Kilroy passes away

Francis "Bucko" Kilroy, who was originally hired by the Patriots in 1971 as their player personnel director and spent 64 years working in the NFL, has passed away, the Patriots confirmed tonight. He was 86.

Kilroy was responsible for selecting the team's first two Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees, John Hannah (1973) and Mike Haynes (1976). He is credited with building some of the best teams in franchise history.

Kilroy most recently served as a scouting consultant in 2006.

86 years old and 64 years working in the NFL.......Not a bad way to spend your life indeed.

I hope he is going to a well deserved rest.

"Kilroy most recently served as a scouting consultant in 2006."

His health must have kept him out of this year's draft. Go with God Bucko.

Bucko, Bucko, Bucko...this world needs a few more Buckos. You're probably the real reason I'm a Pats fan....thank you.

Amen, one tough hombre, the Rodney Harrison of his day. As a Pats front office person, he was one of those responsible for drafting John Hannah and Mike Haynes.

64 years in the NFL....has anybody ever had an affiliation that long with the league?

I was surpised that he was 86, I thought he was only his 70's. I was also suprised to see that he still had been had been involved with the Patriots during the BB era.

RIP Bucko.

I think Wellington Mara started as a ball boy for the Giants at 8.

He was a six-time All-Pro guard with the Eagles. In 1948, when the Eagles defeated the Chicago Cardinals for the NFL championship in a snowstorm at Shibe Park, Kilroy's fourth-quarter fumble recovery set up the game's only score, Steve Van Buren's 5-yard run.

During a 64-season NFL career, including 36 years with the Patriots, Kilroy also worked in player personnel and scouting for the Eagles, Washington and Dallas, and mentored others who went on to lead NFL scouting departments. He was working for the Eagles when they won their last title, in 1960.

Kilroy was one of the founders of the National Football Scouting Combine, and had been a scouting consultant for the Patriots the past 13 years.

Kilroy joined the Patriots as personnel director in 1971, and selected two of New England's Hall of Famers, guard John Hannah in 1973 and cornerback Mike Haynes in 1976. From 1976-78, Patriots teams he built compiled a 31-13 record, including two playoff appearances. He was New England's general manager from 1979-1982, and vice president from 1983-1993. *

Every year up until last he was pictured in the Pats yearbook with the rest of the admins. Don't know how much a role he played the last few years but he's sure been a staple around here for a long time.

Sorry I was wrong. He is pictured in the 2006 as scouting consultant.

I don't know if everybody has seen this but if you go to Patriots.com there is a Bucko Kilroy video from NFL films you can click on. It highlights his playing career as one of the dirtiest players of his time. I highly recommend it. Very entertaining to watch.

My goodness! Those guys don't pull their punches -- and nor, to judge by the video, did Bucko!
