Does anyone have any info on the Supplemental draft this year. Who is eligble? When is it being held? Any players that the Patriots may/should/could be interested in?

Re: Supplemental draft.

Has Belichick ever used a pick in the supplemental draft?

Not with the Patriots, I don't know about his CLeveland days.

Re: Supplemental draft.

Who was that linebacker people were talking about in last year's supplimental that the Pats were interested in? Who took him and did he play well?

The Patriots were never interested in Ahmad Brooks. He went to the Bengals (of course he would, he has a history of poor behavior.) I haven't hear anything about him since, so I guess he can't have made that big an impact in his rookie year.

I thought Brooks would be a good fit because of his size/speed and experience in a 3-4 defense. Al Groh must have tipped off BB about his character.

I will continue to watch Brooks, he would be the best young (under 30) LB on the roster with flexibility to play multiple positions (SILB, WILB) and maybe even outside if necessary.

From Peter King http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/peter_king/10/16/mmqb/5.html

"e. Ahmad Brooks, 11 tackles. Rangy and fierce. If Brooks keeps his nose clean for Cincinnati, Marvin Lewis might have added the sideline-to-sideline linebacker he lost when Odell Thurman imploded. "

A reallybig "if" given his past history. But maybe the light will go on.

It really is hard to believe, for us average 'Johnny Lunch Pails', that these guys don't have the light come on much sooner when they are making that much 'cake' and know that it could all dry up overnight.

Re: Supplemental draft.

Neither the Patriots nor the Browns, under Belichick, have used a supplemental pick on a player.

Ju'juan Cherry was a BOOBY Grier pick.

Re: Supplemental draft.

Can't see the Pats bidding more than a 4th for Oliver.

Jared Gaither. OT is a top 5 tackle includeing juniors. next year. has talked about going into the sup draft.

Paul Oliver CB is a top two or three next year amongst top cbs top five if you consider in juniors.

Both could have been first rounders this year. so you are gonna need a little more then a fourth to get one

It might turn out that you'd need a higher pick to WIN. But what I said was that the Patriots won't BID more than a 4th. Taking players in the supplementary draft is quite risky. The percentages are not in favor of success no matter how highly the "draft guides" you cite may rate him, and you can hardly assume the Patriots scouts have the same ratings as some Mel Kiper Jr clones. Just look at Ahmad Brooks as the latest example of the Pats passing on the supplementary draft.

For some reason fans seem to highly overrate the supplementary draft players. There's someone on that forum talking about taking Gaithers with a 2nd round pick. HIGHLY unlikely. The bust potential is even higher in the supplementary than the regular draft which is already a crapshoot. Gaithers could be the next Tony Hollings for all we know. Yeah the Texans look real smart wasting their 2nd rounder on him now. Where is he again? Oh yeah he's not even on their roster. I'll admit that Gaithers is big, strong, and fast for an OL prospect. But the risk is too much to spend a high 1st day pick imo.

If the Pats were really interested in one of the prospects in the supplementary draft they could spend one of their 3rd rounders without hurting their draft next year too much since they have 2 of them. But I doubt they'd go after more than one guy and I still think it's unlikely they would bid higher than a 4th.

NOTE: The Ravens are scheduled to attend University of Nebraska offensive tackle Chris Patrick’s campus workout today. A 6-foot-4, 300-pounder who reportedly has 5.1 speed in the 40-yard dash and projects to guard, Patrick’s application for the supplemental draft was recently approved by the league office.

Other teams expected to attend the workout include: the New York Giants, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins.

I just saw him on Monday Morning. I believe he's with the Hamburg Sea Devils. Or Possibly the Rhein Fire.

Re: Supplemental draft.

Okay, here's Reiss...and yes, somebody else has referenced this in this thread:

2) According to the NFL's official web site regarding last year's supplemental draft, the order of the supplemental draft is "determined by a weighted system that is divided into three groupings. First come the teams that had six or fewer wins last season, followed by non-playoff teams that had more than six wins, followed by the 12 playoff teams." Because the Raiders fall into the first category, that means the Patriots will have one of the first cracks at Oliver if he slips to the third round.

First of all, it appears in a Gil Brandt column, which is certainly not the same as the NFL rulebook. But I think that this is being mis-interpreted by Mike. Logically, it would be the team that falls into that situation, not the pick of the round that was the original property of the team.

In other words, whether the Raiders have the first pick in the round, or the last, they are in the group with the first crack at supplemental picks. Otherwise, why even bother setting up a three-tiered system? The NFL would just award the selection in accordance to the draft order. Their desire is obviously an attempt to help out the weaker teams. So in this specific case, maybe the Raiders forfeit their attempt to be in the first group of the third round bidders, but I doubt that the Patriots go into the pool as a replacement team. More likely the Patriots would be at the front of the line of the playoff teams.

Re: Supplemental draft.

We have

1 (SF)
1
2
3 (OAK)
3
4
5
6
7

next year right?

If we use a third which one do we give up? Our own? And what if a team doesn't have a pick in the particular round, are they automatically bypassed?
