The whole point is the risk Asante faces by gambling that he wont get hurt this year before he realizes his long term deal.

How stupid would his move look if he took the 8MM, blew out a knee and never got a chance to see his mega deal come to fruition.

I see his point and I don't blame him one bit. He paid his dues as far as honoring his contract and now the Patriots are doing what is well within their rights, but Asante sure is as well.

I still think he reports with two weeks to go in preseason - but man that risk won't go away.

Anyone attacking Asante on this is just being a fanboy. Being a fanboy is fine, but don't patronize people by pretending you have an objective opinion. Most people here are like attorneys representing a client: they're going to give their client's side of the story no matter who's right.

I understand what you are saying and I see Asante's side but he did choose to play football for a living. Last I checked you can get hurt doing that whether you are ni your 1st, 5th or last year of your career. You can't tell me that he has gotten this far fearing he is going to get hurt. I understand what you are saying and I see Asante's side but he did choose to play football for a living. The point isn't getting hurt, it's getting paid if he gets hurt. He chose to play a sport where he could be hurt, but he's only willing to do it for certain financial guarantees. It's not like he's torching the team's complex, all he's doing is refusing to play, something that's well within his rights. He didn't choose to play football at any cost.

It's called insurance. You know, the one you really need to have, cuz if you don't have it, that's why you need it.

Asante has to guage the risk versus reward. He hasn't made a ton of money as a 4th round pick on a rookie deal. The $7.8 is therefore a lot of money in the short term. Does he refuse to make money now, for more money later, in knowing that he might get franchised again next year? Does he sit out till week 10, and risk being franchised, along with coming in out of shape, which usually means injury? I think there are far more questions for Asante, and far more risk than most people understand. He's got some real problems to figure out, cuz there isn't anything easy about the multitude of courses he could take. Personally, were I him, I'd protect myself from injury with insurance, and play for the $8 million. If not, my second choice would be to skip till week 10 if the Pats long term offer were so insulting. The problem with the later is it lessens his value long term, and also means he just gets franchised again next year. The Pats hold the leverage here.

Like I said, I understand what the point is, I just think his reason (possibility of getting hurt and then won't collect his $$) is weak at best. How does he know that he won't get paid if he gets hurt? It's an assumption he's making based off of a possibility. I really think that he is afraid of not reproducing the same type of stats which would hurt him in the pocket more than getting injured (yes that is an assumption I am making but I think it's more valid than his).

At least if he got injured he would still be able to point to the 2006 season and say "look what I did BEFORE I got hurt" and use his injury as an excuse. Whereas if he played and didn't live up to what he did last year, teams can say, we aren't going to pay you that amount of money (what he wants) because you are a one year wonder.

Again, I see both sides of this I just don't agree with his reasons.

What about it? Everything is a risk! I'm not saying that Asante should be paid 30 million in the first 3 years, but how much are the Patriots willing to move? We already know that they have their limits. As far as I'm conecerned, anything above average market value for his position is money he has already earned. He definitely outplayed the 4yr/$2m contract, so take that into account with the contract talks. He should at least get a contract similar to Tillman or Bly. At minimum, he's worth that much!

Being a human being means, or should mean, being objective. Obviously you want your team to win, you don't need to be objective there, but if your opinions are driven by that, rather than an honest assesment of the situation, your opinion's only worth the 2 minutes you spent typing it.

If I say "A is true because of B", but actually I mean "A is true because I'm a fan of the Patriots and want it to be true", how is somebody going to take you seriously? If you're going to debate, ground yourself in fact instead of emotion.

Believe me, I'm not taking people to task here, I'm guilty of homerism once in a while just as bad as anyone else, but this whole Asante thing has really brought out the most illogical in people. It's fine if you think he should play for whatever the team offers, but don't pretend that you're basing it on any kind of logic.

13 million an a avg of 6 million a year is not chump change for a player who had 1 breakout year and 3 average up and down injury riddled years before
