Good for him. Still in the league.

thats his best spot right now for an opportunity. Andre Johnson is 1 starter..whos the other. If he worked harder at the mental part..he can be special. Hes fast..looks built..strong. Hes made some nice plays on offense and special teams. He needs to be consistent with hands and learn playbooks and routes.

can u believe hes already 28? wow

i remember getting so excited after his surgery and how good he was in minicamp and 1 of the offseason winners. he needs to stay healthy first of all. hes always hurt.

Just goes to show, there's a real dearth of good receivers around the league and so teams are prepared to take a chance on the "could be" guys. Good luck to him, I guess.

Bethel issomewhat overly maligned on this board. He came up and made any number of big plays for the Pats over the 2004-2005 run. True, he never materialized into a top notch #1 guy, but he did make some game-changing contributions.

dude...he never materialized into a topnotch #3 guy...or even #4 for that matter...

Very true, the TD return against the Colts in 2003 and the incredible catch against the Seahawks were huge and I will aways remember them fondly. In 2003 his average as a kick off returner was better then Dante Hall.

I wish him well. He helped us more than he hurt us, I can state quite subjectively.

Nice TD bomb catch against the Tits in the playoffs too!

Isn't Bobby Grier with the Texans? To him, Bethel = Tony Simmons, part II. Bobby will never learn.

Yeah, but he made a handful of big plays in his Pats career. What about his big TD catch in the 1st quarter of the playoff game against Tennessee.

dude... he never materialized. .

still, if there's a rash of WR and KR injuries in the pre-season the Texans might get some trade value out of him... one, maybe even two cases of Gatorade!

The problem with BJ is that nearly all of his big plays happened in his rookie season. The only one that I can think of after 2003 was the Seattle catch. In 2003 there was a litany of key plays beyond the Indy TD and the TN TD. Here are just a few that I remember:

* A Troy Brown-type strip after a goal line int thrown by Brady. NE subsequently got 3 extra points they would not have gotten in a close call against Hou. Bethel also had a TD in this game.

* The second big return against Indy after Indy had come all the way back.

* The big return against Denver after Denver scored a TD just before half-time. NE put a figgie up and the 17-13 deficit seemed much easier to overcome.

But Johnson was worse every single year. Even his KRs became average to below average. I'm not so sure if NE wins the SB without him in 2003, but he earned every bit of the maligning by being a jackass.

the long pass against the titans is the only game changing play i remember along with the kick off return against the colts before half time

The long catch against the Seahawks was game changing too, IIRC.

I always thought that Bethel would develop into a real deep threat receiver if only he could stay healthy. But I obviously over-estimated his attitude and work ethic. If they had been better, I think that the Patriots would have stuck with him.

Agreed. it's his best chance to catch on and stay with a team for more than a year, provided he does more than jog to the huddle and say, "I'm open deep." With his size and quickness, he should be a better possession guy, shouldn't he?

People on this board have been tough, but he's had plenty of opportunities to gain success. When the problem' s not athleticism, it has to be something else.

Wasn'r he cut from the Eagles because he couldn't pass a physical?

I 'll always remember the return he took all the way for a TD at the Colts game,in Indy. That was a great game of football!Anyway, good luck to him,as another poster said,if his head could catch up with his physical skills(his speed anyway),he would be a great WR.

I'm not sure which the bigger surprise is here. That Bethel got another shot with an NFL team or that Bobby Grier still has a job in the NFL?
