Meriweather reminds me of Fred Marion

I'm a huge Sean Taylor fan. He is succeptable to the deep ball sometimes, but god damn he hits people harder than anyone in the leauge...He went to "the U" as well.....maybe he'll turn out like that!

I don't see any Bob Sanders. Meriweather will hopefully be a better version what Eugene Wilson was in 2003/4 - at least that's what I'm looking for but with better ballhawking has Wilson didn't pick many balls off. The skill sets are similar but Meriweather should have better Safety instincts as he played there in college, unlike Wilson.

I agree with this assesment. He's got some 03-04 Wilson in him (hard hitting, good cover skills), but there is no question Merriweather is a more explosive athlete. Merriweather also has a slightly larger frame so if he needed to, he could put on another 10 lbs or so and be more of a SS. At this point, he'll be more of a FS/nicelback.

I dont want to start the comparisons to Ed Reed or Sean Taylor just yet. Those 2 guys are incredible playmakers.

Fred Marion was also a very good playmaker in his own right.

My .02$

more of an SS? i hope he doesnt play SS because u take away his cover skills as opposed to him playing FS

Yeah, I don't get this Sanders/SS stuff. He's an athletic coverage guy. Not that he can't play the run but that's not WHAT he does.

With apologies to Chris Chambers and Mike Vick, there isn't a more overrated player in the league than Sean Taylor.

I think the best comparable to Meriweather is probably Michael Huff.

Vick and Chambers yes....

Sean Taylor had 114 Tackles 3 forced fumbles and one int last year plus not to mention dozens of bone crushing hits. To say he isn't the best is totally understandable, but to call him overrated? I dunno about that. Remember that hit on Moorman in the Pro Bowl last year? Who hits somebody like that in the pro bowl? Let alone a punter! The guy is either a terrible human being for hitting people so hard or is just a great competitor....

the reason hes being called overrated is because he let up a lot of plays deep.

its not all his fault though

1. He had no help around him...no pass rush..injured CBs.
2. Part of it was his fault because hes overaggresive and went hunting for plays like Ed Reed does (freelance) and caught out of position sometimes

his upside is tremendous but iwth some help, hes easily a top 5 safety. last year was a rough year for Taylor. im 1 of the biggest fans btw.

Sean Taylor is an excellent player in his own right but he has the skillset of a strong safety. Hits great, but struggles in coverage.
The Pats need Meriweather's cover skills to counter potent passing teams like the Colts who like to exploit the seam with their slot receivers and tight ends.

I say over-rated because most of his hype comes from big hits. That doesn't impress me. I'd rather a run-support safety make a quiet tackle than a loud miss. Taylor misses A LOT of tackles trying for the highlight-reel hit instead of playing technique and wrapping up the tackler. Remix also says it well in his #2 above, but I won't even get into his coverage deficiencies, because that's not his game.

Seriously, if it weren't for segments like "Jacked Up", would you ever see Taylor on a highlight reel? Probably not.

Incidently, I had the same problem with him at UM after watching him get out of the way of Greg Jones and Quincy Morgan instead of trying to make the tackle. He's great on a big hit on a WR, or cleaning up on a ball carrier coming through the tackles, but I question his courage when faced with a ballcarrier coming at him full speed, and it's just RB vs. Taylor with a touchdown hanging in the balance.

All that being said, if he matures a bit and starts listening to coaching, assuming the coaching is good, he could develop into a really good safety.

I think he will play CB before he plays SS. Played both CB and FS in college and did well at both positions.

i think your a little wrong. he didnt have a problem facing greg jones..he just got run over. he didnt shy away.

he came up and broke down and just got run over. if anyone in the league has courage to do something..its sean taylor and im telling u a dead honest answer.

ask julius jones..joseph addai..tatum bell..cadillac williams..chester taylor..maurice jones drew..tiki barber

truth be told..taylor isnt afraid of anyone. his problem is he sometimes misses tackles because he runs in full speed going for knockout and doesnt get the RB enough to bring him down. (whiff) because when ur going full speed.its hard to control yourself sometimes

quincy wilson destroyed Meriweather though..it wasnt pretty :(

My girlfriend is from D.C. and a HUGE redskins fan, so I end up going out and watching all these Skins game on T.V. each year. Every play on defense, Sean Taylor is right there. He has that same type of "nose for the football" like a Bruschi or Urlacher, basically guys who seem to always be involved, or at least 3 yards away from every single play. Taylor will only get better defending that deep pass, his true achilles heel. Nevertheless, I think he is a top 5 safety in this leauge and will be a superstar...

cover actually isnt his problem believe it or not. if he can stop roaming around trying to make play(he needs people to step it up), then he'llbe fine. he needs a pass rush or CB to do their part because when Sean isnt happy..he goes around trying to get a turnover(strip, pick, etc) and thats his problem..when he does that, he eithers misses a tackle going for strip or knockout or he gets out of position looking for a pick

put Sean Taylor in our defense and hes a HOF player no joke.

when did this become a sean taylor thread?

He played FS, SS, and CB. Meriweather has some of the skills you'd find in both a SS and a FS.

Personally I think his body size fits FS better but he could play SS if needed.

What made me so interested in Meriweather? I view him as kind of being the complete FS. He has CB coverage skills, and can play in a centerfielder type of role. He's also good at playing close to the line, and his ability to play the run is better than any of NE's other FS's. The guy can hit which can bring some energy to your defense, but that's not his entire game. Meriweather also wraps up, and didn't record so many tackles because he simply tried to knock everyone out. Meriweather's made plays behind the LOS in run&pass blitzes displaying good timing on those blitzes. He's intelligent, rarely bites on play fakes, and he's called defensive assignments so he could take over that role when Rodney leaves.
