If Meriweather didn't have any incidents on and off the field and had a clean slate, would he have lasted till the 24th pick? what do you guys think...

Re: Merriweather would he last?

there were plenty of db's that were first round quality. if it wasn't him we drafted, then it would have been another. e.g. jaguars take meriweather instead of reggie nelson, causing us to take reggie instead. Things could have been affected by your conditions, but it wouldn't have mattered

I forget who it was, but I remember hearing that there was a team ready to pounce him before the Pats. I think he could've been a 15-20 pick myself, but I'm just basing this on what I've read and saw him do when Miami games were televised. I root for the Seminoles so I did keep an eye on him when we played the 'Canes.

Re: Merriweather would he last?

Odds are he would have been drafted higher. With Goodell's code of conduct policies, any player with questions on their character probably dropped.

No way of telling though. There are a lot of player who rise and fall in the draft for no apparent reason or because there is a run on one position or another. We got Wilfork in the 21 when he was supposed to be a top 10 pick. We drafted Warren at 13th because most of the first round DTs were taken in the top 10.

No, after Landry Meriweather was considered the next best safety. His issues off field and on is what drove teams away especially in the new NFL.

More than likely he would have been taken by TENN, JAX or GB.

I think it was the Eagles if im not mistaken...

He was the third safety taken......just where he was supposed to be.

If we hadn't taken him at 25....he would not have lasted lasted until 28.

His off-field transgressions had nothing to do with
his final draft position.

IMO,he's a better choice than Reggie Nelson, because he can play CB,also.

Also,if I had to choose between Merriweather at 25 and Darelle Revis, including giving up 2 draft choices......I'll take Merriweather.....

The key here is we don't need this kid to start right away.......If Revis,Landry.or Reggie Nelson, don't
start and play at a high level, immediately.

Their teams are in serious trouble.

The Jets made a foolish mistake giving up so much for Revis, considering that their gross weakness is at DL and QB.

Fourth:

Landry, Nelson, Griffin, Meriweather.

I disagree. Part of why he was "supposed to be" the 3rd safety taken WAS the character stuff, which is what this thread hypothesizes to set aside.

Re: Merriweather would he last?

Not really sure how much his off-field incidents affected his draft stock, but the Eagles would have gotten him if we didn't. Not sure if that helps...

I'll agree that he was the 4th rated safety, however,I

still contend that his stock did not drop because of his transgressions.

The Eagles would have grabbed this guy in a heartbeat,if he fell to them.

The Patriots,easily,could have traded # 24 and used # 28.......Merriweather is the reason,they didn't.

Believe it or not,but the perception before the draft
was that Landry and Griffin were "dumb as rocks"

Nelson and Werriweather we're not.

This might not concern other teams, but with the
Patriots,is a big factor.

Re: Merriweather would he last?

Maybe I am missing something here, but do not really believe that the Pats would waste a draft pick on someone with character issues, his character issues need to be put into a context. The off field gun stuff is easily explainable, his on field stuff is not as easy, but more easy in the context of the SEC Hysteria...

I think Nelson was the one who was supposed to be dumb.

Meriweather would have been taken before Nelson and Griffin if it weren't for the character concerns. The problem was that Tennessee and Jacksonville both have so many character issues on their teams already, they couldn't add another to the mix.

The Cowboys, and Eagles were interested in him that we know for sure, but there were other teams rumored to have interest as well. It would have been interesting to see his draft stock without the "red flags" but it doesn't matter now, and I'm happy NE got him.

Brady Quinn falling was one of the best things to happen on draft sunday.

Also, what's funny is how many eggs the Eagles put into Meriweather being there at 26, and how they were basically shocked when NE picked him. A reporter who was in the Eagles war room basically said you could tell that was who they really wanted when NE selected him, and this caused the moves they made. Funny, how much Brady Quinn's falling, and NE's picking Meriweather effected the first round.

Pats drafted him at 25? 24th.

I don't know where you're getting your info but that statements is dead wrong!

Landry, Griffin, and Meriweather were all considered to be smart players, while Mr. Reggie Nelson was rumored to be a complete moron. Different scouts were talking about his low IQ just weeks before the draft, and some wondered if it would hurt his draft stock.

Nelson's getting drafted were he did was more a product of the Jags infatuation with the Florida program. They're the only team in the NFL with more U of Florida products than NE, and they took Reggie out for Supper at very swank establishments......almost like they were a college program, lol!

Don't see what's wrong with taking your draft prospect out to dinner. Nelson seemed to be a very impressive prospect imo. Meriweather might end up just as good... as long as he keeps his nose clean. I think he'll toe the line in the Pats lockerroom though which is why I think they took the risk on drafting him.

I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, it just reminds me of HS players getting recruited to play for college programs.

Now when it comes to Meriweather and Nelson I've said all along I think Meriweather's the better prospect, since he's not only good in coverage but also a very good tackler, a hard hitter, and intelligent (was a defensive captain and gave out defensive assignments). Nelson's not a good tackler, and scouts have questioned his intellect.

Actually Nelson was the supposed dumbass. Griffin's work ethic and attitude were draws, and I don't think anybody considered him stupid.
