NFL: Colts sign 1st rounder Anthony Gonzalez

Sources representing Anthony Gonzalez informed us the 32nd pick of last April's first round has agreed in principle to a five-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts. The agreement came about at 2:30 ET.

No terms were disclosed. Gonzalez is expected to sign the deal later

i wonder if he'll start out like reggie wayne where he doesn't really do anything for the first couple of years. His first season he got only 345 yards. Reggie hit the list of elite wide receivers in his 4th season.

I liked him but wouldn't have taken him. We have Welker for the role most see Gonzalez in and I much prefer the SF #1.

Sean may be right on RoY, although I see Lynch in Buffalo as more likely. I think he's basing it on the offense and not on who he thinks is the most talented rookie.

Im basing everything together. Lnych is only as good as Losman and the Buffalo line allow him to be. You're not going to see 120 yard + games from the kid if Losman sucks and the offensive line is terrible. BUT! Buffalo has made some vast improvements on that line and Losman COULD be good this year so i have Lynch as my 2nd fav.

But Gonzalez is exactly what Manning needs out of the slot. A player who is quick and cathces and sees the ball very well. Hes a healthier version of Brandon Stokely and that did wonders for that team. Anthony fits so well into that system its not even funny.

I like the fit of Gonzalez - and I remember Stokely getting 1,000 yards as the slot guy - but with the number of WR going to teams needing WR more the Manning so ingrained into the Harrison/Wayne thing I don't think Stokely will win it.

I'm leaving out Calvin Johnson because i still think Furrey and Williams start over him for the time being and Johnson will take some time to develope in Martz's offense being either a slot man or a breather guy. I dont think he just steps right in and plays.

I'm going to have to choose from some of these rookie WR in my keeper fantasy league, it'll be difficult to pick which one I like. I actually want that RB that went to GB (I pick late enough that the guys like Lynch, Peterson, Calvin will be gone).

I'm in the same exact boat. I'm drafting #5, so I'm expecting the three you mentioned and Brandon Jackson will go with the first four picks. So I'm left with either Chris Henry as the last rookie RB who figures to get PT. It looks like LenDale White might be back in the draft pool as well, so I could opt for him, depending what training camp looks like. I expect Michael Turner to be protected, but if not he'd be my other option.

My league (12 teams) starts 3 RBs. RBs don't fall in the draft. Guys like Reuben Droughns, Ladell Betts, and Ron Dayne will be kept. Guys like Dominic Rhodes, Michael Bush, Chris Brown, and Mike Bell will probably be first round picks. That's why I hope Calvin slips through. Otherwise I hope some RB-needy team trades up with me to draft Chris Henry.

It would have taken an entirely different scenerio for the Pats to have taken Gonsales. First there would have had to been no Welker deal. For that to have happen, the Pats would have had to decide that Gonsales' skills were THAT much better than Welker's, AND he had the capability to fit into the Pats complex offense quickly.

IF the Pats had felt that way then their draft would have taken an entirely different tack. They would have taken Merriweather when they did, and NOT have traded the other #1 to this year and taken Gonsales at #28. Now STILL with a #2 in hand we MIGHT have done some trading trading down for a pick next year and a better 4th round pick, and picked up Stuart Bradley in EARLY in the 4th, and STILL have had ANOTHER first day pick for next year.

That wouldn't have looked to bad, having Gonsales (plus Jackson moving forward) to go along with Moss and Stallworth...and Brown, etc. I would opine that it might have happen like this, IF the Pats knew that they were going to wind up with Stallworth and Moss at the end of the day.

Its another case of 20-20 hindsight. IIRC, the Pats made Welker their SECOND target after AThomas, immediately making Gonsales a moot point. THEN Stallworth agreed to a contract followed by Washington, and then Moss after the first day was concluded. Given the talents of Stallworth and Moss, the Pats might have been more patient to have a guy like Gonsales split time with Brown/Caldwell, etc as potential slot receivers.

But then again 20-20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.
