Meriweather: 31
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

Rookie defensive back Brandon Meriweather is present for today's practice. He has switched his jersey to No. 31.

Meriweather, the team's first-round draft choice, missed Friday's first two practices as his contract had yet to be finalized.

No. 31 was last worn by Antwain Spann. Meriweather was No. 38 in June's minicamps.

Today marks the Patriots' third practice of training camp. The workout is being held in pads.

Kenny Chesney, the featured performer in today's Country Music Festival at Gillette Stadium, is present on the field. He's chatting it up with Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel.

I hope Mitchell is done and he gets 24.

What does our tightness authority think about this one?

Peyton Manning is going to be pissed about Chesney hanging around with the Pats.

He's sticking with 31 from what I've heard.

Didn't he say he wanted 27 or 29 but they gave him 38? 31 became open so he switched but I assume if Eddie Jackson is cut...he'll go 29.

Doubt it. It's unlikely he'll change his number twice, especially considering the merchandising ramifications.

I'm hoping Spann comes back with #38.

I'm hoping Law can come back with #24.

I wouldn't mind that one bit if Law would agree to restructure his 5 year, $30 million dollar deal.

I would also hope for Milloy to comeback in 36 but the current 36 looked very good yesterday and plus the situation at safety is pretty good.

I just want my past favorite Pats back.

I've pretty much forgotten about Milloy but I still have a soft spot for Law (and probably always will) even though he can be a twit.

The only way I could envision Milloy coming back is if Harrison is released, but there's probably too much bad blood there. All I know is that Sanders, Wilson, and Meriweather is a solid young corps at safety.

I don't think theres bad blood anymore. I remember Lawyer saying BB talked to him and everything got cleared up. He was hoping it wouldn't happen but its business and Milloy understands.

Milloy played great last year for Falcons but I want him more for what I remember him for. He was truly one of my favorite players and I loved his game and leadership. I'm happy with who we have but i still feel bad. :(

I agree. As soon as Moss Switched to 81 they showing them online in the Pro shop. This is still on display for Meriweather.

Theres a guy I know on KFFL - he talks to rookie DB's and helps them decide their number and etc.

He chose 31 for Meriweather and Meriweather told him that would be his number. I mentioned this like 3 weeks ago in another thread.

Can you give me the link or something to the KFFL guy? I used to post a lot at KFFL but I stopped like a month or 2 ago.

I doubt he listens to random people unless it's a close friend.

Meriweather said in an interview..."I didnt get to choose a #, they just gave me 38. Its not the # that makes the player, it's the player that makes the #, bla bla bla"

He also said his choices were 27 or 29 I think.

If you have ever posted on KFFL then you know Draft Crazy.

He runs his own football site and I just let him know about Meriweather changing to 31 he's excited.

Did anybody take any pictures of Kenny Chesney talking with some Pats? That'd be an awesome pic, one of my fave artists and my fave team.
