Moss in no win situation?...

I read this on SI, Dr. Z's mailbag, and was thinking he may have a point.

If Moss tanks, it will be "I told you so" from the press. If he does well, the reports will be "He only tries hard for a winning team".

I have to agree, there will be certain national and New England based reporters that will try and spin it bad no matter how Moss does.

I think the majority of the Moss supporters on this board feel that way. That has been the main supporting argument (along with locker room leadership) for why many think he will succeed here.

The guy is a competitor that hates losing, but unlike Rodney he won't give it everything he has in a game or season that goes into the pooper.

I don't think that is spinning it or being negative in anyway, because it is what it is.

If Moss listens to writers he is an idiot. It's always a no win situation when you pay attention to writers and talk show callers. Just ask Don Zimmer.

If Moss performs well and becomes an important contributor on a Super Bowl Championship team, neither he nor any of his teammates are going to care how some in the national media spin it.

Moss is going to have a great season and will make the Raiders and Vikings look bad for not giving him a legitimate QB to play with during his career. At the end of the season, he'll find himself with a lot of teams willing to give a 'rehabilitated' Randy Moss a huge contract.

With his history that's a fair wrap. However if he produces & significantly helps the Pat's win a Super Bowl then it will balance out in the long run & he will go to the Hall of Fame.

Especailly if he a has a big AFC Championship Game or Super Bowl.

Of course it will. The NFL HOF isn't as sanctimonious as the MLB HOF. He'll get in assuming he plays well this year and if he wins a ring, he'll be a lock.

Yup - that about covers it. Case in point the initial media coverage from minicamp... although some writers noted the glimpses of brilliance others seemed to suggest that Moss didn't dominate.

Of course, if he goes out there and shows off, the same writers will likely chastize him for being a showoff.

Generally my take on what's happening is that Moss is trying to keep his head down, and just fit in... just being "another guy" in camp regardless of the media attention.

Moss hasn't changed - he's still all about the money... but I think he knows the only way the money will come is by winning a SB - and the only way a SB will come is by being a team player.

Frankly I don't care what his motivation is, as long as its directed towards winning.

He's correct. Moss is in a no-win situation with the press. Which means exactly ****.

One thing that's different about the NE fan base is we've seen the press be wrong, and the organization be right, so regularly that, well, we "drink the kool-aid." Sure, if fans see Moss dogging it, we'll get as upset as any fanbase. But not because we read it in the Globe, while the organization says they are happy with his progress.

Maybe it's just my rose-colored glasses, but I think that mental toughness about the media is another Pats trait he's going to absorb some of through osmosis.

Bruschi is definately right here. Moss is only 30 and is approaching top 10 stats in many WR statistics. Don't compare him to Irvin and his attitude because Moss in hiw prime has been way more prolific, now of course Moss's status relies upon the next few years where he will need to prove to everyone he is not washed up, but if he does so and I suspect he will, he is a shoe in to make the Hall
