Sirius Radio is reporting that the Freeney deal is "done": 6-yrs/$72M, $30M guaranteed. Apparently this makes him the highest paid defensive player in the league.

Good move by the Colts - I've got a lot of respect for Freeney - as do a bunch of Patriots players I'd bet.

Let's give credit to Freeney for his good attitude in getting this deal done too - he generally kept his mouth shut, said all the right things about respecting the team and wanting to play for the Colts, and even attended voluntary offseason activities without a long term contract.

Are you paying attention Asante?

Good thing the Pats weren't renegotiating Seymour's contract this year with Freeney and Peppers pushing the market that much higher.

According to ESPN it actually makes him the highest paid defensive player in league history.

Re: OT: Freeney signed: 6yr/$72M, $30M guaranteed

Imagine what he'd make if he could play the run!

Re: OT: Freeney signed: 6yr/$72M, $30M guaranteed

they HAVE to be planning to let Marvin go after this season, which makes sense because he's like 50....they already had to restructure a couple big contracts this season to get wiggle room for this season and Bob Sanders is up for a new deal next season.

Re: OT: Freeney signed: 6yr/$72M, $30M guaranteed

Boston Built... what are you talking about. Marvin Harrison is still probably the best receiver in the game. But damm.. 12 mil a year for a pure pass rusher...Thats a bit steep. Just imagine what Shawn Merriman could get.

Re: OT: Freeney signed: 6yr/$72M, $30M guaranteed

I don't know if I would have made that deal. Freeney has been living more off reputation than production the last season and a half. Maybe he was injured or the fact that the center of the d-line was affecting the number of double or triple teams he was getting, but he hasn't been performing close to the best defensive player in the league.

Personally, I always thought of Freeney as an one-trick pony. He is a great pass rusher and not much else. He hasn't been all that great of a pass rusher recently. He only had 5.5 sacks last year and 3 of them came against the Bengals who had both of their starting tackles out for most of the game. Levi Jones was out because of injury and Willie Anderson was injured in that game.

Polian is gambling a lot that last year was a fluke.

By the way, how much do you wanna bet that Asante Samuel's agent says that Freeney's deal is very relevant to Samuel's situation after he said Vasher's contract had nothing to do with Samuel's situation. It is only a matter of time that his agent uses Freeney's contract publically.

I am afraid of what Shawne Merriman's going to want/get.

Well...Chargers could always say "You got dominated by Matt Light...so no way do we give you X amount."

Well Seymour was the highest paid player in the league last year. His bonuses bumped his total payout to over 24 million dollars for 2006.
So the Pats weren't really cheap last year, they just decided to give all their leftover money to Seymour.
I think that's why they were able to go on a spending spree in free agency in 2007.

Well if you're getting 30M guaranteed in bonuses I would hope that you could keep your mouth shut! LoL.

Yeah but that came signing bonus. Next year his base is $600,000.

Thomas will be a high # next year from his bonus and guaranteed.

i kinda doubt they'd let one bad game affect contract talks
if that were the case freeney wouldn't have cashed in lol

This is an accurate take on Freeney IMO. I'm sure some pseudo expert/Colts fan will try to come along and dispute later on in the thread, however.

I am not sure I would make that gamble... too much money on the line for this guy.. as good as he is, he is not a multi dimensional NFL player.

He's still one of the best in the game, no doubt, but even the best eventually gets old. Did you notice who was - or seemed to be - Peytons favorite target in the post season? It wasn't Harrison. Marvin was playing with injured hands and who knows what else and it seemed like they only threw to him on sideline routes where he could get out of it without taking a hit. He's getting old, plain and simple. They paid Wayne because they are grooming him to replace Harrison, and my guess is that they'll make that replacement sooner rather than later. The question to me is will Harrison retire a colt or will he try his luck with another club? Only need to see Rice out there catching passes in a Raider uniform in the 03 Raiders/Packers game replay the other night on NFLN to see that eventually even the best will retire or move on....

just my $.02, I'm far from an expert ;)

I wouldn't myself. Actually, I think Robert Mathis may be the better DE in terms of versatily. He is a bit more rounded and have had on less sack (31.5 vs. 32.5), a lot more tackles (157 vs. 100), and more forced fumbles (16 vs. 14) than Freeney over the last three years.

Teams have shown that you can very effectively run right at Freeney. That is big when you are paying him that type of money.

Re: OT: Freeney signed: 6yr/$72M, $30M guaranteed

They should have paid him twice as much. :)

Maybe this will drive up the Colts salaries lol

Yep, nothing like getting dominated by a Pro Bowler...

I agree with your comments. He is a one dimensional player. All he does is run to the QB. He rarely plays the run. You can run draws at him all day. He'll run right by the running back.
