ANDRUZZI BATTLING NON-HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMA

Former Browns, Patriots, and Packers offensive lineman Joe Andruzzi has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, according to a release issued by his agent, Joe Linta.

"While this condition is very serious, both Joe and his doctors feel he will quickly be on his way to a full recovery," the release said.

Andruzzi will immediately begin a course of chemotherapy at the Dana Farber Institute in Boston.

"He is being treated by some of the best specialists in the country for his affliction," the release said. "Joe is confident that he could not be in better hands. He would like to thank all of his fans and friends for the tremendous outpouring of support and prayers."

The label "non-Hodgkin's lymphoma" refers to a broad group of cancers of the immune system. Treatment and prognosis depends on the specific form of the disease.

Former Pittsburgh Penguins star Mario Lemieux was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in the early 1990s. He made a full and complete recovery.

The problems he had one year in the offseason with the mystery 'virus' sound exactly like a pre-cursor to this type thing. The immune system can cause you a lot of pain and can attack your body.

He is a fighter so if anyone can beat this, he can.

Good thing he finally knows what it is, and more importantly, his doctors now know what the deal is. That is a big first step, after having 'mystery' symptoms in the past.

Isn't it the same thing Lester had? Didin't he have some back pain that turned out to be related to the cancer, and didn't Andruzzi have mysterious back pain too? I wonder if that was somehow related to the cancer as well, though it seemed pretty long term.

Damn! That sucks. I wish Andruzzi all the best. The guy played with a lot of heart and guts which helped him overcome what he lacked in talent. I hope that that heart and determination is put to good use battling cancer.

Wow, get well soon. Joe always seemed like a great guy, and i was sad to see him go. I still remember the first game after 9/11 when his brothers (FDNY) came to the game. On the bright side he couldn't be at a better place for treatment

On August 27th, 2006 Lester was scratched from his scheduled start against the Oakland Athletics due to a sore back. The following day he was placed on the 15 day disabled list (retroactive to August 24th, 2006), and was sent back to Boston for testing. At the time, Lester's back problems were thought to be the result of a car crash he was involved in on August 18th, 2006. On August 31st it was reported that Lester had been diagnosed with enlarged lymph nodes and was being tested for a variety of ailments, including forms of cancer [3]. I had non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 1987 at 37 yrs old.

It returned in 1989 and I again had to receive chemo,

radiation as well as an autologous bone-marrow transplant,

18 yrs later.....still here :rocker:
