Less than a week into camp, but we’ve had an ample supply of those first-hand camp reports and impressions
that we’ve been hungering for all these arid months.
Thought i’d try my hand at collating what i recall that
the credentialed bloggers and our own SeanBruschi, Mrs.B,
Pats1, and Pats726 have been saying about various guys.

It’s not what i think of these players. It’s my impression of what observers at camp have said
usually multiple reports and by different posters.
Most players have gone largely unmentioned in those reports.

This thread can be improved by those who go to camp either corroborating or correcting
the players’ performance ratings... or by anyone who thinks i’ve (unwittingly) distorted the consensus
of what we’ve all been reading here – avidly and appreciatively. Here goes:

A ... consistently outstanding
Moss
Hobbs
Welker
Gaffney
Woods
Andrews
Adalius

B ... drawing favorable notice
Evans
Lua
Morris
Gutierrez
Izzo
Warren
Baugher
Wilfork
Washington
Mankins

C ... about as-expected or as-before
Tom Brady
Bruschi
Wright
O’Callaghan
Moore
Faulk
Miller
Green

D ... more bad press than good
Caldwell
Malone
Light
Kareem
Cassel
Anam

F ... worst on the field
Kranchick
James
Williams

I'd like to know where you get that LIGHT has been bad... Caldwell hasn't lit it up, but there has been more good than bad as well...

Light was one of the several i agonized briefly over.
Two separate times Matt has been cited for a lap.
The second time he dogged it.
Must be doing something unsatisfactory out there.

Of course, this reading so far
doesn't imperil his roster spot in the slightest!
There's nothing he could do to get cut.

Agreed. Since it's been reported that Caldwell has been dropping easy passes, shouldn't he be ranked "C ... about as-expected or as-before"?

They can get a lap for a false start. Not a big deal . . . neither is not running it hard.

F ... worst on the field
Kranchick
James
Williams[/COLOR]
My reading has found Tory James to get mixed reviews, some good, some bad . . . certainly not "worst on the field" as a consensus.

Ouch. It's hard to tell how each player is doing in TC unless all the reports are either overwhelmingly good or bad. Reche could have dropped a couple in 1 session and caught everything else otherwise. Read some props for Woods pass rushing today, then saw 1 report it was against Kranchick who probably won't make the team. Would he do that against Dan Grah,,, oh sorry. No longer a Patriot. Against Ben Watson or Kyle Brady? Who knows. It's not like we get to read the coaches notes on players after each TC session. I can't wait to see a preseason game just to see if reports match what I see for myself.

I realize this is tongue-in-cheek, but it represents a ridiculous and baseless myth re Caldwell's performance in 2006. He was, without hesitation and without a shadow of a doubt, our most valuable receiver last year. He dropped two passes in the Indy game - that we lost LARGELY because of our D - neither of which affected the outcome of the game.

The first drop was followed by Gaffney's TD at the back of the EZ. The second one came after Brady screwed up and didn't see him, and would not have led to a 1st down. And a few plays later, it would've been moot except the refs swallowed their flag in the face of an OBVIOUS PI by the Colts.

I am so tired of this nonsense revisionist history about Reche. The guy gets absolutely KILLED on this board on a daily basis. And I'm not even someone who expects him to make the team this year. I'd just like to see a bit more accuracy and fairness on the board. Sorry if I've stated this too strongly, but it keeps happening, over and over and over, and it's truly become annoying, not to mention deeply unfair to bug-eyes.

A ... consistently outstanding
Moss
Hobbs
Welker
Gaffney
Woods
Andrews -- I'd rate both in the B-C area.

Adalius

B ... drawing favorable notice
Evans -- I'd move Heath up.
Lua
Morris -- I'd move Sammy down, I'm reading mixed reviews.
Gutierrez
Izzo
Warren
Baugher
Wilfork
Washington
Mankins

C ... about as-expected or as-before
Tom Brady
Bruschi
Wright
O’Callaghan
Moore
Faulk -- Consistently making big plays may be what we expect, but he grades out an A for quality.
Miller
Green

D ... more bad press than good
Caldwell -- Cold, most of the negative comes from the reports of others who are shining brightly, I'd move him up a grade.
Malone
Light
Kareem
Cassel
Anam

F ... worst on the field -- Perhaps not meeting expectations would be better, I could easily see two as Ds and James a C - our expectations may be skewed...
Kranchick
James
Williams
My quick reaction to your thoughts. :singing:

Just saying, last we left him it's par for the course.

Barring massive WR injuries, highly doubt he makes the roster. In fact, it would not shock me at all if he were watching Week 1 of the NFL season on his HDTV.

Everyone seems to like Gaffney better but I think it's because he is better looking. No bug eyes or anything. Then they rationalize their shollowness with BS football "facts" that don't matter. When it comes to popularity contests like this on a message board better looking people usually win the battle for hearts and minds. It's been proven by social scientists. :)

Curse those social scientists giving away our darkest secrets! :enranged:

I do not think Caldwell should be a D, nor Light, not Cassel for that matter.
Cassel, I'd say more a C or C-....and Caldwell more a B. Same with Light. James not an F..that is for sure. Really hard to rate players..some have one bad practice and then are OK or improve...one can make a great play and then be inconsistent..the big test is in the games..and who plays, who shines and who does poorly.

Can we get a grade for James Sanders. He's been B+/A- material so far.

I was at practice yesterday and Gaffney was CLEARLY the best receiver not named Moss. I thought that Welker would take that distinction. Wes was good, but Gaffney was Brady's "go to" guy, especially in the Red Zone. I think he'll really emerge as THE surprise of the season.

...and leave Reche's "bug eyes" alone. I don't know how ugly they are, as long as they help him find the ball. He is fine. He's working hard. He's just not as productive as Jabar. It's obvious to all who are there. The bloggers and columnists are noticing. The people around us in the stands were noticing. It's not a popularity contest. We just see what we see.

Perhaps the shallowness is you're own reflection, staring back. Then again, I'm no social scientist.

I agree with this. People are petty and idiotic. Although probably Reche looks like Brad Pitt compared to most people who post on this board. :D

I've read numerous reports, particularly this week, of Reche making some great catches. Not many reports of drops. Whatever. The Caldwell hate on this board is absurd. Anyone who thinks the guy is going to get cut and be watching week one from home is a lunatic. Worst case for Caldwell he is traded by the Pats for value.

Incidentally, I've also seen a number of reports of Faulk lighting it up in training camp. Not sure he deserves an average ranking.
