I read this and I was left scratching my head a bit. Wasn't Dykes the guy who was SHOT in his backyard in Texas (or wherever) while he was "rehabbing" from an injury? Also, he was in a bar-room brawl with Irving Fryar that injured his eye and landed him on the Reserve/ NFI list and I understand that his eye never fully healed.

Anyone remember more about this?

He played like 26 games and never went back after the bar room brawl that he and Irving were involved in..ESPN has an interesting take on the sitz.. These guys think it is difficult to get a disability settlement, it happens in all industries and government, do they really think that the NFLPA and the NFL are just going to give them money because they played football. Insurance companies are in the business to make money, not give it away for every claim. Unions traditionally do not represent retired players, so why should the NFL be any different, tired of all of the whining about this whole situation.. stop living the high life, invest and then most can live well.

Being a fan of the '90 Pats was truly a surreal experience. Not only were they really, really bad on the gridiron (and they were), but it was also the year for horrible escapades off the field.

What a circus! ... Sexual harassment charges were brought against three players by a female reporter. There was a bar room brawl between Irving Fryar and Hart Lee Dykes (their No. 1 pick a couple of years before) resulting in an eye injury that would eventually end Dykes' career. The last game of the season was a home game against the Giants ... knowing no local fans would go to the game, the Patriots promoted the game in the New York area instead. It resulted in their best attendance figures of the year, but everyone was a Giants fan so it felt like an away game in Foxboro.

The team set record attendance lows, plus the media was hoping the team would move to St. Louis so a new expansion team could take their place. I was the only Patriots fan around -- and I lived in New England!

Heartless Dykes, brings back really bad memories. He and Fryar were such disappointments. Great physical talent but no character or head for the game and injury prone (Dykes) as well.

Not that it reminds me of any recent Pats wideout, no siree.

I didn't know that having your head up your ***** was a football injury.

As for that 1990 season, was that the year where fans started showing up to games with bags on their heads so their faces wouldn't be seen on TV?

You know, I'd completely forgotten about the barroom incident. I always remembered Dykes as the hard luck guy who broke his patella a couple of times. I guess there are aspects of making your own luck. Strange how Fryar was such a questionable character guy (didn't he sever a tendon when his wife cut him with a knife during a domestic dispute?) who turned his life around. Once he left Foxboro, of course.

The '90's are why I love this team so much now: after years of hoping for a .500 record and a smidgen of dignity, the Pats have become the benchmark for the rest of the league. Who knew?

Fryar began to turn around his life the year before Parcells arrived. Unfortunately, the Tuna traded him to Miami before he played one regular-season game for the new HC. Terrible trade.

As for Hart Less Dykes, screw him. He gave nothing, so he should get nothing. Of all the former players from whom to hear, an underacheiving, undisciplined, diva WR is at the bottom of my list. I feel infinitely more sympathy for former Olinemen, FBacks, DLinemen and ILBs.

I remember watching him play with a cast on his arm.

Thank God those days are over.

SO few games...and I tend to agree..a diva who did nothing here and now wants money..I agree with some disabilities over time but..really he is stretching it...

Re: Hart Lee Dykes... Disabled due to Football injury????

the bar room brawl that he and Irving were involved in

If Hart Lee got into a bar room fight with the Pat's current CB named Randall, the headline possibilities would be hysterical.

I always thought his career was ended by knee injuries. That guy had a ton of talent but couldn't stay healthy. That was too bad. I always liked the guy and his few flashes of talent were great to watch on an otherwise "disappointing" team. Part of the problem back in the day was the lack of a QB and a lack of coaching too. Can't blame the players for that.

I hope he can get something for his time in the league. Hey a man's got to feed his family.

A guy I went to high school with from Tiverton, RI, was the guy who got into the fight with Fryar and Dykes in a club in Providence. He was on crutches at the time and used them as a weapon. He was a big, mean, tough guy....and he was my friend.

Dykes = the only guy who'd tear an ACL and be lost for the season for having a bowel movement on the sidelines

I'd be careful to label Fryar a "disappointment". I saw him play many many times and the guy had skills, was tough and played hard. He played on BAD TEAMS and that might have played a role in his numbers with the Patriots but take a minute to see where he ranks all time: ( Reference: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/misc/leaderindex.htm )

Receptions: 10th (ahead of Lofton, Ellard,Sharpe,Irvin, etc. )

Receiving TD's: 13th (ahead of Mark Clayton, Andre Rison, Fred Belitnikoff, Harold Carmichael, etc)

Receiving yards: 10th (ahead of HOF'er Michael Irvin, Charlie Joiner,Art Monk and other notables)

Granted longevity played a roll in Irving reaching the top 10 in 2 out of 3 of the most important WR categories, but many of the other notable names on those lists also play well into their 30's. Did he have some off the field issues (early in his career)? Yes. But I think only New England fans would look back on him as having been a problem in any way, and not all of us think he was a head case...some of us think he was one of the top 5 WR's to ever play for the Patriots, including me.

To me, Irving Fryar is one of the most under-rated WR's to play in the last 25 years.

Re: Hart Lee Dykes... Disabled due to Football injury????

I had forgotten about the fight. I do remember Dykes had a congenital problem with one of his knees. The patela, knee cap was egg-shell thin and he broke it,it was a problem that couldn't be corrected. But to say getting into a fight with a team mate is a football injury is pathetic,he must realy be bad off money wise.

Interesting: of the 8 doctors seen by Dykes, 3 declared him disabled. Which means 5 said he wasn't. In the legal arena, this is called doctor shopping.

On the other hand, watching Dykes try to catch the football with hand motions similar to the odd flutter of stoke victims--maybe Dykes was disabled the day he was drafted.
