At first glance I'd say losing the SB. Then looking back, I would have rather lost to Chicago than let Indy get their grubby hands on the Lombardi.

Well, the poll results are dead on even if the responses are not. We're accustomed to 'winning it all' and tend to measure the Patriot's success against that yardstick, but I can remember games that did not matter. There is NO DOUBT that not being competitive is the WORST. Raise a glass to the home team this weekend -- they have kept us 'in the game' for the better part of a decade and there is NOTHING better than being in the game!

No question in my mind. Having lived in New England and watching the Patriots over the years from rise with Parcells to the disaster of Carrol to the glory days of Belichik, I have to say losing to a hated rival, in particular the Colts is the worst. And here are a few reasons why:

• Beat the Colts and you shut them up probably as close to permanent as could be. Now the mystique is gone.
  
• Beat the Colts and the Superbowl is if not a certainty against the lousy offense of the Bears, pretty darn close.
  
• Beat the hated Colts and Pats get to take out revenge against the ill prepared Bears, sort of a 1985 revenge flipped.
  
• Inability to get to horse faced Manning was a tough to watch
  
• Opportunity was there, Caldwell with as big of a line of site as he has, drops the potential game break with a short clear path to the endzone
  
• After the win against SD, after the 1st half against the Colts, if you were a real Pats fan you felt cautious but silently your expectations and confidence were high. It really suck to see them lose.
  
• Finally my job transfered me to Indiana and now I am surrounded by a sea of Colts fans with their stupid blue wigs and stuff. To make it worse they boast like its going out of style

IMO not being compettive and not being in contention are 2 different things

Not being competitive would mean you are getting blown out or losing by 10 or more points just about every game or two

Not in contention may mean you have played alot of close games but just came out on the wrong side of the score in a few or more which makes it a bit frustrating,I think there were a few teams last year like Tennessee that would have won 3 or more games than they did but lost those close games all year.

Now that I have that out of the way, to me the reason the AFC Championship game loss really sucked wasn't so much who we lost to (although that was definitely part of why it sucked), but more the way we lost. Blowing a big lead, 15 guys having the flu, starting guys who hadn't started all year, playing guys on defense who hadn't played since preseason, etc. It really left me feeling "if ONLY (fill in highly unlikely and very unlucky scenario here) hadn't happened, we would be hoisting Lombardi #4. Instead we're watching the hated rival Colts hoist it."

Being out of contention in December, thats an easy one. You get all jacked up for the season to come around and your team is mediocre and you don't get to enjoy the season but wonder who you are picking in the 1st round of the draft when December comes around? That is awful.

I'm a transplanted hoosier living in Mass... We should compare notes. I have to say I might be the only person who likes both the Pats and the Colts, although my like of the Pats is more begrudging admiration for they way they play and handle themselves than truly being a "fan" I do root for the sox though.

losing the afc championship game to indy sucked, but winning the division and a couple playoff games was a lot of fun. advancing beyond other teams is inherently better, and provides more hope for the following season.

I might be able to understand the lament of getting close just to have it taken away if we were talking about something important and life altering here, but we're talking about sports. enjoy the good, deal with the bad, and look forward to next year.

This question varies from differnet fan bases. We've missed the playoffs 5 straight years, the past 3 years, we were done by Christmas. It sucks playing games that are some what meaningless. I still don't call any game completely meaningless because the best cure is winning football games, but in terms of the standings, they're meaningless.

Losing the AFCCG to the Colts had to be the most devastating moment I have seen in the BB/Brady era. Losing in the SB is a horrible feeling but I dunno...I've cried twice before...one was when we lost to the Donkeys in the playoffs. But losing to the Colts in the AFCCG was heart breaking. We had that game in our hands. I was so pumped at half time. The team got bashed during the offseason and we had an oppurtunity to shock everybody and we just came short by a first down. Ugh...cant think of much worse things than that.

You should be used to being out of contention by late December,Your team sucks and is a walkover as usual once december arrives as they have been most of the past decade or so.
