The Colts spent just what the league will pay for the rings, $5000. Robert Kraft paid the difference ( amount over $5K) for the Patriots rings and gave the same ring to every member of the organization. Irsay gave the tier one rings to the players and lesser rings ( tier 2 and tier 3- which he called class rings) to other members of the organization. FYI... Then again, it is the Irsays.....

Colts rings cost $5,000 and less for scaled down versions given to other organization members.....

>>>>>The team did not release a list of ring recipients, but all 53 players who were on the active roster for the Super Bowl, along with the
eight-man practice squad and players on the injured reserve list, received the deluxe, "first-tier" ring.
It's priced at approximately $5,000, the maximum allowed by the NFL for Super Bowl rings. Top executives and
other team officials also received that ring.

Some employees were given a second-tier ring, a scaled-down version of the original priced between $1,500
and $2,000, while others received a third-tier ring that, according to Irsay, "is more like a class ring."

Compare that to....

Pats rings were valued at $15,000+
>>>>Each 14-karat white gold ring has 124 diamonds with a carat total of 4.94, but the team did not disclose the rings' value. Each one weighs a quarter ounce more than
last year's rings, which the club said were worth more than $15,000 each.

league regulations on Super bowl rings.....

At least they got rings I guess but the tiered system sounds kind of cheap and cheesy.

Ha ha, I like the phrasing they used compared to your correct statement before it. "the maximum allowed" :D

It's not cheap, it is understated.

I wonder if Corey Simon will get a ring. Maybe they will offer it to him in lue of payment of his salary.

I stand corrected. I was under the impression that Kraft paid the amount over the $5000 but it seems like the ring companies get the contract and may lose money on the deal?????? I agree the tiering is pretty cheap and a class ring for a Super Bowl victory.....!!!!

. As a result, the ring companies are footing the rest of the bill after the NFL's initial $5,000 offering. The recipients of these super-rings don't seem to mind.

Nope...

Here's another sign DT Corey Simon won't be back with the Colts: He was persona non grata at the team's Super Bowl ring ceremony last week. The relationship between player and organization became contentious last year after Simon had knee surgery in the preseason and was inactive for the first four games. The Colts then placed him on the nonfootball injury list for the remainder of the season and withheld $1.9 million of his salary. . .

The Patriots did a tiered system too. I think they only had two tiers though. They had the big ring for players and key personnel and a less expensive ring for office staff. But I think the second tiered ring was almost as much as what they are spending on the rings for the players.

I didn't know that. Not to backtrack ;) but the reference to the bottom tier as "more like a class ring" was what made me laugh - maybe he just had a bad choice of words.

Of course they did. Cheap bastards. That feels beeter to get that out.

This is getting more complicated than it needs to be. How much each ring costs makes little difference. It needs to be put to the Putin Test. If the guy pockets it, then it's a good ring. If not, then it's Cracker Jack bauble.

I guess the league went cheap. If they mandate that teams can only spend $5000 now.

not true. That's just what the Colts said because they didn't want to look cheap. The league only provides 5K but it doesn't say you can't spend more. They just won't pay the extra. The only max is the losing ring that can't be more than half of that 5k or 2500.

If you look at the gray inset to the right, you'll see what the league says about the rings

"Cost of Super Bowl rings: League pays for up to 150 rings at $5,000 per ring (plus adjustments for increases in gold and diamonds). League also pays for 150 pieces of jewelry for the losing team, which may not cost more than one-half the price set for the Super Bowl ring."

Its not a bad looking ring for 5k.

Maybe it's some sort of midwest thang? Sounds cheap to me.

My understanding is that the league kicks in $5,000 for some kind of "trophy" for the players. Since 320 pound NFL guys would look silly carrying little trophies, they do rings.

My understanding also is that the owner can pay whatever he wants above the $5,000, a la Kraft. The ring manufacturer probably prices them close to cost just to have the prestige of making the ring.

I believe the "two-tier" system the Patriots used for rings after the 2001 championship was 1 ring for the guys and another (smaller) ring for the girls. Apart from that, there was no difference.

I also don't believe for a second that the ring companies are only getting $5,000 for rings which cost a lot more than that. The article is simply wrong. It's been widely reported that the Krafts paid the difference.

I have never before been infuriated by a ring. But this one really upsets me.

Agreed.

Makes me want to get up and punch a baby.
And i love children.

You tell em' evil baby. You tell em.

OK, so what were those pins us season ticket holders received after SB XXXVI? Tenth-tier? :D

That's what I thought and what was widely reported. I thought it cost Kraft about $1 million for the rings when it was all added up. IIRC Patriot Reign detailed how even midlevel eemployees got the ring and how proud they were to show it off.........
As opposed to the Colts tier 3 ring .....
