6x Pro Bowler Bucs FB Mike Alstott to retire today

IMO Probably the very best fullback I have seen in the past 10 years. Definitely was the epitome of smash mouth football and was a monster in the SB championship year of 2002 for the Bucs. IMO he was just as good and even had better years than another bruiser of this decade in Jerome Bettis.

Alstott, the 6 time pro bowler in his 10 years in the league must be considered top 10 fullbacks of all time, probably ranks lower down the list of the all time top 10.

I am glad he is retiring before he had a chance to put a lick on one of our defensive guys in tomorrow nights game.

Alstott used to hit so hard I thought he would have made a decent Linebacker or Safety,After all he did play with one of the best safeties also in the decade in Lynch who would have been a good teacher or the LB Nickerson who was also very good IMO.

Are we talking about the same Alstott? I'm in Tampa and my observation is that Alstott was a big running back, hardly a smash mouth fullback like Gash to my recollection.

I wish him the best in his retirement, but his ProBowl status derived from name recognition due to the fact he ran the ball and other "fullbacks" didn't.

Hate to be sour on his retirement day, but i believe this to be the truth. Am I wrong?

They are crazy. Alstott was never a fullback as he wasn't a good blocker and he would have been below average back in the day when FBs got plenty of carries.

I agree wholehearted with RayClay on this one. Alstott was a decent power RB but because he was really the only rushing "FB" (as in FB sized) out there, people thought that he was better than he was. And to say that Alstott was even close to Bettis is *way* off base IMHO.

I believe you, but ESPN seems to know less and less about sports all the time. There are tons of guys throughout time that could have done what Alstott did.

Off the top of my head, I'd put Czonka, Jim Brown, Bettis, Campbell, Ricky Williams, John Riggins and our own corey Dillon ahead of him.

I'd put Cookie Gilchrist and Jim Nance ahead too, but they didn't have longevity.

Contrary to what the media has reported that there was supposed to be a news conference today at 2pm to officially announce Alstott's retirement was found out just now to be premature (nothing new there )

Alstott has not decided to officially retire and had instead been placed on IR for the Bucs this season...probably will see how his rehab goes before next season,then likely retire if he is not in a football mind or in condition to play anymore at that time.

I guess ESPN'S list is not directly on power Running backs but includes Fullbacks,Halfbacks too and its 'backs' in general,not a certain position.

IMO Alstott was slightly overrated, but early in his career was a very good receiver out of the backfield. I thought for sure he was going to evolve into a Tom Rathman-type of player.

In the end, he was a good power RB and a fringe pick as the top 10 of all-time. He was a below-average blocker as Tampa imported Lorenzo Neal in their NFCCG season in 1998 to put more physicallity in their running game.

Jim taylor of Green Bay was one I was thinking of. Of course Marion Motley was the best before Jim Brown and Earl Campbell.

And of course there's Bronco Nagurski LOL!!!
