2008 Dream Draft

If all the stars align, and SF tumbles to 6-10, and the Pats claim a top 10overall pick in the 2008 draft... surveying the current crop of juniors and seniors, who would you want?

Right now I would have to say a Pass Rusher or elite Offensive Tackle prospect, because those are the two positions hardest to fill, after QB. So I would go with DE Derrick Harvey or OT Sam Baker. I'm not sure Calais Campbell fits the scheme due to his size, and I'm not sold on Jake Long as a LT yet.

I have watched Michigan football since I was little, and Jake Long is one of the best tackles to come out of U of M in a long time. If we make the transition to zone blocking, as Michigan recently did, it would be unbelievably stupid not to take him with the highest pick that we can.

Another good prospect is James Laurinaitis at LB. Perhaps not in the first round, but a good second-round prospect.

I would also throw Mario Manningham at WR into the mix if he comes out early. He stretches the field like no college wide receiver I have ever seen. Before his injury last year, he had a three-game stretch of 16 receptions, 381 yards, 6 touchdowns. That's 23.8 YPC, folks.

Unless Laurinaitis has a really bad season or a TON of high level juniors come out, hell be a mid 1st round pick

I like Kenny Phillips with our high 1st round pick unless there is a Champ Bailey caliber Cornerback coming out. Might even see a linebacker with our #32 pick, but don't hold your breath.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but this doesn't seem like the Patriot Way with respect to the draft. What are you suggesting the Pats do?

Most mocks have him gone by the end of the round (though some have him dropping to the Pats with SF's pick in the mid-20s!).

i think Campbell could fit..hes 285ish and 6"8. He can definitley get up near 300 lbs. 3-4 DEs are around 290-300

another name is Glenn Dorsey. hes a DT for LSU..hes 6"2 around 300 lbs. hard worker..terrific player. he could play 3-4 DE maybe

No. Except for ERFA-to-be Mike Wright, the entire 2006 DL is signed through 2008.

I think I phrased myself badly. What I meant is that we could not afford to wait for a player like Jake Long to fall. He is one of my top prospects next year and if he makes it to our position he likely will have slipped. With respect to the Patriots frequent desire to add help in the trenches, as well as the undeniable skill of Jake Long, and also not forgetting the fit within our system, he definitely seems like a Patriots draft pick to me.

Long was one of the best OT's I saw last season. And Lamar Woodley said he is the toughest player he faced in college (on the practice field of course.)

If Long would have come out this year, he might have been the first tackle off the board.

I like his game a lot.

My dream 1st round draft is Goff (provided he runs faster than 4.70) and a lockdown CB. Goff is a true 3-4 MIKE and would allow Thomas to move over and play Bruschi's WILL spot.
I can't see the Samuel problem concluding with a happy ending, I think if a team were to offer BB a first in 2008 for Samuel, he would jump at the chance to sign the trade paperwork.
