Pats moves
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots confirmed the release of veteran punter Josh Miller today. The team also announced that it has claimed offensive lineman Chris Patrick off waivers from the Giants, and that it has released offensive lineman Brian Barthelmes.

Some information on Patrick, who played at the University of Nebraska and was eligible for this year's supplemental draft:

Patrick, 22, was signed by the New York Giants as an undrafted rookie free agent on July 18, 2007. The 6-foot-4-inch, 280-pound offensive lineman played in the Giants’ preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 11, 2007. He was waived by New York yesterday. The Ithaca, Mich. native played in 18 games with 14 starts for Nebraska over three seasons from 2004-06. Patrick has position flexibility to play guard and tackle, and is a longer shot to earn a roster spot.

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Barthelmes was one of the Patriots allocations to NFL Europa this spring. He was a member of the Patriots' practice squad for 12 weeks during the 2006 regular season and playoffs. Barthelmes can play center and guard.

Re: Pats cut Barthelmes, claim OT Chris Patrick

I think BOX will be liking this. If I remember correctly, BOX thought this kid might have been picked by the Pats late in the supplemental draft.

Barthelmes can play center and guard...

But not very well.

From the Herald:
"I’m kind of a sleeper guy, and New England’s kind of known for getting sleepers and late-round draft picks and having them do well and getting some success,” Patrick told the Lincoln Journal-Star before the draft. “Maybe they see something in me they like. I’d love to go there.”

But not very well.

Or the Pats have a GLUT of them. You know, Koppen, Hochstein, Yates, Elgin. Do they really need a 5th center?

Watching Elgin against Tampa Bay it was evident Barthelmes would be gone, I loved watching him in NFLE, but Elgin is a much better player.

Patrick is an interesting pick-up at this point, it feels more like an extended tryout after he was cut by the Giants (who I'm watching against Carolina as I type, Patrick must have been pretty shaky for them because they aren't impressing me). The key question for Patrick, how quick/mobile is he? Oldenburg left a good impression at G and T in game one, can this kid beat him out for the Practice Squad?

Honestly? I think that the Pats would keep all 3 OTs on the practice squad. Just because we've used 4 there every season because of injuries.

I am excited about the Patrick signing but that has a lot to do with me being a Huskers fan. We now have 2 Huskers on the roster between him and LeKevin, hopefully they can both earn spots.

It's interesting how somehow a 7th can show a lot...so quick...I like Patrick...he's one who might develop in time. More work for Dante.

Could somebody tell me if other teams remain so active in FA pick ups as the Pats are at this point in the season.

Dante has just welcomed Patrick into his Academy. I was excited about the possibility of getting this guy in the supplemental and then maybe as an ADFA. He is a project for sure. I also cannot wait to see the first round of cuts and any veterans that may get the boot from other teams that may interest the Pats (ie. CB depth or ILB depth). Does anyone know if the Pats ever claimed anyone that late after roster cuts that played a significant role on the Pats team recently?

I wouldn't call him a FA pick up.

Yes, plenty of teams are swapping out players for street free agents at this point.

If I understood your question correctly then the following active Patriots were picked up after being cut by another team during pre-season or the regular season

Russ Hochstein
Wesley Britt
Heath Evans
Artrell Hawkins
Jabbar Gaffney

The first two were signed to the practice squad after cut-downs. The final three were signed well into the regular season, although Gaffney was cut at the cutdown date by the Eagles. Hawkins by the Redskins too.

Wow - you are good
That was quick - it had to be off the top of your head

I knew that info (so I know you are right) but I had to look it up

The Schwab of Pats knowledge - I bow before you

Actually three, him, LeKevin and Hochstein...

Just my $0.02 (and 1000th post)

Don't bow, he's got a low sense of humor and isn't above a goose.

Are you sure about Hochstein?? I have him joining the PSquad in 02 before the Denver Game 7...not before. I know Britt was a PSquad pickup at the start of the year.
In 02 the 5 starters on the PSquad were TE Love, DT Anderson, DT Saylor, LB Moore, and CB BWilliams. Before game 1, Saylor was gone and OT Gorin was signed. Just to be accurate. There were bunches of comings and goings in those weeks, including WRs TTaylor and McCready, OL Knudson & Whiting.

Yeah, that's right. Forget exactly when it was.

Hey you did that quick from memory...I sort of remembered it was later BUT...had to use my cheat sheets to find it. And whoever remembers any of those PSquaders?? McCreedy was still in the NFLE and Anderson was in the AFL...Moore was the big winner with a nice contract in SF...
