Here's a thread to document the atrocities. I'll start with this one, from Draft Dog:

25. New England (from 49ers): Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
2007 Draft Pick: FS Brandon Meriweather
Not huge at 6' 2" 288 pounds, but he plays with excellent leverage and is very strong and quick. Dorsey is an excellent pro prospect and could give New England a pretty good front seven.

WTF? I mean, WTFF?

And San Fran's pick at 25.

That would pretty much be worst case scenario for me.

The latest howler, essentially a variation on the previous one, from DraftAce.com:

16 Patriots (from 49ers) Tyson Jackson Defensive End LSU
The Patriots certainly wouldn't complain if Jackson fell into their lap next April. Essentially he's a more athletic version of Adam Carriker and would be great fit at defensive end in the Patriots 3-4 defense. While Ty Warren has been solid, Jackson and Richard Seymour would give the Pats a scary combo of bookend linemen.

Again, WTF? I mean, WTFF?

I like this thread a lot. It's got legs and will keep us busy for a year.

I tried to find a Pats howler but couldn't. I did find this however, which cheered me up no end. From Walters Football Site

2 Miami Dolphins: Jake Long, OT, Michigan
Miami didn't address the offensive tackle position in April, which is something I think they will regret by Week 8. However, given their drafting habits, they'll probably take a long snapper or something instead.
For the record, the Niners fall to number 19 in this one, where we get Antoine Cason CB Arizona, while the Pats pick at 32. The guy predicts a probably trade but if not says we go for Allen Patrick RB Oklahoma, to "spell for Maroney".

While Ty Warren has been solid

If you define solid as should have made the pro bowl over Seymour. Obviously the guy didn't watch many Pats games.

No one said it had to be a Pats howler. For example (from Walter's Football Site):

92. Indianapolis Colts: Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College
Matt Ryan's the best prospect left on the board, by far. I have a feeling he may go in the first two rounds when all is said and done. However, at this point in time, there aren't many teams that need quarterbacks. That will definitely change once we find out which signal callers are busts. So, why are the Colts taking one? Jim Sorgi won't be with the team much longer - I'm confident someone will sign him to be a starter - so Indianapolis will need a solid backup just in case Peyton Manning gets hurt.

Because, of course, the only thing better than a smurfy WR is a rail-thin QB (Sorgi has three inches on Gostkowski . . . but weighs 20 pounds less).

Sorgi just might be the worst back-up QB in the league, yet someone is going to sign him as a starter?

Whoever does will not have a job for long.

Man, I feel bad, I need to pay attention to college football more, because I only know a few of these guys.

Help me understand how you can make this claim. I mean, honestly. How can you say that Sorgi is the WORST back-up when you have guys like Anthony Wright, REX GROSSMAN, Andrew Walter, Cleo Lemon, etc, etc, in the league?

Another real howler from a contributor at Walter's Football Site:

28. New England Patriots: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

29. Cincinnati Bengals: Keith Rivers, OLB, USC
This is a perfect pick for Cincinnati because the team has a very unstable group of outside linebackers.

30. New England Patriots: Terrell Thomas, CB, USC

31. Dallas Cowboys: Dwight Lowery, CB, San Jose State

32. San Diego Chargers: Jordan Grimes, G, Purdue

Bengals at 29 . . . umm, no.
Cowboys-Chargers Super Bowl. . . . umm, no.
SF finishing at 28 . . . yuck.
But, here's the money quote:

Tyson Jackson fits New England’s 3-4 and will replace the late Marquise Hill.

:bricks:

Because, of course, the Pats need to pay first-round money for a backup DL. [The sad thing is you could justify the pick, but that's not how you do it.]

If Cason is as good as they say, then the Pats getting him at 19 would be a great choice since it solidifies the secondary in time for Samuel's departure.

Back to Draft Dog again. Same pick, new cr*ppy reasons:

25. New England (from 49ers): Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
Not huge at 6' 2" 288 pounds, but he plays with excellent leverage and is very strong and quick. Dorsey is an excellent pro prospect and will give the Pats a much needed infusion of youth. Dorsey could play any position on the defensive line.

Ummm . . . does this guy know that the Pats use a 3-4, not a 4-3? And, last I checked, the Pats' age problem is at LB, not DL.

Dorsey is a pure 4-3 under tackle in my opinion. He doesn't have the height or enough sand in the back of his pants to play DE for the Pats as anything other than a situational pass rusher.

I really like CB Lowery of San Diego State. If he gets stronger and works on tackling a little better, he could be a decent pro.

He may be dissing our man Warren but if Jackson is there he would be worth looking at. You can never have too many good linemen. Warren may prove to be too expensive to keep long-term if they decide Wilfork at NT is more valuable. Or they could sign Warren, Wilfork draft Jackson and then trade Seymour for several 1st round picks.

You don't win championships with 53 defensive linemen on your roster. :D

Seriously, though, I understand your point, and I'm not mocking the pick per se, but rather the "rationale" for said pick.

You would trade the beast, Seymour, more ome draft picks???? Why?????

You would trade the beast, Seymour, more ome draft picks???? Why?????

Anything is possible, lets say he plays this year and gets banged up putting his performance on par with the 2006 season. He would have two more years left, a trade for 2 or more first round picks would be worth considering.

2008 - 6,826,720
2009 - 9,791,720

Even with one arm for most of the season, he was doubled on nearly every play. Seymour is the real deal. Warren and Colvin don't get 7 sacks in 2006 with Green on the other side. But with a one armed Seymour, they do.

I don't know if Seymour will ever be 100% again, because he has played a lot of football these past 5 years, but Setmour at 90% or 95% is better than most of other 3-4 DE's in this league.
