I would say that the colts team is built around Payton Manning. That he is the most important piece in the puzzle. Would you say the same thing about Brady and the Patriots? I know brady is one of the most important players on the team. That is not what I am asking, is the team built around him. We also need to consider salary cap here. Is the pats salary money evenly split 50/50? I am not sure of this. I would presume the colts are weighted extremely weighted towards offense.

The offense is always going to get more salary money, I think, simply because the market for marquee offensive players drive up the cost of top QB/RB/WRs, though I suspect the Patriots play their defensive players quite a bit.

Of our eight top cap 2007 cap hits, six are on defense. Brady and Light are the offensive. I think that this is indeed the patriot philosoph. We pay for defense, for the best QB in football, and for his protector. Of course #9 and #10 are wide receivers.

nope. Our team is never built around 1 player simple as that. although we havent witnessed it..if 1 player goes down..our whole team doesnt collapse

If the offense was built arouind Brady, wouldn't he have had better WRs during his career?

The keystone of the Pats has been defense, and so the Pats could not be built around Brady.

This is not saying he isn't the best on the team. He is. But the team isn't built around him.

I think there are two many starters (25) on a football team to build it around one player. That is more easily done in the NBA.

That said, you can construct an offense around a player, a QB, WR, RB or even maybe a TE. Is that what you mean?

I think the question sounds nice but doesn't really ask anything.

Is the team built around Brady? Isn't every offense built around the QB? Brady just happens to be one of the best, so someone else casually stepping in for him seems less likely.

yep. I was trying to imply that the Patriots weren't built around Brady, where as some teams are built around one player. I think that any team built around one player will not be a great team for more than a few years. The system that the Patriots have is good because it does not hinge on anyone player. its not built to suit a paticular player so they can adapt to numerous different situations. Its an Idea not a person. Thats why I think BB and SP have the right system for long term sucess.

Would you say the Colts are built around Payton, I would. Im not so sure about the Chargers and LT though.

(Patriots minus Brady) >>> (Colts minus Manning).

It does ask something, but it is suppose highlight the Philosphy the Patriots have compared to other teams.

Well I would i have to say no, I think he is a key player, and that if he were to get injured we would be screwed. But by no means is the team built around him. I think you could say that they are trying to do that this year, with moss, welker, and stallworth. They may not be building around him, but i think the patriots are good at trying to put players where they will succeed the most.

Building anything around one person is a bad Idea, because once that person is gone, what you have built is worth nothing. When we look at the patriots we see a solid team, with no one person greater than the whole. Which is why we should expect long term success for the patriots. When I look at some other franchises in the NFL I do not see this. You may have success in the short term, but there will be no longevity to it.

I do agree that the patriots put players in positions where they will succeed. That is one of there great skills

If you truly believe that on this team no one person is more significant than any other portion of the whole, I got some swamp land to sell you.

Belioli have a philosophy, and BB is a master of scheme. But how far do you think that carries them in this league if they didn't have the good fortune (and it was a lucky pick by their own admission) to draft the centerpiece of the whole puzzle that transcends units with the 199th pick of the 2000 draft. 'Cause I guarantee you the system wasn't going to win anything with a $100M statue at the helm. Even with a healthy Rodney Harrison on the field. From the day he first buckled his chinstrap to enter a game, Brady has been THE single most significant difference maker. Rodney btw is a close second, though we've won one without him (albeit with Malloy as the leader of the defense).

When Rodney went down in 2003 and the defense collapsed, his consolation on the sidelines was Ty Law reminding him it would all work out fine because we had over a minute left on the clock and Tom Brady to maneuver us into FG range. Ty knew this from experience. All of his teamates believe in him. He can't do it alone - no one can - but he does more with less and for less than any past or future HOF QB on the planet - and that allows Belioli to persue team building and Belichick to acquire the necessary talent to perform adequately within his schemes. How far they got last season is a testament not only to the scheme but the QB who facilitates it's operation.

Belichick has the luxury of not having to build a team around his QB because he has a QB who is able and willing to adapt to the weapons at his disposal. But confusing that with his not being as significant as say Manning is to Indy would be a mistake. Neither team as presently constructed wins a championship without them. The Pats likely do win more games in the process, because they are a better balanced team with a better overall defense. But at the end of the day, does that really matter?

Thats not what I said, I said no one is bigger than the team not "no one person is more significant than any other portion of the whole,". Not that that makes any sense.

Brady is a key player???? That is the understatement of the Century! Can you imagine any other QB going to the AFC Championship with Caldwell and Gaffney as his Number 1 & 2?

Sorry, but Brady is far more important to his team than P. Manning is to his. P Manning has a A quality OL and top WR's and has always had a stellar running game. Brady meanwhile won two SB's with A. Smith.

Please...are we going to start debating who is better Bledsoe or Brady again :(?????

I just wanna ebd this thread right now because obviously some of ye aren't getting my point and mis reading what I said. I don't Disagree with that ye are saying. Lets stop because this is no where near what I am trying to say.

No. If we lost Brady tomorrow, we would be a much worse team, but the only hole would be at QB. We wouldn't need to make significant changes to any other part of the team. (And I wouldn't throw in the towel at the prospect of finishing the season with Cassel.)

Without Manning, the Colts are done. They are also too heavily invested on offense to survive without manning running up the points.

They are built around Belichick.

yes they are, but in a different way, the patriots want to stretch Brady's abilities as far as possible on offense by spending as little money as possible on it (this year is the exception of course), while diverting the saved money to defensive players, so they built around Brady being able to out score the opposing team single handedly but made it easier for him by giving him a great defense to fall back on if need be (much like a great recieving corp and running back corp has always been there for Manning to fall back on)

Except this year Brady finally has both.
Smart cap management over the years finally allowed the Pats to make a splash in free agency in 2007, getting the best defender on the market, as well as the best wide receivers. And then topping that off with the Moss trade and the Patriots right now are BRISTLING with offensive weapons.

It's going to be a relief I think to finally see a Patriot team where the offense can actually pick up the slack a little bit if the defense is having a bad day.
