Third Year Theory: The concept of a team needing to pass through three levels -- Years -- in order to become Super Bowl champion. It's retrospectively looking over the previous three seasons of a champion, and noticing a trend that suggests that champion started off having a talented team that hasn't brought it together yet (Year 1) followed by a season where they broke out, and maybe even became the trendy pick for a Super Bowl, but fell short (Year 2) and finally, after facing some adversity during the third season, came together and won it all (Year 3). Year 0 exists for teams that have taken drastic steps back from Year 1, and don't look to bring themselves forward this season.

WTF? Almost every SB champ of the last 10 years came out of nowhere. So Shanahan built the Broncos and won in year 3. **** Vermeil's Rams came out of nowhere. Same with Baltimore. Same with NE. The Bucs in '02 were a good team for years but always underachieved. '03 and '04 Pats were the rebuilt 2002 team. Cowher's Steelers were always good but not great until they got the the two back system in place(accident), Fast Willie and The Bus, and lots of luck(were luckier in 2005 than the Pats were in '01.) The Colts have been built for years but now they win it all.

I would not be surprised to see any team in the playoffs. Actually I know at least one of these teams will make it to the playoffs: Cleveland, Miami, Houston, Oakland, Washington, Detroit, Tampa Bay, or Arizona. Guaranteed.

How about this for a Super Bowl theory:

Win 1 Super Bowl
Skip 1 year
Win 2 Super Bowls
Skip 2 years
Win 3 Super Bowls
etc.

The Patriots of this decade fit it to a T. How could it be wrong??? ;)

BTW, first time poster, but a big fan of the site. Thanks to everyone for all the knowledgeable discussions.

JaredOfNazareth - I will remember your prophecy, for if it comes true, I will be a believer. Until then...

HA HA! You think one of those crappy teams will make the playoffs?

Right because everyone had the Jets, Saints and Ravens making the postseason last year. I'm sure every team that made the playoffs in 2006 will do so again this season. That always happens.

The Saints were actually my #3 team in my offseason rankings. Baltimore was #8. (The Jets were in dead last, but I'm a Pats fan, what can I say?)

I was thinkin the same thing actually. No joke.

Yeah the Jets prognosis last offseason wasn't good. A last place team always surprises. This isn't baseball. I think the 'skins have a good shot. I sooo would love Houston to rough up Indy and that division. Gary Kubiak's offense is legit. Their D has good young guys: DeMeco, Dunta, Mario, and #1 pick Akoye. Hahaha anyway it'll be fun.

some are saying the NFC East will be tough this year (on Pats' sched), but I'm not buying it. What do you all think?

Miami's D will once again give Tommy fits.

Buffalo may have lost or traded some name players, but I think they filled those roles well, I expect them to be a tough game.

The Jest are going to be a handful again, despite a tough schedule, I expect them in contention for a wildcard slot.

Well, aside from the long waits we'll have to suffer through in the 2050s and beyond, sounds good to me. :D

It is nice though that we will repeatedly beat our own record for most consecutive Super Bowl victories.

I'll tell you what, I'm really high on the Dallas defense right now. Wade Phillips' defensive scheme is the perfect for the athletic defensive players they have. Wade's a good coach too. Spencer and Ware will bring the pressure like Merriman and Phillips do for San Diego. The offense...um...meh...uh...
