Is Asante worth it?

I don't agree he would have to be "brain dead".. it shows GREED in CAPITOL letters. He was once "honored" for that tag..but now is "unappreciated"...what a total clown..

Asante is a nice kid. He shouldn't be classified as a clown. If I had the chance to push the envelope a little and turn $8 mil into $40 mil, I would almost surely do it.

I can never fault a player for wanting to make the most he can. All everybody has is their 40 hours, so to speak, and everybody sells them to the highest bidder. Asante wants tg obtain security for his family. He has an older son and cute little girl, last time I saw him. He might have more by now. He is grabbing for the gusto, I just don't think his talent matches his expectations.

If he takes the $8 mil and plays really well, he makes a big score next year. If he sits out for the first 10 games and and collects his $3 mil he may never be able to make that missing $5 mil up. The danger of him not playing well for the last 6 games is too great for him not to play the whole season. If he is serious about sitting he is listening to bad advice.

He's not worth the kind of money he's asking for, niether is Clements, I'm wundering is AS worried he can't replicate the season he had last year so he's trying to cash in now?.I've seen a number of cb's have one big year than never repete including T.Law,I think he had one season with 10 int's and never did it again. I'd like to franchise AS twice just to make a point to these greedy players, but that's not practical,so take a #1 pick for him. To preferably some team on say the level of Detroit. The Pat's will be ok without him.I think Meryweather can play cb if needed.

With all due respect, he may be a real nice kid, but if you can't say he's a clown, you can say he being very clownish. Seriously, his words and actions (not going with the team to NO), speak volumes about who he really is. By any definition, he is decidedly doing more then trying to "push the envelope a little".

Current offers aside, to say he is being disrespected by the Patriots after they tagged him (thus guaranteeing him 1 year of top-5 position pay after demonstrating top-5 performance for arguably 12.5% of his career so far (1/2 a season), is just about 1 step above the "I gotta feed my family" line you so often hear. He is not only not being reasonable, he is undermining his credibility and ANY chances he has to re-join this organization. If he wants out, he will be accomidated. I think the decision has ALREADY been made in the FO.

By poking a stick at the Patriots, ala Branch, he is displaying the same gunslinger attitude of trying to shoot his way out of town. In his position, which is totally different from Branch. I've lost a ton of respect. BB and SP seem ahead of this one too (unlike last year) and they know him better than you or I.

I agree with a lot of this. The JEST are also stiring the pot too  . "Sure SANT, we'd give you 10M for 10years, but those mean ole rottin pats won't trade. We love you long time". Meanwhile, we all know it'd never come to put up/shut up time cus they'd NEVER give up the asking price.

** EDIT ** Nevermind this was later debunked

Shavers sounds like a clown too, I just hope someone there is being reasonable and giving him reasonable advice. Doesn't seem like it.

I think you lost 90% of us with that claim right there. As everyone (but you, evidently) on this board is well aware, financial security is a penstroke away - sign the tender and financial security is his. Since he hasn't signed the tender, financial security is clearly not driving his decision making.

OK, he wants EXTREME financial security. I will never understand what goes through the mind of a pro who turns down $8 mil. I am sure his agent is telling him he can get $80 mil. Who knows, maybe he will, from Washington, but not from NE.

I agree, totally. I don't think skipping the funeral was a good idea, it showed great disrespect and a lack of class.

The Jets are poking the Patsies, and having a good time doing it. Pay back will be a *****, and Belichick likes to get even.

He isn't trying to turn $8 mil into $40 (or $80) mil. The $8 mil figure assumes that he would get seriously hurt this year and never see another dollar. If that were to happen, he wouldn't be seeing the $40 mil either, just the signing bonus part. So in reality he is trying to turn $8 mil guaranteed into $15-20 mil guaranteed.

From what I've read, it seems the agent is giving him good advice: don't be a clown, that doesn't work with the Pats. Asante is talking all this crap against the agent's advice.

Actually, financial security is not what he is after. He's after lots and lots of money. It's called greed. We all share in that desire, to some extent; we just hate to admit it but that's what it is.

If money is your god the MOST important thing in your life and what one truly values then that is all fine..Go for it...but that is PURE greed and nothing else...There are other things more important in life..Sounds like an 07 version of Ty Law's Need to Eat tour...

Greed?? I think not, seems to me he is simply trying to maximize his earning potential and get the best deal he possibly can.

I do not see anything wrong with that at all.

Are you saying you don't do the same where you work?

"Is Asante worth it?"

The question might as well be, "what is Asante worth?"..

Worth the salary of a top 10 corner back? That's questionable, but if he was a true free agent, some team *would* pay top 10 CB money. So either you agree to do that, or you move him/let him go.

Worth breaking the Patriots well established and highly successful model that normally would not pay one player (other than may be a QB, or stud RB) 10% of the total payroll? Probably not.

Asante is a solid corner, and that has real value. But would he be as sold on a lesser talented or weaker "system' team? May be not.

Personally I hope they don't pay him 80,90,100 million over an 8 year deal. I just think the drop of from Asante to the next in line is not as wide a gap in talent as it would be in payroll and during a salary cap era, that makes the price to high.

I hope pats trade him and get a 1st rounder. Like I said before 3 1st rounders next year is AWESOME!!!!!:rocker:

Didn't Troy James have an 8, or 10 interception season? Or was that Deltha O'Neil? Both are servicable CB's, but neither would ever be considered #1 corners. I like Asante, but I remember him being burned far too many times to even think of a $40 million deal (forget $80 mill). I think corner is our thinnest, and weakest position, which is why I want Asante here for this year. However, if he tries to pull a Branch, I'd ship him out of town for a draft pick. I'm sure he'd net a #1 pick. If not, probably a #2+. I wonder if we could trade him to Minny for Winfield? I'd love to do that.

Trade him for someone with potential and either LB or CB or S, and some picks, then get Oliver in the supplemental draft with our second rounder

yes...greedy...maximization of it all..like it is one's god..frankly I could care less if you agree or not..maximizing profits..same as some CEO who gets paid millions of dollars while others get so little...GREED!! It is what it is.....many do not which is why teh difference between rich and poor has grown so much.. If that is HIS value system fine..but THAT is GREEDY!!

Are you saying you don't do the same where you work?

You try and tell your boss you are not coming to work until you get a rediculous amount of money....

See how long you have a job.

I say sign him to a 1 year deal, even if you have to promise not to franchise him next year. This year is too important, and too big of an opportunity to pass up over money that we've already set aside for AS.

Given the way Asante has treated the situation and Billioli have worked so far, I'm going with no. Any chance they'd franchise him again next year?
