I guess were just gonna let him compete and have some bodies for the preseason. I mean were thin at CB if Asante doesn't show and we can't afford another injury at CB

-Samuel gone
-Hobbs/Gay probably wont play too much in preseason
-Scott out
-James has done well
-Andrews
-Gemara (will be cut sometime soon)
-Anam
-Richardson

I guess we could use another CB for preseason to avoid injuring our starters/James who will be the nickel unless Cash shows up.

If there's one guy who isn't thrilled about this I'd bet it's Mel Mitchell.

Dante Wesley was Carolina's dime back from '03-'05. The Bears signed him to a two year deal during the '06 offseason. He did not fit into the teams cover 2 scheme.

What little I can find on him indicates that he's a special teams demon.

This deal makes plenty of sense. The team needs to replace Chad Scott on the depth chart, and perhaps Richardson isn't cutting it.

Could also mean Asante will play hardball and hold out into the season, but I am still skeptical that will happen.

Not exactly Champ Bailey but if he helps with depth then all the better. I don't even know him but I would rather see him at corner than Hawkins. The Hawk looked so slow last year if he had to play on the edge we would have to change his name to Earthwind Moreland or Duane Starks.

Maybe they saw Gay almost get injured and realized that his track record of staying on the field is not good.

Maybe he makes the roster and Richardson moves to the practice squad creating a little more depth.

I wonder if he will play this weekend.

What are the chances of Anam sticking to the roster or practice squad? Haven't heard a ton about his performance in TC.

The PFW crew said he isn't that good. I don't remember if they said he's flat out lousy or just nothing special.

Not good for the practice squad. There's no way in hell he makes the 53-man.

Everything I've seen and read is that he's been overmatched at CB and SS, and lost on STs.

He's even made Patriots.com's "Who's Not [Hot]" list a few times.

Dante Wesley has pretty much been a tag-a-long to Ricky Manning.

Wesley was the Panthers' dimeback from 2002-05. Manning was the Panthers' nickelback from 2003-05.

Both went to the Bears in 2006 and played the same roles. Both played in Super Bowl XXXVIII (against the Pats) and Super Bowl XLI (against the Colts).

or Duane Starks.

I thought that name here was like Moses in the movie The Ten Commandments. "Let the name of Duane Starks be stricken from every book and tablet" :p

According to Reiss...he's on the field...already #38....

How do you figure that its Richardson not cutting it? Richardson, from reports, has been a typical rookie. Having his bright spots (staying with Moss on several occasions) and his bad spots.

Chad Scott wasn't exactly a special teams terror by any stretch of the imagination. They could be brining in Wesley for any number of reasons, but the fact that he's been a special teamer/nickel/dime back would lead me to believe that the Pats want someone with some experience who could also potentially be a safety. And it could mean that Artrell Hawkins might not be cutting it.

This seems to be another one of those desperation moves that the USA Today writer was talking about. This move reeks of the Pats desperately trying to keep up with the Colts. The Colts lose Tarik Glenn (which by a lot of media opinions seem to have made the Colts actually better) and Booger McFarland (who all the sudden was a liability last year). The Pats are clearly countering the Colts' obvious addition by substration with a desperation reach for a marque back up CB and special teams player who virtually no one other than Panthers or Bears fans have ever heard of.

I am ashamed to be a Pats fan today after this shameless and fruitless attempt by Belichick and Pioli to mortgage the Pats' future to keep up with the ever improving Colts.

Why Mitchell? Why not Hawkins, who had clearly lost more than a step last season?

IF Wesley makes the team as Chad Scott's replacement, then it means he's shown enough to potentially cover the TE or slot receiver. If that is the case, then the Patriots should be better off than they were in the AFCC game where they had to rely on Eric Alexander to try and do that.

Special team demon? Hardly:

From what some Bear fans are saying. "We brought him in as an ST player...and he sucked at it!"

Bears fan here checking in on the trade. Don't look for much out of Wesley. Physical guy that blew way too many coverages. Lots of mental mistakes. Good special teamer. If he ends up starting then the Pats are in trouble. Don't get too excited, no one on the Bear's forum is upset. BTW, sorry about the Super Bowl Masacre in 1985. Tell Tony Eason he can come out from under the bed now.

You know what they say, one man's trash is another man's...ahhh nevermind.

No one is expecting him to start or anything. Maybe compete for the fourth or fifth CB spot. Let's just hope that it works out as well as the last trade the Patriots made with the Bears. Thanks for that one, by the way.

As for the Superbowl, the better team won...by a lot. It was unfortunate for us Pats fans but to quote Belichick, it is what it is. The Pats more than redeemede themselves.

Yes, he sucked so bad that he had 13 special teams tackles in 13 games...Granted he wasn't Brendan Ayanbandejo who had 20, but he wasn't a slouch either, stats wise. From what I can fiend, Wesley was the Bears 2nd best special teams tackler.

Thanks for the feedback, but I don't think anyone is expecting him to start. At this point, I don't even expect him to play anywhere other than special teams. If he does, great. If not, oh well.

As for the Super Bowl in 1985, hopefully we can get our revenge in February of 2008.

Read his bio, he excels at being up on the line in coverage in which he excels. That isn't the point of the Tampa 2 defense. If anyhting he will be depth as a nickel back - he's got great size - probably could play safety eventually (if they did it with Wislon, anything is possible). More depth on ST. I agree with other posters, maybe Hawkins has lost a step - it showed during the AFCCG.
