• Room to work: With the free-agent class down to the bottom of the barrel, and plenty of rookies still left to sign, most teams remain in relatively good salary-cap shape. The average cap room per team leaguewide, as of Thursday, was $9.82 million. Fourteen franchises, nearly half the teams in the league, still have more than $10 million in salary-cap space. Seven teams have more than $15 million in available spending room and three teams have $20 million or more. Here's how the teams stack up in terms of cap room:

The numbers may be a little off since Mike Reiss reported on June 27nd that the Patriots were around $7.1 million under the cap. But the Pats seem to be in good shape especially since Merriweather is the only 1st day draftchoice they need to sign.

The Steelers on the other hand have yet to sign 5 rookies including their top 3 choices Lawrence Timmons (1st round), LaMarr Woodley (2nd) and Matt Spaeth (3rd). Detroit haven´t signed CJ yet. It will be interesting to see if some of the teams at the bottom will have to redo some contracts in order to sign their draftchoices. I guess Manning will have to reconstruct his again.

Manning already did restructure this year. Their cap contains like 10M for Freeny under the franchise tag. If they get him into a long term deal, they should gain 3 - 4 mil more.

Mike was allowing for the signing of the draft choices when he reported the Pat's cap position to be around $7.1M.

"Accounting for Asante Samuel's $7.79 million salary cap charge as a franchise player, as well as the money allocated to sign their nine draft choices, the Patriots have approximately $7.1 million of space. So salary cap space is not an issue for the club.

The Colts have yet to release Corey Simon. When they do they will free up almost $4M in 2007 cap space via salary relief, though adding a substantial dead cap hit for 2008. The Colts had the last pick in the first and no second, as well.
