PATs OL #2 in league.

Re: PATs Oline #2 in league.

They mention Wesley Britt but not O'Callaghan?

Re: PATs Oline #2 in league.

I agree the central philosophy of this team, is a very good QB and lock the very good players up in the trenches.. the longer they play together the better they get, the sum is greater than the individual parts.

Re: PATs Oline #2 in league.

I have to disagree with where they rank the Colts. They have a very good O-line and it isn't just because of Manning. I think they are as good if not better than the Pats O-line. Manning may be able to call out the protections but the players still have to execute.

Even better, they're built up an immunity to holding penalties. :D

I'd have to agree.

Not sure how valid these rankings were in 2006 let alone project in 2007. I didn't feel like we had even the 7th best OL in the league. A couple of guys from PFW were on with Felger yesterday and one thing they commented on I'd have to agree with. That this line hasn't really lived up to it's billing just yet, and it better if Brady is to continue to be a force. He avoids a lot of sacks, but he's still had the **** knocked out of him on way too many occasions over the last couple of seasons and one of these times if that persists he's liable to not get right back up. They have also had RB injuries to deal with but it's not like they've opened up gaping holes for their guys to make playing dinged up any easier. Hopefully some new blocking schemes better suited to them and our young now featured RB will help in that area and a plethora of WR talent will make pass blocking a little less of an adventure. As taken as they appear to be with Kaczur I unfortunately think the jury remains out on him, and at 28 he'd better have gotten his act together or RT is TBD.

I find it interesting to see that a statistical analysis of oline play ranked the Pats #2. I think we're top 5, but thought that the line had faltered a bit over the past 2 years. I guess we're our own harshest critics.

Dante is the best position coach in the league. We have a fine set of NINE offensive linemen. The entire line is signed long-term. IMHO, the ONLY issue we have is in the health of our tackles. This has been an issues for the past three years. Dante always has a couple of Practice Squad linemen in the wings. He is even allowed to pay them as if the are on the 53 man squad. Right now the ONLY question I have is O'Callaghan's health. He may need to retire. I believe Kaycur is back at close to 100%. Light certainly is.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is wrong with O'Callaghan that he may need to retire??!!

You can say that again. I am amazed every time I watch Indy at just how much grabbing they get away with on the line. Every single game that NE plays them, Seymour will have an "Ole!" play where he gets by his man immediately only to have his jersey stretching out behind him as the OL holds on for dear life.

Oddly enough, I have never heard any rrumblings of the competition committee looking into the excessive holding by the OL.

Edited to add that I agree with most of the posts here that NE's OL hasn't quite earned that lofty of a ranking just yet.

Possibly because members of the committee have been flagged for illegal holding of opposing coaches.

They're better at making the holding less obvious, or did Polian pass another rule to allow them to? ;)

Yes, Tommy has had the **** knocked out of him in the past two years, but before we focus too closely on the O-line, we might ponder what defenses can do to disrupt Tommy. Peyty is a very fine QB, but it's been proven that he can be fooled by a good secondary scheme; perhaps not as often as we'd like, but Ty Law and Asante Samuel can speak to his human side.

Tommy appears to be the best current QB at reading a defense, he's the guy of whom we boast, bragging that his favorite receiver is the open man. It is my belief that opposing defenses are hitting Tommy more because they see no other way to disrupt him in the pocket. We can lay part of the blame on the O-line's shortcomings, but I'd lay the majority on Tommy being so good that opposing defenses make more of an effort to reach him and try to knock him off his game, if not out.

I would like to see a stronger run game, maybe this is the season that happens. For pass protection, this O-line is quite good and seems to have been built with the goal of keeping Tommy alive - first and foremost.

Re: PATs Oline #2 in league.

I wish. The crap they get away with is blatant. I griped about it when we owned the Colts, I gripe about it now, I gripe about it no matter who they're playing. How many times have we seen a defender beat the OL, get whiplash from a jersey yank, and no flag? It's amazing.

O'Callaghan has shoulder issues coming out of college. He also suffered 2 concussions last year, the 2nd one, basically sidelining him for the entire season.

Here is his injury history from college:
nfldraftscout.com said:
2002: Underwent surgery in March to have screws inserted into his fractured left hand.

2003: Had surgery in July to remove a piece of cartilage from his left shoulder.

2004: Underwent right shoulder surgery in January and the following month. Had surgery on his right shoulder to clean out loose debris and tighten the AC joint...Sat out a week of practice in December when he suffered a concussion (12/10).

2005: Underwent his third surgical procedure on his left shoulder in January...Suffered a right wrist fracture vs. UCLA (10/08)...Sat out the Washington State game (10/22) with a concussion.

So, O'Callaghan has had 4 concussions over the last 3 years that have cost him playing time.

That is why he may have to retire.

i think the colts and broncos o-line should both be higher. I remember ty warren saying that the Denver O-line was the toughest line to face off against.
The pats line is definitely solid. Good competition at the right tackle position and guys competing for probowls in the middle. not to mention forever former probowler Matt Light.

With guys like Moss and Stallworth on the outside running deep patterns, it becomes imperative that this O line pass block better and longer than ever before. Brady is going to have to hold the ball a little longer this year and that scares me. Watson needs to learn to run the same routes Ben Coates did, 8 yards and a buttonhook, slant or out route if Brady is blitzed. .
Although, the good news is that with Moss and Stallworth on the outside, defenses can't play 8 men in the box and double cover both. Could be huge 1st halves of games for the Pats WRs and huge second halves for the RBs.

Yeah, I could be wrong on this but having good WR, even ones running longer routes, should help the OL as it's practically impossible to imagine single covering everyone and rushing everyone else as defenses could do with our WR last year.

When it's third-and-1 and the Patriots absolutely have to have a yard, there's no better line in the league. Guard Logan Mankins, especially, is outstanding when the Patriots need a hard push in shot-yardage situations.

What's missing from this scenario?

I think the Pats Oline will look better without the receiver merry go round, but that 3rd and 1 absolutely have to have it line didn't get it with Dillon on the bench last year.

Did you just make this up? I have found nothing or anything close to similar that Callaghan may have to retire or consider it.
