Adam Schefter reporting that Bethel has been cut by the Eagles for failing a physical - apparently he's struggling to get over a stress fracture of the leg.

Bethel's been spinning around the league since he left us a year ago. I make the Eagles the third team he's been on (Saints, Vikings). He must be in serious danger of dropping off altogether. A shame because the guy had a lot of talent.

speed is the only talent he had

Re: Bethel finished?

do you think the Pats could use him? :singing:

I don't think his hands were too bad. I don't recall him dropping many passes (that one against Seattle was amazing).

His problems were intelligence, route running, toughness, and injuries.

I think he had more than that, but even if not great speed is a great place to start

Re: Bethel finished?

maybe we can convince miami to take him....:D

Maybe he should have picked track instead.

He is textbook proof that amazing speed doesn't mean a whole lot if you don't have the other things it takes to be a good player.

Re: Bethel finished?

The Eagles are reportedly plan to re-sign him later to complete with Jeremy Bloom as a returner.

The Eagles yesterday cut kick returner/wide receiver Bethel Johnson due to his inability to pass a physical after sustaining a stress fracture in his leg during a workout prior to the team's post-draft minicamp in May.

However, team sources said yesterday the plan is to turn around and re-sign Johnson at some point so he can compete with Jeremy Bloom for the job of returning punts and kickoffs.

Then why bother cutting him?

Is it because if the injury got the point where he was out for the season then his salary would be guaranteed.

By the way, look at some of the receivers the Eagles have had in the past few years. James Thrash, Todd Pinkston, Freddie Mitchell, and Bethel Johnson. That is ugly.

Re: Bethel finished?

I believe when he was drafted Bill uttered the often misinterpreted adage "you can't teach speed". In Bethel's case that was certainly true.

Yes, thank you... track star Tony Simmons had the same "talent" - and for that Bobby Grier wasted a 2nd round pick on him.

though he did show promise his rookie year with a 20 ypc average and 20 something receptions... though I think once defenses realized what his capabilities actually were he was easilly shut down... not unlike Bethel

I wouldn't be so critical of Grier here. BB's couple of #2 picks for wideouts have so far not done better than Tony Simmons.

They also reported that the Eagles expect to re-sign Bethel once he's healed and can/will compete with Jeremy Bloom for the KR/PR job.

TO. :bricks:

Re: Bethel finished?

I also think he was quite immature..that he didn't take it all too seriously..but I wish him well.

Re: Bethel finished?

I think he had talent, just wasted it by underachieving.

OK - I might have to stretch but I'm sure I can come up with any number of reasons to be critical of Bobby Grier *cough * Chris Canty * cough* in the future.

Though it was painful to watch as the Pats blew nearly all the picks they got for Parcells as well as their own, its almost comical to go back and look at the drafts from those years - Bobby Grier wasn't the only one with input but I believe he was the primary person "shopping" for groceries and does have ultimate responsibility.

Re: Bethel finished?

The 1998 2nd rounders were brutal, especially as Rutledge was projected to be something like a 6th or 7th rounder. However, Rutledge is still in the league, I believe, and was a contributor as a very good blocking TE to the first Super Bowl squad. Brandon Mitchell had a fairly solid NFL career, and again has a Super Bowl ring. And Faulk was a great pick, though the rest of that draft was useless. Sedrick Shaw was just plain bad, but I always thought Harold Shaw had talent (as did Marrio Grier from back in the day, who ran the ball on the Chattanooga team that featured Terrell Owens at WR). Greg Spires was the only legitimate player after round 2 in any draft (most of them didn't even make it through camp), though Ed Ellis (I remember thinking... who?) is still in the league (Giants) and Scott Rehberg was with the Giants as well either last year or the year before. Sean Morey made a Pro Bowl as a special teamer and then was ignominiously dumped.

Bishop and Simmons have made pretty good careers for themselves in the AFL and CFL, respectively, and Robert Edwards looked like a superstar before that injury, and is now probably the best player in the CFL.

Re: Bethel finished?

I think Bethel would have done a lot better if he wasn't quite so fast. It seems like he never bothered to work hard getting the mental stuff down because he knew he could beat anyone in a race and figured that was enough.

Yeah, then he could play in the NTL. :D
