Does anyone know if something like this has ever happened? Have there been instances of professional football (or any sport) players from wealthy families who take only a small salary? If it has, I can't imagine that it's too common.

I'm astounded that any company finds it worth it to pay any model as much as $33m a year. (That's combined from all her contracts, I guess.) Does it really matter that much if you substitute in a different face for, like, $50,000 instead? How can it be worth it to pay a model that much?

It just goes to show that PT Barnum is right.

And don't think for a second that the consumers aren't paying her salary through higher prices for whatever it is that she's peddling.

Whoever is paying her the money she is being paid, doesn't deserve to have that money in the first place.

The entire fashion/hollywood "industry" disgusts me.

Sure, there is a lot of similarity. But the difference is this. However hyped you are as a football player and however slick your marketing machine, there comes a time when they play the game and reality takes over. (See under Vick, Michael.)

I agree with you. I guess my point is that professional athletes and models both earn what the market will support. She wouldn't make that money if she wasn't earning her employers even more money.

I'm female, and I don't get the fashion industry. But I think you have to be consistent in your beliefs. They're both businesses. Manning's employers think he is worth X dollars - the same goes for Giselle (I don't even know how to spell her name!).

Bodies count too. Especially when you're on the runway. It's safe to say not many models have a body like hers.

Well, if you want your product line to be forgotten instantly, you pay $50k.

Put it this way, you're making a movie. You can either hire Tom Cruise, or a guy that's better looking and a better actor than Cruise for 1/50th of the price (such actors exist, say for instance Billy Crudup).

You're the producer. What do you do?

Yes.

How many people here could afford season tickets to the Celtics? I bet not many (Football is much more affordable, of course). But people look at the money thrown around in sports as being insane, and it is. Sometimes I think we're reliving the days when anything going on in the Roman Coliseum was a hot ticket.

Well, then we need a league that pays for play. The NFL isn't that league. Look at the guy's earning big dough for nothing.

Plus, a model is paid to do her thing, and whoever does it best, gets paid. I don't know what the criteria are either, but it seems to me the one with the great body usually wins. That's their reality. Same thing in football. The so-called reality is just as much a production and manufacture as any other entertainment industry. We saw this when the rules were changed to favor Peyton Manning. Yeah, he produces better on the field now than he did in 2004. But the criteria were changed to make that fact a reality at some point.
