I want to start following College football next season and need a team to follow. Do I go for one with a cat nickname, a Catholic one as a sop to half my heritage (being of Irish descent), one that wears the colour red....? I started following the Pats because they wore a red uniform and because of the name. So, pitch your alma mater to me. All suggestions welcome. :D
BTW, Miss Gcat wants to know if there are any Jewish ones.

The Belichick Light teams.

Alabama with Saban.
Notre Dame with Weiss.
Florida with Meyer.

They're my teams.

Wolverines!

Don't fall under the trap of supporting precious Michigan or OSU. You want a true blue collar and clean program with a world class coach. That college and coach is Penn State with Joe Paterno.

As an example of how old school Joe is: This summer there was a confrontation in the street where some kid got in a player's gf's face and pushed her to the ground. So then the football player grabbed three teammates and followed the kid to a party where there was a fight. No serious injuries but certainly not something you should brag about. After hearing of this Joe Paterno as punishment has decided that all players, coaches, and staff will be responsible for cleaning up Beaver Stadium Sun mornings after games including himself as he saw it as reflection of a team problem of discipline. This duty is usually reserved for clubs who get paid $500 to help fund their activities. Joe has said that all $ will still go to the clubs who were signed up for the activity however they need not show as his team will handle the work. Also as a side note, the 4 players involved, 2 are suspended for the year and 2 are suspended for 4 games.

That my friends is why PSU to me is the greatest program in College Football. A hardnosed coach who btw has the highest graduation rate among players in the Big 10 (tied with Northwestern). We may not win as much as we used to but we have never been prouder.

Boston College sounds like your best choice.

Virginia Tech Hokies. A strong blue-collar team that values strong defense & special teams. We lead the NCAA in non-offensive touchdowns in the last 10 years.

And ESPN GameDay is down in Blacksburg the first week of the season.

From ESPN GameDay crew :
"After [the 1999 visits to Virginia Tech], our little traveling circus was never the same. The ante had been upped for every other school. Virginia Tech set the standard. We really have savored each visit since."

You should root for the DAWGS!!

The Univeristy of Georgia has an excellent football program, you might be familiar with a few of their alumni:

Richard Seymour
Ben Watson
Patrick Pass

Georgia is now one of the top 5 colleges represented on current NFL rosters

other notable Dawgs:
Terrel Davis
Hines Ward
Randy McMichael
and of course, Herchel Walker

Plus their team mascot is UGA!
uga.jpg

He lives here in Savannah, the current UGA is UGA VI, and he is an English Bulldog, get English.

I'm stuck rooting for my alma mata, Syracuse, and they suck, so don't pick them.

Georgia's biggest rival is Florida, they play every year in Alltell Stadium in Jacksonville (home of the Jags) and it is billed as "The world's largest outdoor ****tail party".

University of Vermont!

Go Cats Go!

(ps--Hebrew College?)

(pps--USC if you have fond memories of getting jacked and pumped)

(ppps--if you like the coaching tree theory--Fresno State--Pat Hill or U of Iowa--Kirk Ferentz)

You could do worse that going with one of the true originals, the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers.

Other recommendations, based on your criteria, that haven't been mentioned yet. I'm only adding teams that you have a chance of seeing on television, though:
Clemson Tigers
Auburn Tigers
LSU Tigers
Wisconsin Badgers
Louisville Cardinals
Pittsburgh Panthers
Arizona Wildcats
Maryland Terrapins
Nebraska Cornhuskers
Oklahoma Sooners
Washington State Cougars (Red AND Cat, and the Alma Mater of Bledsoe)
and of course, the South Carolina Cannot be mentioned on this site.

If you're an Ullsterman, the Syracuse Orangemen are the logical choice, although they are definitely in a down cycle now.

I like Florida because Belichick is good friends with Meyer (and Donovan) and I like the way they play. Plus we have many Florida WRs. ;)

Notre Dame with Weiss.

I don't like ND because I like Purdue, lol.

But i like SEC teams like LSU because in my opinion, the SEC is the best conference, like the most talent.

I liked ND because of Charlie but they were just so damn overrated. They were surrounded by so much hype but got embarrassed by every decent team they faced.

Nebraska!:rocker: My mom's side of the family is from there so I grew up vacationing out there watching them practice (in August) during the Irving Fryar days!

You like red?:D

There's only one college team you can support Gomez and you know who it is....

Choose an SEC school. Most of the other conferences are just jokes or shells of their former selves. And don't pick georgia, they have been The gators Biznitches for the last few years...

I like the Georgia pick, for big schools. They're competitive in an elite conference, but not dominant (right now). Should provide lots of tension, close games, reason to be involved, etc...Plus, every once in a while they are National Championship contenders. Always have lots of future pros, which is fun to see, too.

Washington Huskies! :D

Once a proud program, the Huskies have stepped back a bit and are losing solid Washington recruits to California schools and ever the Oregon schools. Ty Willingham is working to get this rich program back to the prominice it once had and with freshman quarterback Jake Locker on the roster, they're on their way. :D

Plus, they're the best deal in the country. Always rival the Ivies in research grants, yet the in-state tuition is ~ 1/4 of room & board fees for a NE school.
