Garnett -Done deal

WEEI now reporting it's done....jefferson, green, 2 #1's, and telfair

EDIT: plus a monter extention for KG 5 years/$125mil. I would prefer a 3 year deal since he's already 32

My preference would have been to trade Pierce & start all over. But after making the Allen trade this was the obvious next chess piece to be had.

bakes I'm with you. I LOVE Big Al, and would have traded Pierce, drafted at #5, and built the team from there. However, once the Allen deal was made, we had to move forward. Big AL will be a stud, but Garnett does more for you right now, to make you a serious contender.

And we kept Rondo as well - now if we can just sign an NBA official or two we should be good for a championship!

If this is true, all we need now is a real coach!

I have to say though, Danny Ainge has to be considered a good GM now. Think about it. The C's, albeit with 30+'ers, are now legitimate contenders, if not one of the favorites, to win the NBA title. I hate to give up Big AL, but at least we have a clear goal and direction. We're not lined up for mediocrity. This will be 3-5 years of contention, with a massive decline thereafter. That's fine by me, as it's better than 20 years of mediocrity.

We have already had the 20 years of mediocrity just about!:( There is no guarranty that Jefferson will be the player some are making him out to be, with kg we know what we are getting which happens to be very much what the celtics need right now. And atleast imo i think the celtics owe this to Pierce to try and give him some players to work with finally!

As much as I liked big Al, the more I think about it, the more I like the trade. Most everyone expects big Al to be a big time player. Then, we 'think' some of the other youngsters will also be good................How many championships did the best front court in NBA history (Bird,McHale,Parish) win? Sure, they should have won more, they played another great team each year. But, you have to consider even if all your ducks are lined up in a row that nothing is guarantee. Now, we have three extremely good players and might be a role player away from a championship. After this whole process I prefer that to a whole lot of if's.

Let's let this play out and see how they do before we give Ainge any true credit - he's traded for two talented but older veterans coming off of injury. It's not hard to imagine a scenario in which Allen and Garnett get the injury bug while Jefferson blossoms into an all-star caliber player.

But while I'm more than prepared to give Ainge credit - there's a ton out of his control in terms of the draft (if we had the number one pick this would be a different situation) and players developing.

Bottom line though is that Ainge, through the draft and trades, had enough "ammunition" to make these trades happen - and if they work out well, and we waltz into the Eastern Finals, as many think we now can, it will be tough not to call this a good trade.

Oh, I agree, and the latter portion is what I meant. He at least built up enough ammo to aquire 2 HOF players with some tred left. They might not be 25, but still, in this league, you don't get top 5 talent very easily. Kg is a Top 5 talent.

Had the ping pong balls landed differently, we don't make any of these deals. That's wierd when you think about it.

And also is Ratliff...and his big contract..(looking that Gomes is NOT part of it all). And it would be 5 years extension. Interesting deal..I think it does get them into an East finals..but I do not think farther. What kind of team do they have left? Who is going to play inside?? Play D?? Distribute the ball?? I think the Timnerwolves get the best of the deal..and really wonder how much Garnett has left in the tank. It's a LOT to depend on one player..granted he is one of the best, but if he hits the "over the hill mark"...things will get ugly fast. Ainge needs to get bodies into the Garden..this will do it.

BTW Felger..(who was comparing stats of Garnett to past players..) you show how you little you know of roundball when you say how Russell never xxxx.. They never kept blocked shots or steals to a few years after he was retired. Of COURSE teh comparison isn't there. Duh!!

It may look horrible in a few years but with the state of the East you have to do this. H A V E T O. You could easily win the conference now.

LMAO, I'm reading on a Cavs' forum about how the Celtics are "just a 3 man team" . . . this coming from fans of a 1 man team :D

Exactly. I shudder to think about the 2011 Celtics, but so it goes. More important is that the team is suddenly relevant for the first time in years. It's worth taking a big chance to make that happen.

There is no way the Celts get past the Spurs.

I don't like this trade. Too much money tied up in 3 players and if they give garnett a huge extension.... the problem with this franchise is paying huge long term deals. Everytime they get rid of one they take on another.

I would have rather seen youth. Enjoy the next 4 years because after that the Celts will return to a lousy team trying to build through the draft.

This was a Danny Ainge "save my job" move.

I said the Conference :D If you give yourself a shot in the finals, you take it - who knows what could happen.

I know you said the conference and tha'ts the problem.... as BB says... "we're all about winning championships"....not conferences.

As 2001 showed, I think if you give Belichick a shot at a Conference he'll gladly take it and worry about the final game(s) when he gets there.

I think he'd take anything. But he wouldn't have traded away most of his young players for old aging stars past their prime.

Danny paid too much for KG.... he could have kept Gerald.

The team you see now is pretty much what you'll get because they traded away most of their chips.(Theo contract, AL, and Gerald).

Danny's track record on trades stinks. Let's hope this is better.

I look at it this way.

Will a team of Al Jefferson-Gerald Green-Rajon Rondo + 5th pick ever be as good as a team or Paul Pierce-Kevin Garnett-Ray Allen-Rajon Rondo + anyone?? Absolutely NEVER. Not even close.

So I truly don't understand anyone in the "three superstars doesn't make you a contender" camp somehow thinking that our young guys could ever pan out to be the three All-Stars Ainge has collected.

If these three guys don't give you a chance of winning, a group of mid-to late first round draft picks has ZERO chance.

On top of that, let's not forget how much we overrate our prospects in this town. Last summer, Ainge couldn't give Jefferson or Green away. Word around the league from other GMs was flat-out "Boston's chips aren't as good as they think they are." 17 teams passed on Green for a reason and 14 teams passed on Big Al for a reason. While I do think Al Jefferson is a beast, but we're talking about KEVIN GARNETT.
