According to a pro scout who has watched Moss extensively throughout his career, one of his greatest attributes also ranks among his least publicized - his ability to read defenses.

“It’s kind of interesting, because I hear people say he doesn’t know how to run routes and all this other stuff,” said the scout, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “But he’s one of the few guys I know of in this league who when defenses line up, he knows what coverage it is.”
-----
“Watch out,” the scout said. “If the guy sitting next to him in the locker room is the guy I think it is, then Randy’s probably going to get a lot of opportunities and things will be good.”

That's good to hear. I always figured the "Randy Moss can only run deep routes" stuff was just typical regurgitation. One of those things people say b/c they heard it but they have no idea if it's actually true.

Who is Moss' locker buddy [that he's referring to]?

sounds good. I can't wait to see Moss catch a Brady bomb.

That would be Tom Brady.

The report also mentions that Moss' body language out of the huddle often indicates if the ball is coming to him (he runs out of the fuddle when he's getting the ball, slacks when he's not). Better fix that one up before the season starts, Randy!

Given our offense, and Brady's propensity to go through his reads and spread the ball, maybe that won't be a problem here. There will be no Randy ratio here.

History favors Thomas: Ex-Ravens get a bad rap

An examination of Ravens free agent departures over the last five years shows for sure a number of players that flamed out - with linebacker Edgerton Hartwell spectacularly topping the list - but even more who went on to equal or better their performances.

Those kind of players gave the Ravens a reputation that, based on the big picture, shouldn’t pose any worry for Thomas and the Patriots this season.

Sorry, I find it hard to believe only a few receivers can read the defensive coverage and that he's one of that elite group.

Still looking forward to seeing what he can do........

I don't know why you'd say that. Try tallying up the number of starting QB's in the league who can't read defenses, some of whom are touted as elite because of arm strength or foot speed or pedigree when at the end of the day all that really matters is they are slow/poor decision makers who hold onto the ball too long as a result. Randy's played with a couple of them (including a league co-MVP). Hasn't ever played with a QB who was even remotely adept at reading coverage. Now he's going to play with a guy whose forte is just that.

Given time on tape they can all read defenses. It's apparently a lot rarer that a guy can actually translate that to a functional skill at NFL game speed.

I find it interesting that they mention Tommy Polley as a Ravens player who left when Polley was signed by the Ravens from the Rams. So he really shouldn't even be mentioned, honestly.

However, I agree with the rest of the premise of the article. That, like many stereotypes about players (Receivers from Florida, RBs from Pitt), the idea that the players from the Ravens don't succeed when they leave is another one that is blown out of proportion.

In my mind, that doesn't mean "run out of the huddle every time", that means "learn to mix things up*, to confuse the D even more." :)

*i.e., run sometimes even when you're not getting the ball, and slack sometimes even when you are

"You know who may end up being the winner is the New England Patriots," Collinsworth said. "Which somehow they always seem to do. ... Now you're going to add Randy Moss and these other receivers to the one glaring weak spot on that football team; they're absolutely loaded. It's just hard to imagine a scenario where they're not in real contention at the end of the year."

Like Collinsworth, Theismann said he believes the Patriots should be a much better fit for Moss, who was acquired for the bargain-basement price of a fourth-round draft choice after posting a career-low 42 receptions last season for an Oakland team that went 6-26 during his two years there.

He's tremendously gifted physically. Part of reading defenses is studying a lot.

I believe he has succeeded based on physical ability. Guys like Brown and Welker don't have that height and speed.

There are tons of players who have stuck based on hard work and intelligence.

Enough that I believe Moss is not "one of the few guys I know of in this league who when defenses line up, he knows what coverage it is.”

He doesn't need to be to survive and he's given no indication of being tremendously cerebral or doing extra homework.

No one knows for sure, I'm just saying it sounds like hyperbole to me.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy as hell if he's great at reading defenses. Why not!

its late june hyperbole is all you get but come on it is nice to hear things like this it dont mean sh** but I say Beleive Moss will be great until he's not because his play has earned that

You didn't check my next post. I also heard he blocks like John Hannah and Makes Jerry Rice's route running look sloppy.

He's unbelievable, I can't wait!:D
