Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

I don't understand why the need to buy or sell Mills at this point.

Yes, the whole buy or sell thing sounds a little too much like espn.

So we're clear, the "He was King of the Castle at Tulsa" part of the post is also ridiculous. A rough moment for an ordinarily very fine poster. I'll chalk it up to a brain-freeze and move on, giving you a pass.

Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

He was clearly attempting to be funny. Lots of players have made similar jokes.

If he had played with Joe Kapp, that comment would have been really funny.

Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

Plus he said something in an interview that made me question whether he "gets it". This is not logical, but no where in the forum rules does it state opinions have to be logical. Last year he was asked what it was like to catch passes from Tom Brady, he responded very unenthusiastically and stated "he throws an ok spiral." What the helll is that? He should be kissing the ground that #12 walks on, instead of being a condencending little jerk. Anyway that is my rant, thank you for listening.
Without insulting you, I agree with Patsox23 that no offensive player who hopes to make the team would ever disparage this QB to the press. Not even to a teammate unless drunk and out of earshot of anyone else.

So maybe, just maybe he was being sarcastic. You think? :)

Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

This is a case of passed chances. Last year he had the chance to cement his presence in the rooster with no pass catchers. This year he might not even make it.

This is strange...you see that Mills having a wide-open roster opportunity last season, blowing it and failing to "cement his presence," and now facing an uphill battle for a much tighter roster spot. I see precisely the opposite!

Last year the team may have been thin on wide receivers but it was stacked at TE/HB with Graham, Watson, Thomas. Remember all the groans when we drafted Mills who was "obviously not a need"? But he opened some eyes by looking great in camp, then got hurt and ended up on IR.

Now this season we're looking at an injured Thomas who hasn't even made it to the sidelines for walkthroughs. Assuming he ends up on PUP, the #3 TE spot may be the single easiest position on the team to win. Mills has been hurt himself and seemed to hit the ground a bit rusty, but it sounds like he's getting his legs under him quickly. Plus don't forget he was an absolute ace on ST coverage units in college.

Where are the "passed chances"? And for those who would cut Mills, who's your third TE until Thomas is back?

Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

We still love ctstjohn, sorry if I was too harsh. But just in case, would you consider selling me your house for 5 dollars?

Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

Quite possibly the most idiotic thing you've ever posted. Stupendously off-the-mark. Especially that last part. So incredibly ridiculous that I think you must be being sarcastic and I'M missing the point. If you actually think he was serious about Brady and his "ok spiral," I would like to enter into negotiations to buy your house for five dollars. It's a good deal. Trust me.

If you think that is the most idiotic thing I have posted then you haven't been paying attention. I am sure I have posted dumber things than that...

Anyway I said it wasn't logical and I know I am not the brighest bulb but I was totally unimpressed with his response. He sounded like he was entitled and it was the reporters pleasure to talk to him becasue he was the high and mighty 106th overall pick. IT came off to me as a remark that a stupid young football player would make, contrary to popular opinion most of these guys are not doing MENSA brain teasers at half time.

In any case I am sure that BB won't be factoring interviews with reporters into his evaluation criteria.

And I won't take less than $4.50 for my house.

Agreed.

Asante Samuel was King of the Castle at the University of Central Florida.

CTST, just up front - sorry I was overly harsh. Don't mind me, and thanks for handling it with decency and good humor. I should take a page from your book.

I still think the excerpt above is off-the-mark. I think there is literally NO WAY Mills was being anything but completely tongue-in-cheek. And I say 5 dollars IS more than $4.50 so I think, your house-wise, we have a deal. I'll be moving in on Friday as long as you have NFL Network and don't mind taking my studio apartment in Los Angeles in exchange. Feel free to use the last month on the parking placards.

Or with Billy Kilmer.

As for Mills, if he can permanently be cured of the dropsies, then he can save a roster spot by being the 5th RB (though I still wouldn't mind having another experienced RB, but I think that BB is going to hold his cards and see if Morris can effectively spell Maroney) and 3rd TE, while David Thomas recuperates on the PUP.

Can Mills catch consistently?
Can Mills block effectively?
Can Morris run adequately?

Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

BB usually has a full assessment of a draftee with potential at 3 years. That being said, given the injury to Thomas and the lack of depth at TE, Mills could be valuable this season for TE/H-back and STs. His play in preseason will be more meaningful this season, but if he shows he's on the mark in STs, he'll be here this season. The good thing about this team is that they are patient (sometimes to a fault, Bethel Johnson) when it comes to developing their roster.

All valid questions, I would add a 4th if he has any shot to make the team.
1) Can Mills catch consistently? - This should be his strength, he had over 200 receptions in college
2) Can Mills block effectively? - big question mark, one missed block can lead to Brady getting killed
3) Can Morris run adequately? - even bigger question, he hasn't had a handoff in the pros or in college or high school, not a great track record to draw from

4) Can he play special teams? Maybe, this is from NFLDraftScout "proved to be a very capable gunner on special teams, registering 26 tackles (14 solos) with an assisted sack for minus-3 yards"

Mills excels at S/Ts.

Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

"Oft-injured"? He was injured his rookie year and stashed in IR. BB has done this many times.

He will be used on ST and in creative ways on offense. He can be used in 4 and 5 WR sets and may be groomed to replace Faulk as a 3rd Down RB. He reportedly has incredible hands.

What type of 3rd down back? Mills has no chance to be a 3rd down back like a Kevin Faulk/Dave Megget type whatsoever. He doesnt have the elusiveness or the speed. Hes more like a Kevin Turner type. That I'll buy.

Is that what you meant?

Mills was very quick in the one PS game he saw last year. Surprisingly quick. There is no way you would make that comment if you actually saw him play.

Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

I think he gets cut, he is clearly on the bubble and is fighting for one of the final 2-3 roster spots. He apparently played some special teams in college which could help him. It was a strange pick at the time, lots of players were available at positions of need.
link 2006 round 4 --> http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/years/2006#round4

I look at him and see someone who was Mr. Everything and King of the Castle at some no name hick college (Tulsa). In the pros he is just another an undersized TE with no experience running the ball. These 'tweeners' look cute on paper but I would rather have someone who is good at one position than one who is Ok at four.

Plus he said something in an interview that made me question whether he "gets it". This is not logical, but no where in the forum rules does it state opinions have to be logical. Tulsa is a Division 1 school. Did you know that? Hmm.. Doesn't seem like it. OH, and Mills did more than "just play some special teams" in college. He was a friggin ALL-AMERICAN his senior year. That just doesn't happen to a kid from "some no name HICK COLLEGE."

Since when do TEs run the ball? Since when does an H-back run the ball? They don't. And Mills isn't being expected to run the ball yet. He's expected to be a blocking FB who can all run damn good routes.

As for what you'd prefer, its matters not. What matters is what BB prefers. And what BB prefers are guys who show versatility and contribute on special teams.

As for this supposed interview you heard, was it live? Was it over the radio? Did you stop to think that maybe he was NOT being condescending but downplaying the hype? Which would you rather have? A starstruck dumb kid who can't focus on running patterns or a kid who doesn't care if who is throwing him the ball as long as he is doing his job. That is what your description comes across as.

This idea of yours that receivers should be kissing the ground that Brady walks on is just stupid. This team is looking for players. Not arse kissers.

Re: Mills....I'm not buying...However.......

I don't understand why the need to buy or sell Mills at this point. There's a month to go before final cutdowns, for now, eat, drink, and practice your beatification acceptance speech. ;)

Wow, BOX...little harsh?

I posted this thread to gain insight on Garrett Mills and get out of the way.

Don't see how this was an attempt to attain Sainthood, as you so delicately put it.

I've seen most of the Pat's training camp sessions and my eyes tell me that a significant change is in the works.

This may affect both Garrett Mills and the standard two TE sets.

Perhaps, others in attendance see differently...I'll leave the "beatification" to Pats1 and Mrs B.

Mills is actually quite elusive. His 20 yard shuttle is a 4.06 and his 3 cone was a 6.82. That is better than most of the RBs that came out this year and amongst the best for the WRs that came out also. In fact, only Garrett Wolfe and Ahmad Bradshaw for RBs posted better numbers this year. And for wide receivers, of the people who actually ran, only Anthony Gonzalez posted equal or better numbers than Mills.

Mills has very fluid hips and a good vertical as well. I think he does have what it takes to be a 3rd down option in passing situations as a replacement for Faulk.
