Did the Colts go cheap on Super Bowl Rings?

The Colts spent just what the league will pay for the rings, $5000. Robert Kraft paid the difference ( amount over $5K) for the Patriots rings and gave the same ring to every member of the organization. Irsay gave the tier one rings to the players and lesser rings ( tier 2 and tier 3- which he called class rings) to other members of the organization. FYI... Then again, it is the Irsays.....

I stand corrected. I was under the impression that Kraft paid the amount over the $5000 but it seems like the ring companies get the contract and may lose money on the deal?????? I agree the tiering is pretty cheap and a class ring for a Super Bowl victory.....!!!!

Here's another sign DT Corey Simon won't be back with the Colts: He was persona non grata at the team's Super Bowl ring ceremony last week. The relationship between player and organization became contentious last year after Simon had knee surgery in the preseason and was inactive for the first four games. The Colts then placed him on the nonfootball injury list for the remainder of the season and withheld $1.9 million of his salary. . .

The Patriots did a tiered system too. I think they only had two tiers though. They had the big ring for players and key personnel and a less expensive ring for office staff. But I think the second tiered ring was almost as much as what they are spending on the rings for the players.

I didn't know that. Not to backtrack but the reference to the bottom tier as "more like a class ring" was what made me laugh - maybe he just had a bad choice of words.

This is getting more complicated than it needs to be. How much each ring costs makes little difference. It needs to be put to the Putin Test. If the guy pockets it, then it's a good ring. If not, then it's Cracker Jack bauble.

not true. That's just what the Colts said because they didn't want to look cheap. The league only provides 5K but it doesn't say you can't spend more. They just won't pay the extra. The only max is the losing ring that can't be more than half of that 5k or 2500.

Maybe it's some sort of midwest thang? Sounds cheap to me.

My understanding is that the league kicks in $5,000 for some kind of "trophy" for the players. Since 320 pound NFL guys would look silly carrying little trophies, they do rings.

My understanding also is that the owner can pay whatever he wants above the $5,000, a la Kraft. The ring manufacturer probably prices them close to cost just to have the prestige of making the ring.

That's what I thought and what was widely reported. I thought it cost Kraft about $1 million for the rings when it was all added up. IIRC Patriot Reign detailed how even midlevel eemployees got the ring and how proud they were to show it off.........
