Since there is no 3rd QB at the present time and I don't think Vinny is returning I think there is a chance that BB will keep his promise and keep Troy on the team even if he does not beat out the top 5 receivers and even if there are little or no injuries on the team which leads me to believe it is a possibilty that Troy is kept on the roster as a 3rd QB,even if the whole secondary is kept full it might even make more sense to do it.

Anything is possible when it comes to troy's flexibility on this team, after all he was 4th on the QB depth chart last year.

How does that work on gameday? I can't remember what happened last year before we signed Vinnie. Do you have to designate somebody an emergency QB? If they did what you suggest, would that mean Brown would basically be innactive most weeks on game day? If so, I'm not sure that helps us as he wouldn't be able to contribute in the secondary or special teams if needed during the course of the game -- which is a lot of his value, that he jump into those roles.

but if we don't have to designate a 3rd QB by rule (and again, i just can't remember how it was handled last year pre-vinnie), then it probably makes a lot of sense.

I'm sure they don't have to designate someone. If they do they could just designate any of their 8 active-roster players who don't dress for gameday, say, Billy Yates.

The "emergency QB" rule is a pseudo-exemption to the 45-man game day roster. If you designate an emergency QB, that 46th player can dress up, and can enter the game if the starting and backup QBs are both hurt during the first three quarters (he can also enter at any point during the 4th quarter). However, if the emergency QB enters the game in any capacity before the start of the 4th quarter, neither of the other QBs can re-enter the game. (In other words, if Testaverde had been #2 and Cassel #3, if Cassel came in to hold for Gostkowski during the first three quarters, Cassel would have had to finish the game at QB.)

So, if your plan is to have the Pats designate Troy Brown the emergency QB, then you're limiting him to the 4th quarter only.

More over it doesnt really affect the non game day roster numbers so doesnt really get you an extra player that any other team couldnt get by carrying 2 QBs.

Caldwell played QB in high school - maybe he's the emergency QB on the roster.

Can you imagine the eyes of Caldwell as a QB?

He would look like one of those cat clocks back in the 70s that had big eyes going left and right and the tail wagging on the bottom

Nah, Gaffney would be a way better choice at 3rd QB than Caldwell ;)

Wasn't Faulk designated as the emergency qb at some point?

I doubt it since as described above he would not have been allowed to play the 1st 3 quarters of that game.
