Hey, Im all for making fun of Michael Vick. I hope he gets his due for any possible cruel things he's done to animals, dogs, or any others that he's condoned in his lifetime. Also, I understand the pic, the humor involved in it and so on. However, as a proud owner of two pits (I feel like I have to defend them atleast once a wk to anyone who sees them) I don't really appreciate pictures that depict the breed in that manner.
Kind of a double edged sword, and if their is any ignorant, uninformed posters on this board (which I know their are) you're just giving them ammo to bash. The picture really should be taken down. Just my opinion.

The breed was named "pit bull" for a reason, was it not? That obviously has something to do with its reputation as a fighting dog. As for the photo, lighten up -- no one is bashing dogs, they're bashing evil scumbag Vick, who took delight in murdering the dogs you love.

You are right, the dog is a mix. I know you have been slamming Vick the whole time, and like I said in my post, I get the joke, I really do. Sorry, I just think it's irresponsible to post a picture like that. I'm coming from a different place than you guys are I guess. C'mon - the guy's not all that bad. After all, he did give the incredible sum of $10,000 to the victims fund of his alma mater, Va Tech.

Clearly the guy's all heart. He'll probably be saying "Goodbye" to Dog Fighting but "Hello" to ****fighting - though he'll learn that in prison, that means something else entirely.

Vick's pitbulls aren't the bad representation, but the fact that Michael Vick fighting the dogs is harming the breed, is creating a bad representation... not the other way around...

People need to remember, he outright KILLED the pitbulls who failed to fight or who weren't winners...Not all Pitbulls like to fight,(it becomes a fight or flight situation for them) and they aren't born that way, it is something they are taught... Which is why they are in pits, to take the "flight" instinct away and FORCE them to fight for survival... Dogfighting is a brutal, blood sport and it was not created by the dogs, but people, humans, made them this way...

Since this can of worms has been opened, I'd like to ask a question about pitbulls: They got their name for their reputation as fighting dogs, right? I love all animals, dogs especially, but pitbulls have always creeped me out a little, probably because they have a slight "reptilian" look to them. They seem to be popular with inner-city folk because of their tough reputation. Are they aggressive dogs by nature? Just curious.

Pitbulls and types are actually quite people friendly, some however can be dog or animal aggressive... The responsible and ethical pitbull(and types-other "bully" breeds) breeders have long breed out the animal/dog aggression out of these dogs to have a solid, friendly canine friend who can live with other animals peacefully... You do have, however, the irresponsible ones, who still breed the dogs to have a high prey instinct, but even with this, these dogs STILL have to be trained to exhibit that behavior(animal/dog aggression) to have it on a regular basis... Dogfighters will kill a dog if it loses, they will also kill the dog if it shows human aggression... I have a cop friend here in Atlanta, who told me on one of his drug raids, the drug dealer had pitbulls as his "guard dogs" surrounding the property... Those dogs who were suppose to be ON DUTY ending up kissing, hugging and loving on the officers during the raid, not one of them displayed the "guard dog" duties it was there to do... And I saw the pictures as proof... People can make any dog what they want it to be.. I can go get a black lab or a golden retriever puppy(currently America's dogs) and in a year have that dog full out aggressive at everything, people and other animals... The working breeds, are a working breed, they need exercise, training and a understanding of behaviors that some people just don't understand... If you are getting a dog, you can't just throw it out in the back yard and expect it to excerise itself or train itself... If you don't show the dog how to act and show how to have manners around other dogs and people, how can you get mad at the dog? It was the dog's owners who failed the dog and set the dog up for failure BY NOT SHOWING THE DOG HOW TO ACT... Having any dog is a responsiblity, I tell people all the time, it's a second job... You have to be able to spend time with the dog, working through things... If you are potty training your child, what steps and methods are you going to go through? What life lessons are you going to teach your child as it gets older? Same concept with a dog.

Joy's Story - A pitbull that I found wandering the streets of Atlanta, skinny and afraid, she shows the resilance of the breed and even when neglected, their personality of love towards humans and animals still shines bright... Joy, has long been adopted now, and because of Joy, her new owners are now heavily involved in the rescuing of pitbulls in the Atlanta area...

As President of the AKC Canine Health Foundation, I would be remiss if I didn’t address an issue affecting the health of dogs and the shameful allegations brought against Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback, Michael Vick. As you have heard, Vick will be in a Federal courtroom in Virginia on July 26 being arraigned on charges that he sponsored a despicable and appalling dog fighting operation on his property.

My concern and sympathy of course goes to the dogs who were allegedly affected and so brutally murdered through the course of this “sport.” But, as a responsible breeder and a fancier, I am also concerned with the general public’s perception of the various breeds involved. According to “The Complete Dog Book,” a publication of the American Kennel Club, there are several breeds originally involved in the “sport” of dog fighting including the Bulldog. Originally bred to bait bulls, the purpose of the breed was sorely corrupted and soon degraded into the extremely cruel “sport” which was banned in England in 1835. Responsible nineteenth century breeders resurrected the breed and set themselves to the task of breeding for temperament and to eliminate the undesirable qualities and characteristics. The result is the lovable, obedient, and docile dog which regularly garners large rounds of applause from audiences who attend dog shows around the country.

Although dog fighting is banned and a felony in the United States, I can assure you that this disgusting practice is still taking place. From the back alleys of major cities to the posh and stylish mansions of multi-millionaires, this repugnant “sport” is just outrageous and offensive, and it’s our duty as responsible breeders who are concerned about the health of our dogs to speak up and end this criminal activity. I urge you as responsible breeders and dog lovers to expose these atrocities, to work diligently to eliminate these heinous deeds and to join the millions who are appalled and bewildered by these cruel acts.

It is our responsibility to let the general public know that for these precious canine companions it is all about nature vs. nurture – that these various breeds involved in the “sport” are not bred this way, but are baited and beaten into submission and forced to live this life. It’s our duty and obligation to take a stand – for the sake of all our dogs.

No, I never said anything about michal vicks dogs being a bad representation. I pointed out that putting that picture up (of a mixed breed PITX) trying to MAUL somebody was IRRESPONSIBLE and a BAD representation regardless of what Vick has done. How does that not make any sense? Albeit what Vick has done, putting a picture of a pitx trying to maul him only adds to the misconception of the breed. Like I said. I understand the intent of the joke. And, I also know that there was no harm meant in it. However, it was a bad one to make.

As the Board Chairman and President & CEO of a 123-year-old sport-governing body, we are very much aware of the conflicting pressures you face in the matter of the Michael Vick indictment.

Michael Vick is not only a nationally known superstar, but he is also the face of the National Football League’s Atlanta franchise. The Atlanta Falcons will not take any unilateral action on the matter because of the negative impact both in their financial liability and their on-field performance. The buck thus stops with you as NFL Commissioner.

It is easy to take the position that you will just let the legal process play out, and that he is innocent until proven guilty, which is what the NFL and the Falcons, as well as the players association, have done to date. However, the nature of the crimes described in detail in the indictment in this case are so heinous and repulsive that they should be strongly condemned by any civilized person. This activity is anathema to everything the American Kennel Club stands for, and the millions of AKC registrants and competitors, many of whom have been NFL fans, unilaterally condemn it and those who perpetrated it.

It is common for state laws to recommend the immediate suspension of a teacher when charged with certain crimes. To acknowledge the severity of Mr. Vick’s charges, we urge his immediate suspension.
