Lots of people are very happy with the Celtics trade, while others feel like we have mortgaged our long term ability to compete...question: If Bill B was running the Celtics, would he have done the same?

Wrong forum!!! :bricks: :enranged: :violent: :nono:

The question revolves around Bill B. sparky :rocker:

I don't think BB would have went for a trade like that it sounds almost like the Hershel Walker trade a few years back but I hope things work out for the Celtics because that lottery needs to be looked at I still believe the team with the worst record should get the #1 draft pick. By the way what NFL player would you give that much for personally I can't think of anyone that I would give up 5 players and two picks for.

the Redskins might of done it

If Belichick was running the team, they would be knee deep in championships by now. Dwayne Wade and Steve Nash would be begging to become a Celtic. None of us would question it when Ron Artest signed with the squad.

If BB understands the NBA, then he'd know it was a good trade. I think those against the trade by and large are stuck in MLB or NFL mindsets.

...long term ability to compete...

I don't get this. The Celts now have a 2 or 3 year window to win a title. Who said they would have competed long-term had they not made the deal? The team's been mired in mediocrity for two decades already. How much more "long-term" do people want?

On the other hand, it's a lot of short term thinking that has caused the last two decades. Trading all their young stars away to see them blossom elsewhere is just hard to take.

Of course I'm all for the trade, but there's also a high chance it won't pan out, which will also mean the Celts will be looking at a 3rd decade of mediocrity.

In 5 years, will we e saying, hey! we once drafted Chauncey Billups, Joe Johnson, Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, and we even had Ben Wallace on the team? Not to mention passing on Brandon Roy and Corey Brewer.

Exactly.

As I said in another thread, at what point in time would a team of Al Jefferson-Gerald Green+#5 pick ever have a 3 year window of winning a championship? When would they ever be that good?

If you look at this team's record last season without Paul Pierce, the winning percentage is right around the lowest in NBA history. We're talking about a historically bad team.

Thanks to the lottery system not rewarding the worst teams, free agency making it difficult for teams to acquire players outside of their roster, and a convoluted salary structure making trades a pain in the rear, getting better in the NBA is nearly impossible.

So without a true franchise player, just how on earth does that historically bad team develop into a championship contender when within 3-5 years the league will be dominated by the cast of new franchise players: Lebron, Oden, Durant, AND today's franchise players: Kobe, Dirk, Wade, Duncan, etc.....there is NO WAY.

Somehow, this team has a chance, this small window when a championship is truly in sight. It's an amazing thing to think about for C's fans.

That happens to every team. Not every team has a chance to go from worst to first, though. When that opportunity presents itself, you need to grab it and step on its throat.

The Celts are now a much better team over the next few years than they were yesterday. And it's not like they don't have any young talent.

The argument doesn't fly. If we keep Billups, and the team is slightly better, we get a slightly worse draft pick, then we don't get Jefferson, Green. Ditto for Johnson. Those players just don't accumulate.

Pitino sucked, and the Billups trade was asinine, but in all likelihood, had we kept Billups or Johnson, our record through the years up to this point wouldn't be all that different, and we wouldn't have been all that much better.

I think Belichick would do a much better job managing the Celtics 53 man roster, as well as the salary cap - and if his free agents didn't perform to their full potential, he'd cut them in a second so he could use their salaries on guys who were worth it.

Also, BB would do a much better job in the draft, finding value in the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds like he always does.

Why Ainge doesn't do the same thing, I have no idea.

Good point on Brewer and Roy, but then look at where Jefferson and Green were drafted. You can't tell me we couldn't have taken them had Billups been on the team. Not to mention all the draft picks we've traded away.

Plus the drafts that we butchered until Ainge took over...I think you can't play the "ifs and buts" games b/c each move has such a domino effect. But I truly believe that what Ainge did to get 3 legitimate All Stars on the same team is remarkable, and a team that had no hope, no light at the end of the tunnel, now matters again.

But there's also been a lot of thinking such as "Let's think long term, lose as many games as we can this year, and then draft Duncan/Durant/Oden during the offseason."

How that work out for 'em...?
