky Jones was a cornerback this time of year too.

If James can't play anymore, I'd try to pick up a vet who could still play corner in a pinch if our starters went down.

I'd say Richardson and Wilson should be working at corner.

Nickel is fine for Meriweather. Troy can play the slot and he's not a corner either.

Tony "Cut Bait' Gaiter might give him a run for his money.
Guy was SO short he'd get lost in the grass when they didn't mow the field.

Tiny nitpick: three, including Baugher.

Baugher isn't a rookie, though it's a fuzzy line.

Career Overview

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baugher, 22, was originally signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent on May 5, 2006 and was released by the Bengals on July 30. The 5-foot-10-inch, 194-pound punter attended the University of Arizona, where he was one of three finalists for the Ray Guy award as the nation’s top punter as a senior in 2005. That season he earned first-team All-America honors from Pro Football Weekly and third-team All-America recognition from the Associated Press. In his four seasons at Arizona (2002-05), Baugher recorded school records with 225 punts and 9,476 yards, averaging 42.1 yards per punt for his college career. His last name is pronounced "BAHG-er". Signed by the Patriots to the practice squad as a free agent on October 10, 2006.

Quick question re: PUP

IIRC, only players who have not practiced can be placed on PUP meaning that once a player is activated and steps foot onto the practice field at any time during camp, he is no longer eligible for the PUP. I am correct?

I ask this wondering if Kyle Brady, who has practiced but who is now injured, can be placed on PUP.

As you said Brady (the big fat one) can not be placed on PUP since he took the field during a practice session. Pre-practice walk abouts don't count.

meh, he's only half-rookie.
It's interesting that on the roster they put him down as a year 1 player, not as a rookie. I'd call him a quasi-rook. But then again he's a punter, they aren't real football players; they don't have souls.

I guess I haven't given a lot of thought to the term "rookie." Does the clock start running from the time the player is draft-eligible? To me, since Baugher never spent a regular-season day on a roster or practice squad, he's a rookie. Or more honestly, since I counted him back when we were predicting the number of rookies who make the roster, he's a rookie! :D

Yes, "first-year player" is one of those funny terms to put on someone that isn't a rookie but isn't a second year/veteran either.

He's a Redshirt Freshman!

One could think of it as they do in baseball. Dustin Pedroia was drafted in I think 2004. And he's in the running for rookie of the year (and it's 2007!!).

And baseball doesn't count the "cup of coffee seasons" either. Does football? Is Baugher eligible for ROY votes? (Granted, he'd have to pin every single punt on the 1-yard line and score a couple of TDs on fakes for good measure. But theoretically.)

Last I heard, nickel backs were listed as cornerbacks. The only exception, and it was that, is when we played the BIG NICKEL and used three safeties when we played five defensive backs. Meriweather is a nickel.
