No mention of Moss :wha: That's a first...

this guy is seriously hating on Oldenburg

Apparently Scott Wright doesn't take into consideration that on a Super Bowl worthy team, there shouldn't be room for 8 or 9 rookies on the 53.

He also seems to call teams on the carpet for drafting a guy who projects to a backup.......in the 5th round or later. Honestly, how many teams think they're drafting starters that late in the draft?

Curious way of ranking drafts.

He may well be right about the ranking of our Day Two guys, I think the point is that there weren't other players there we liked more so we drafted the ones we wanted to make sure we get to take a good look at.

Rank the draft how you want, but it really pisses me off when someone says the Patriots "threw away draft picks" or whatever. That is just stupid and ridiculous.

You may not agree with or understand their picks, but if you don't think the Patriots did what they thought was the best thing to do with those picks then you need to get a clue. Suggesting that they just threw away the picks for the fun of it is asinine to put it kindly.

Before we apologize for the Pats' draft, let's see how many choices

make the team. I dare say the Pats' scouting staff can rate players

better than Scott Wright. Scott is ticked off because the Pats don't

agree with his rankings. I'm sure that a lot of thought went into every

selection. Most of these players had some contact with the Pats before

the draft.

The problem that I have with Mr. Wright's analysis of the Pats draft is that he puts HIS bias of the players on to how the Pats evaluated the players. What Mr. Wright clearly doesn't understand is that the Patriots use their own scouts for evaluations. Scouts who have produced the likes of Stephen Neal, Dan Koppen, Logan Mankins, Nick Kaczur and Ryan O'Callaghan for the O-line. So, his questioning of Oldenburg and Elgin leaves something to be desired. Especially since Elgin wowed the team at mini-camp with his technique and power.

Mr. Wright's evaluation of Lua and Rogers is somewhat lacking. He downplays how good Ray Maualuga is and the fact that Maualuga projects as a mid 1st round pick next year. I don't believe its a bad thing to lose your starting position due to injury to a player as good as Maualuga projects. Also, many people were amazed at how well Lua played when he was in the line-up. He didn't make them forget Lofa Tatupu, but he also didn't make them want for his return either.

As for Rogers, yes, he was a 4-3 DE in college. However, he did spend time without his hand in the dirt and actually PREFERRED to not line up in a 3 point stance. I think its shallow of Wright to question Rogers talent without mentioning that Rogers is the perfect size for a Pats LB at 6'2 and 252 lbs. What is interesting is that Rogers is mentioned as being game quick, more than testing quick.

Like others have mentioned, Mr. Wright seems to ive no credit for the Pats acquiring Wes Welker OR Randy Moss. And those two players boost this draft tremendously.

And, like others have mentioned, there just aren't that many positions available on this team. And very few people expect to find starters beyond the 4th round. Most teams project those players as back-ups and are pleasantly surprised when they get starters, ala Brady, Thomas, Terrell Davis, etc.

You guys are being overly sensative. I think it was a fair grade. None of us, if we are being completely honest, believe that ANY of the second day picks has any chance of making an impact on this team within the next 2 years. Also it should be very surprising if more than 5 guys selected in this draft actually make the 53 man roster in September. I might have been the first time in draft history when a large number of a teams late choices were drafted with the specific intention of having these guys make up the practise squad.

I'd probably have given us a grade closer to a B- because of the Moss trade and the 2 future picks we gained, but IMHO he wasn't far off the mark with this description of the Pats 2nd day picks.

But who could we have possibly drafted in rounds 5-7 who would have a chance to impact this team within the next two years? Did we leave a sure thing on the board in order to draft projects? Essentially, he's penalizing the Patriots, and maybe other good teams, for being good and not having 10 jobs available for rookies.

We didn't draft his best player available so we got a low grade. If we drafted hb blades and brandon siler in the late rounds we would have gotten a B.

Sorry, PFK, but I believe that Elgin, Oldenburg, Rogers and Lua could all have an impact as early as this year. The RT position is NOT set by any stretch of the imagination. Oldenburg has as much shot at it as Kaczur, O'Callaghan or Britt. None of those three have CLEARLY won the position. As for Rogers and Lua, I see them as making an impact on special teams. I don't believe Mays is going to stick around, honestly. I've said it several times that he reminds me of Dexter "I'm a penalty waiting to happen" Reid.

Rogers and Lua may not make a significant impact on REGULAR play, but you don't expect that out of 5th and 6th round players. Not immediately. So, you are basically proving OUR point and taking away from Scott Wright's point. He DINGS the Patriots because they chose players based on THEIR scouting and not his.

Don't forget Richardson. Reiss says keep an eye out for him and with the current sitution with Samuel, that's probably good advice.

I wasn't bothered by the write-up OR the grade (just his opinion) - I just found the write-up and grade to be incongruous. Just from the write-up it sounded like he was leaning toward a B-minus/C+ kind of grade. Anyway, interesting read, but ultimately, who cares?

This is the most accurate post in the bunch.

BTW- DaBruinz, you lips to god's ear. I hope you are right, but right now I'm not holding my breath on any of them...maybe with the exception of Lua.

I think that all the second day picks are a stretch to make the 53 but that's true of every good team as has been pointed out. On the other hand, I think that all these picks have significant potential and 2 or 3 of them could surprise us next year after a year on the PS building up their bodies and minds to true NFL level. For example, Oldenburg has been playing OT for 2 years, he was a tight end before that. There's a certain guy named Peters up in Buffalo whose career followed a similar arc. Hairston and Elgin are also guys with significant potential. Given the depth situation, Richardson and Lua stand the best chance to make the 53. The secondary is old and creaky and Lua may be good enough to beat out Mays and Woods.

Just being picky, but Lua would take Mays' place at MLB, not Woods' at OLB. As for the rest of your post, :agree:

PFK - Its why I said they COULD have an impact.

Elgin - I think he wouldn't make it to the PS. I think that other teams (Denver) were hoping he'd go undrafted. I think that Elgin would be a great C/G player and he's supposedly way ahead of the others

Oldenburg - I give him a leg up on Hillard after Hillard's "Puke and take a knee" display at mini-camp. With the ORT spot STILL not settled, Oldenburg has as much chance to come in and take the spot as Kaczur and O'Callaghan.

Lua - I would be massively surprised if Lua couldn't come in and play better than Corey "I'm a penalty waiting to happen" Mays. Maybe I'm being too critical of Mays, but I can distinctly remember at least 2 LONG run backs that Mays cost Hobbs. And he may have had one or two for Maroney as well.

Rogers - Rumors of where this kid is destined to play were RAMPANT immediately after the draft. Rumors were out that this kid was going to end up at ILB ala Bruschi, after a stint at OLB. That could still happen as he took snaps at camps at the OLB spot. He's a long shot, but if he shows the hardwork the Pats look for, they'll be hard-pressed to cut him. He's also a natural team leader....

Hairston - A player I didn't mention. Probably destined for the practice squad, but could end up being a 5th RB on this team. The Pats went short in 2005 and it killed them. Even last year, with 4 (including Evans) they ended up with Evans attempting to be the GOTO man in a critical situation. (I still can't understand why the Pats didn't think that killing time off the clock with 4:39 seconds left wasn't the way to go. At the very least, they could have set up 3rd and 5 from the Colts 24. But, alas... )

Just a point of information. Oldenburg played 3 years at LOT for Colorado, totalling 34 starts. He red-shirted as a freshman. Then missed all but 2 games in his 2nd year. From his 3rd year, on, he played LOT. He missed 1 game in 2004 due to a neck stinger.

I always get a kick when people call the Pats secondary "Old and creaky".

James Sanders, Eugene Wilson, Ellis Hobbs, Asante Samuel, Antwann Spann, Willie Andrews. All are 26 or younger. Yes, they have some cagey vets like Harrison, Hawkins, Chad Scott, and Tory James. But, when you figure in Meriweather and Richardson, this secondary has a good chance to be pretty young.

I think that Hawkins and Chad Scott are probably on the outside looking in right now, though Spann and Willie Andrews have PS eligibility left.

The following are the special teams tackles for some players. Willie Andrews had 10 tackles and 7 assists in 18 games. Larry Izzo had 14 tackles and 5 assists in 19 games. Don Davis had 6 solo and 3 asts in 6 games. Pierre Woods had 15 tackles, 0 assists in 8 games . Hawkins had 13 tackles and 2 assists in 19 games. Spann had 5 tackles and 3 assists in 8 games. Corey Mays had 6 tackles and 2 assists in 8 games.

All game numbers include the play-offs.
