I'm starting to think that Thomas will be PUPed giving Mills a shot to impress early in the season. I didn't think this coming in but from the various reports Thomas seems like the one PUPpy who isn't seen working out hard on other fields.

Ah, I didn't see you have Mills listed as a FB. Regardless, I expect Thomas to be PUPed to start the season.

As you noticed, Mills was a late addition, as the 54th roster spot. I will edit and make Mills a TE. After all, in his senior year, he caught for more yards than any TE in the NCAA. I suspect that he is as good as most team's #3 TE.

Only 2 or3 minor tweaks really.

1. I don't think we carry 11 db's. I can see 2 out of Andrews,Wesley and Mitchell making it. But, not all three. I'm assuming Samuel reports by opening day. I think that roster spot will be filled by either a 6th wr or 4th te.
I think we'll carry 6 wr's. I'd put K. Washington as my 6th wr. Just a hunch. But, I think we trade one of our wr's. Reche Caldwell for a 4th or 5th rounder. I think Gaffney has passed him. Then that spot is taken by Troy Brown until Chad Jackson comes off PUP. Mills could take that spot. But, if 3 te's are healthy. I think he's odd man out.

2. I think we go younger instead of Chad Brown. Either C.Mays or
O.Lua. With P. Woods having a good camp and A.Thomas able to slide outside. I'm more worried about ilb/special teams. That's why I'd go with Mays or Lua. My guess Mays.

I think that Yates injury is a really serious injury and he could wind up on the IR. If it is not a serious injury, then he is the luckiest guy n the world.

Also I can not see Lua making our team or any other team. He is wooden indian slow. It's painful how slow this guy is.

Finally I really like Meriweather at CB as opposed to FS/SS. He looks like he can cover slot recveivers pretty consistently. Plus he's such a physical presence that he can help in the running game if we get him closer to the ball.

Good show. It seems like no matter who the final cuts are or who the final keepers are the roster is very solid. I will post my updated list after the pre-season game.

My comments:
- I don't think Vinnie T is on the opening day roster, opening a spot for a bubble player (Hawkins) (Mays) (Washington)
- we could see someone like Marcellus Rivers or an un-named JAG TE make the roster if Brady is banged up and Thomas isn't ready to go
- if Yates is hurt Elgin may be playing his way onto the team

Here's mine. I love these, but it helps when someone else does most of the leg work. ;)

AUGUST 9 MGTEICH’s 53 MAN ROSTER

OFFENSE 23
QB - 2 Brady, Cassell. (Vinny comes in after 2 a days, stays 3 weeks till the last cut, then waits by the phone)
RB - 4 Maroney, Morris, Faulk, Evans
C - 2 Koppen, Hochstein
G - 2 Neal, Mankins (I think Yates is IRed, if so then we only carry 8 OLmen, but the PS littered with OLman also Hock, Kazcur and Britt can play G)
OT - 4 Light, Kazcur, O'Callaghan, Britt
WR - 6 Moss, Stallworth, Welker, Caldwell, Gaffney, Washington/Childress
TE - 3 Watson, Brady, Mills

We only have 23, but the PS will be heavily load on the offensive side, especially OLmen

DEFENSE 27
DE - 4 Seymour, Warren, Green, Smith
DT - 3 Wilfork, Wright, Brown
LB - 9 Vrabel, Colvin, Thomas, Bruschi, Seau, Brown/Mays, Alexander, Woods, Izzo
DBs - 11 Samuel, Hobbs, Gay, James, Merriweather Wesley/Mitchell, Sanders, Wilson, Harrison, Andrews, Hawkins

SPECIALISTS (3)
P - 1 Miller
K - 1 Gostkowski
LS - 1 Paxton

PUP (3)
Jackson
Brown
Thomas

I've weighted the number heavily to the defensive side of the ball, because I think we can hide the real depth on the PS where the numbers are thin, especially on the OL- Most teams carry 9. Slashes means either or.

Re: 53-man roster after first preseason game

1) I presume you would put Yates on IR.
2) Would you have Mills should make the Practice Squad, replacing Childress who I don't think has eligibility?
3) I think it a bit early to give Rogers Brown's backup OLB roster spot.
4) I think it a bit early to give Williams a roster spot. Wesley seems more likely.
5) If Samuel doesn't show up, you get an extra roster spot. I expect that it may be a free agent running back on the last day.

That seems like a lot of LBs and safeties.
But it's wise given the amount of injuries we get there and the way the 3-4 uses linebackers.
I gotta feeling we're going to have 3 qbs, though.
Add testiverdi subtract...i dunno how about... Mitchell.

Re: 53-man roster after first preseason game

I suggest subtracting Samuel.
I agree about adding Vinny.

OK. I forgot about him.
Who needs him.

Re: 53-man roster after first preseason game

He's easy enough to forget.
We add the follwing to our secondary:
Harrison,Wilson,Meriweather,Mitchell,Gay,James, and Wesley/Richardson

OK. I forgot about him.

1) I presume you would put Yates on IR.
1) Yes, Yate to IR.

2) Would you have Mills should make the Practice Squad, replacing Childress who I don't think has eligibility?
2) Mills to the PS with Bam (I believe they changed the PS rules so you can stay on the PS for 3 years now, I could be wrong).

3) I think it a bit early to give Rogers Brown's backup OLB roster spot.
3) It is my first ammendment right to have a knee-jerk opinion...I don't like Brown's chances, Mays, Lua and Rogers can all play special teams putting them ahead of the vet. Plus the Brown/Beisel days are hard to forget.

4) I think it a bit early to give Williams a roster spot. Wesley seems more likely.
4) Wesley, Hawkins, Mitchell, Williams, Richardson are all fighting for final couple DB spots. I am not sold on Wesley, if he had any talent at all the Bears wouldn't have let him go this early in camp.

5) If Samuel doesn't show up, you get an extra roster spot. I expect that it may be a free agent running back on the last day.
5) That makes sense, Morris didn't blow me away. He looks like a Patrick Pass clone to me. Especially if the FA RB can play special teams this makes a lot of sense.

Ammendment - Either Hilliard or Oldenburg are cut loose and LeKevin Smith takes their spot on the PS.

Re: 53-man roster after first preseason game

I am yet sold on Wesley either. The Bears let him loose because he is a bad fit in their cover two. He has been the dime back for two top teams. Thats pretty good for a street free agent. But sure, he could be beat out for a spot.

I am sold on Mitchell. He may be our top STer. AND, he could start at safety if necessary. He is a striaght up replacment for Hawkins.

I'd also like someone to beat out Chad Brown. Rogers could be the man. However, we are not looking for another special teamer. This position is for a player who can take significant reps with an injury or two, or it is for a pure developmental player. I would expect this player to be inactive each game.

just a thought......

you'll never be able to stash Mills on the PS,
he could be signed by another team at any time.

All they would have to do is add them to their 53 man roster.

I don't think you could hide Richardson either.....CB's are at a premium, these days

You could pay Mills a big salary to remain on the PS,but that's risky, also.

I think other teams are perusing the Patriot's final cuts, like salivating hound dogs.......

They're just waiting for a gem to fall.IMO

I think Richardson is different. He was not highly rated coming out of school (like Mills was). In fact, he was not on a lot of peoples boards. I would be easy to store him on the PS because most teams would just think he was on the team because he played with Weiss. Unless he is just amazing in preseason game he could very well end up on the PS this year.

Yeah, Mangini is salivating over the Pats final cuts.
