The top 3 best Patriots head coaches of all time

o.k. Its a no brainer as to whom is the best coach of all time for the Patriots,Its our current beloved Bill Belichick.

However from there goes the discussion of who fits as second and third best coach ever to be the HC here

You can argue Bill Parcells was second best coach and yes,he did turn around a sad franchise,with Kraft's help of course...but

I think Raymond Berry should be considered 2nd best of all - He took a team as bad in early 80s and with a shaky QB and took them to the Super Bowl after the team stuggled immensely under Ehrhardt.

So if you ask me the top 3 head coaches ever to coach the Patriots in order..
1) Bill Belichick
2) Raymond Berry
3) Bill Parcells

If you are under 35 you probably don't remember much of Berry's leadership on that 80s team which was very well respected.

Also note that even though Parcells is a HOF coach does not put him 2nd best overall,IMO - After all he was only 32-32 in his tenure here while Berry was 48-39 -Thats 9 games over .500

**** MacPherson - missed his calling as a cheer-leading coordinator. Would have been one of the best of all time IMHO.
"Pumped and Jacked" Carroll - Somehow was shocked when NE would go into half-time down 17-6, make no adjustments, and then lose 34-10. Bonus points for consistently winning 1-2 games less than they shoud have.

Carroll was not a very good HC here but remember,At least he was a + on the Wins,Losses side of HC - I think he was 5 games over .500 after his firing.,More than I can say of the likes of McPherson,Ehrhardt and Rust (whose last name fit his head coaching talent)

Chuck Fairbanks should be considered 4th best of all time - He did have 2 less wins than Berry with the same amount of losses but what really seperates the 2 was while Fairbanks was coaching he had what was arguably the Best Patriots team of all time in 1976 and could not bring them a championship - Both Parcells and Berry had simply horrible teams that they brought back into respectability - IMO many head coaches would have done well with those mid-70s Patriots teams who were so talent laden.

What are the criteria for judging the "best" head coach of all time? # of super bowls? # of wins? winning percentage?

The bottom line is if you were head coach of the Patriots when they had a great QB, you won and if you were head coach of the Patriots when they had an average of horrible QB, you either did fairly well or lost.

All that being said, my all time best HCes would be as follows:

Parcells. He came in under a lame duck owner, Othweiner, had Bobby Grier picking his players and had them in the bowl in 3 years.

BB. He came in under the best owner in sports, Kraft, had total control of personnel, and had them winning the super bowl in 2 years with a lot of help from Brady.

Berry. He had a knack for keeping the players insulated from all the turmoil and distraction that is the NFL circus under horrible ownership. He kept the team loose, but focused on the job on the field. His extremely understated approach put a ton of responsibility on his co-ordinators and they thrived because of it. And he benefited from working with a tremendous talent evaluator.

One final word about Steinburg. He may have been the best pure talent evaluator the Patriots have ever employed, but he did not understand how the pieces and personalities fit together in a locker room. And because of that, the Pats of his time were a collection of players as opposed to a collection of team mates. Regardless of how cold and impersonal professional football seems, BB and Parcells could take a group of guys that fit their style, regardless (to a certain extent) of talent level, mold them into a team and win with them. And that is what talent evaluation is really all about.

If you read Michael Holley's book, you'll note that Belichick would have benched Bledsoe for Brady later that season anyway. Regardless, to win three Super Bowls (the first with a pretty average team and the others will injuries throughout the roster) is pretty impressive for any coach.

That mid-70's group was a great team, all put together by Fairbanks. Take away the Dreith call and the Stingley tragedy, and they might have won multiple Super Bowls.

Parcells did a great job when we needed it, but Fairbanks accomplished more in my opinion.

Actually I had a ton of respect fo MacPherson as a college coach. I have a tough time blaming him for the failings of a talentless team.

I thought Carroll was a wreck though - I'll never forget how even Bledsoe looked him squarely in the eye and ignored his plea for a timeout from the sidelines - and then threw a game winning TD pass. It was all over for him then.

I also remember his comment as a Jets coach, when he said "If we only had another 5 minutes in the game, we would have won" - Um, Pete - try some clock management in the future, rather than wishing for extra time in regulation...

Not to mention the time he didn't have his team prepared for Marino's fake spike - all those and more are just embarrassments.

He needs to stay in college for the rest of his career. Pro Players will never listen to him.
