Backup QB position extremely weak on PATS

Now with Cassell injured they bring in 43 yo Testaverde.

If Brady gets hurt, it seems they could do better with a more experienced but not completely past his prime backup. Kelly Holcomb for example.

Look at some of the better backups in the NFL:
Brad Smith, Marques Tsuiasospo, Patric Ramsay, Damon Huard, Charlie Batch, Kerry Collins, Tim Rattay, David Garrard, David Carr, Brian Griese, Seneca Wallace

It seems that this is a real weak area for the Patriots and in this era, the likelihood of needing a strong backup quarterback at some point during teh season is high.

That has NOTHING to do with it. It has everything to do with the fact that you're seeing a pre-season game, in which the QBs (Cassel especially) are playing with a patchwork group of CRAP that are going to be cut any day.

Add to that the fact that they were playing with an OL who is learning a new blocking scheme.

Add to that the fact that NO TEAM has a great situation if their F-ing startting QB is out for the year.

Add to that the fact that newbie chicken littles like you always to manage to pollute this board with simpleton, clueless, breathless shrieks like this - AFTER WEEK TWO OF PRE-SEASON - and it's worthy of derision.

Now, with your response, heaps MORE of derision are duly headed your way. NO ONE here who is any kind of veteran of the board is beyond holding Belichick/Pioli responsible for gaffes they've made - Hell, I just started a thread TODAY about the misfire on Garrett Mills. WOW. Talk about not knowing whats going on.

1) Cassel doesn't lack mobility.
2) We don't know (and may never know) the extent of Cassel's injury.
3) Of the guys you mentioned, Huard is a starter. Brad Smith is a WR. Tuiasisopo is so good that the Raiders let him go and decided that Andrew Walter was better. Tim Rattay is a 3rd QB for the Titans. Batch isn't great at all.

Back-up QB has never been a weak area for the Pats except when they had Davey there.

I wouldn't call his numbers great by any stretch of the imagination. Have you actually looked at why his numbers are so high?

Though he played in 8 games last season, 4 of them he only threw 0-2 passes. And completed them.. That helped raise his QB rating.

Batch played in all of 1 game where he threw more than 20 passes. That was the 1st game of the season. He was 15 for 25 for 209 yards.

Here we go . . .

Repeat after me, the Pats have a solid backup QB situation. While no team can afford to carry two Pro Bowlers, the Pats have Cassel, a capable and improving young QB and Testaverde, a proven vet to hold down the fort.

A little history may be necessary to illustrate. When the Colts lost Unitas to injury in Super Bowl V, they had Earl Morrall waiting in the wings, and he led them to victory over Dallas. He played in one other Super Bowl (Super Bowl III) after leading the Colts to a 13-1 regular season record after Unitas was injured in an exhibition game. He played backup to Bob Griese during the Dolphins undefeated season and saw regular duty up to the AFC Championship while Griese was out with an injury.

Earl Morrall was the consumate backup QB who knew the system and the playbook, and there's no reason why Cassel can't assume that role should it be necessary. He's playing for a solid team with strengths in all facets of the offense, similar to the Baltimore Colts of Morrall's day. With Testaverde as the 3rd QB, I'd say the team has a pretty secure situation with two backup QBs who know the system and playbook very well.

Take a deep breath and exhale. There are probably other things that are greater issues, but this team is pretty solid in most areas and very solid at QB.
