Let's say the Football Gods say, "You can pick one of the following to see in the next few years. The other one will not happen."

* The Pats set an NFL record for fewest points allowed (stingiest D).
* The Pats set an NFL record for most points scored (most prolific O).

Which would you pick?

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

I prefer defense--far and away.

Bloodthirsty, pain inflicting, confusion generating, demoralizing, dominating, DEFENSE.

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

It all starts with D, IMHO. If you can stop the other team from scoring you don't need to score as much. Plus, solid defense forces other teams to punt from further back and creates better field position for the offense.

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

Offense wins games, defense wins championships.

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

I would normally go D here, but feel we already have that nasty 'tude defense. What I want at this point in time is a scorching offense to solidify Brady as the best QB ever and to smash Pay-a-tons ego to bits.

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

My prediction - D will win this poll in a walk - which says a lot seeing as we idolize Brady

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

best offence ever....cause i am sure the defence will be good.

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

We'll already have a Championship D so I went with most prolific offense b/c that would be fun to watch.

Thats what Im talking about!! Wouldn't it be nice to win by say, 14 or more points on a regular basis for a change??

Brady deserves these new WRs. Lets hope they perform together as expected.

I think you guys are glossing over the premise:

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

Postseason averages for Pats:

TOTAL POINTS
2001-20.0
2003-24.1
2004-28.3
2005-20.5
2006-31.7

TOTAL POINTS ALLOWED
2001-15.7
2003-19.0
2004-17.0
2005-15.0
2006-25.0

Only twice did we have an offense that could be described as "prolific" and we only won the SB once in those 2 years.

Four times have we had a stingy D in the playoffs, and 3 times we took home the Lombardi. The one time we had a less-than-stellar D, no Lombardi.

I'll take a stingy D, please.

"Will not happen" means that the other side won't set a record, not that they'll outright stink. :)

Still doesnt change the equation. The other will not happen meaning that the defense may be adequate (or better) to keep the opponent from keeping up with a high octane offense. Im still into the novelty that would be a Indy-style offense.

Having that offense may also bring some new bennies, like a bigtime stud RB and TE wanting to play here for less in the next year or so.

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS

and it's so much fun to see the opponent shake their heads when they can't do anything offensively.

Picture, "cut that meat" throwing his offense under the bus again.......

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

Defense.

A top-notch defense will score some points to supplement the offense, whereas a top-notch offense normally means quick scoring drives and more time on the field for the defense, which then has a greater likelihood of tiring and giving up more points.

Defense!!!

Exactly. With the defense we already have, a high powered offense means 19-0. I don't understand how anyone can vote otherwise.

Why are we glossing over it? We're saying we won't have the best D of all time, bu we will have the best O of all time. To me, that doesn't mean our defense will be in the dumps. Not at all. As I look a this team, I'm much more confident that the D will perform well, even given the offense's weapons.

Will Maroney pan out? Will brady find his groove with the new wideouts? Will the loss of Daniel Graham be a major problem?

On defense, there are fewer questions, and they mainly have to do with Asante and also how fast Adalius can adjust.

Re: If you could only choose one . . .

Bill Belichick is not,has not nor will he ever be a Don Coryell clone - BB is a balanced offensive mind so the high scoring high passing teams will never be in New England as long as BB is in charge,he will use run pass about equal as he almost always does and of course it matters into which game situation we are in - Ahead or behind and by how much.

Even with these receivers we have a high powered explosive high scoring offense is not going to happen any time soon.

Your defense answer is more likely of the two.

If they had the stingiest Defense ever or the best offense ever it really wouldn't matter too much about the other side of the ball being average. If the defense is better than the '85 Bears, then the offense doesn't need to be anything more than average. The same goes for the offense. If it's the best ever, the other side of the ball doesn't need to light the world on fire. It comes more down to what legacy you'd want for the team.
