VIDEO: Dogs from Vick house to die
Some of the 66 dogs seized from Michael Vick's property are being held in Chesapeake.

The pit bulls at the center of a high-profile dogfighting investigation in Surry County likely will be euthanized once the investigation is complete, a spokesman for the Humane Society of the United States said Tuesday.

John Goodwin, of the Humane Society, said that "almost 100 percent" of the animals seized in dogfighting investigations are euthanized because they cannot be placed as family pets.

He also said that prolonged dogfighting investigations and trials often lead to higher euthanasia rates among other dogs because the seized animals take up kennel space that is needed to house adoptable pets.

Sixty-six dogs, mostly pit bulls, were seized from a Surry County home last month when a narcotics raid turned up evidence of dog fighting. The home and gated property were owned by NFL star Michael Vick, a Newport News native, and occupied by his cousin, Davon Boddie.

Investigators said many of the dogs were injured or neglected. They are now being held and cared for at undisclosed locations across the area. At least three of them are at the Chesapeake Animal Control Bureau, nursing facial wounds and too timid to walk on a leash.

"These are dogs that have been bred and trained for the purpose of fighting and killing other dogs," said Goodwin, who is the society's deputy manager of animal fighting issues. "We recommend that any dog put through this not be adopted out but be euthanized. The blame for every one of these dog deaths lies squarely on the shoulders of the people who breed them for these illegal purposes."

Surry County Commonwealth's Attorney Gerald G. Poindexter would not comment on the location or the condition of the dogs, but he acknowledged that their presence in animal shelters in the region is taking up space needed for other animals. Because of their dispositions, the trained fighting dogs cannot share kennels - which compounds the shortage of space.

"We've got all these dogs we've got to do something with," he told the Daily Press recently. "We're taking up space in all these kennels. We're inconveniencing other people."

Goodwin said that situation often impacts other dogs that turn up at local shelters.

"When a county is housing a lot of fighting animals, the euthanasia rate for adoptable animals goes up because the fighting dogs are taking up all of the housing," he said. "During the investigation, they might keep the dogs alive for a year or more, taking up 66 kennels that could otherwise be used for dogs that might be adopted out in three or four days. And those adoptable dogs end up getting put down because there is no space for them."

Goodwin says the dogs seized in dogfighting cases are generally kept as evidence for the trial, but because fighting dogs are not suitable for pets, they are usually euthanized after the investigations are complete.

Six years ago, in another Surry County dogfighting case, 33 dogs were seized from the home of Ben Butts. Of those dogs, 10 died while impounded in shelters and 18 were euthanized. Of the other five, four were stolen from the Isle of Wight County Animal Shelter and one was allowed to return to Butts' home because it was not a fighting dog.

Re: Vick's pitbulls to die(because of owner neglect/irresponsiblity)

No, unfortunately the dogs are too far gone... It's like trying to rehabilitate a serial killer or mentally challenged person, no garantees that they won't revert back... A fighting dog will ALWAYS hate other animals and will always try to KILL other animals... A fighting dog will ALWAYS have a extremely high prey drive, which can put moving objects( children on bikes, for example) at risk... The police need stable dogs, not mental cases as your K9 unit...

Not even close. Pitbulls are never trained as police dogs. Shame this will happen to these dogs, but this also is on the persons that commited this crime.

Where on your link does it say that Washignton State Police use only pit bulls on the K9 teams? I couldn't find it.

I have heard of drug- and explosives-sniffing pit bulls, but never a pit bull used for K9 duties. I would think this would lead to lawsuits in a hurry. Where German Shepards are smart and very trainable and stable, pit bulls much less so. A German Shepard can run after a fugitive, stop and hold him without mauling. A put bull is a bad choice for most K9 tasks IMO.

Searching, drug and explosives "sniffing"(as you call it) are apart of K9 duties... Pitbulls also partake in Schultzhund without mauling as well... Pitbulls are very athletic, and have more stamina, and can do demanding jobs longer and can handle the heat better than GSD, Malinois, and rottweilers... Those pitbulls protect our borders, calling them a bad choice because of their breed and not how they handle themselves is insulting... Do you remember the man that was caught crossing the Canadian border into Washington years ago after 9/11? Who do you think helped in aiding in the capture?

Saw that too and thought of Vick. Why do people do that crap? What is it about a "man" that he has to see animals hurt. If Vick was guilty he should be punched in his mouth, not suspended. He's a piece of garbage not a "man". He is an anal pore!

I have lost any respect I had for Michael Vick. I'm an avid pet lover (who owns two cats) and to hear of this garbage that Vick is up to (or anyone for this matter), is very disturbing. If I were a teammate of Vick I would privately and publicly call for him to be cut from the team. The Falcons don't need these types of people and the NFL doesn't need these types of people. Also, I have lost respect for Portis and Samuels as well. They seem like they are as dumb as rocks.

Innocent until proven guilty...lol. More like a ***** head until proven innocent. It will be sad that all these dogs die...because of Vick...I think he is guilty.

Assuming Vick is guilty, no amount of bad fortune is too much for him.

Innocent until proven guilty applies to the American jurisprudence system, NOT to the public.
That being said, killing the dogs will reduce their carbon footprint.

Actually I'm not. WA State uses pitbulls for "narcotics and explosive" dogs. NOT I REPEAT NOT for patrol use which is your K9 units. They NEVER are used as K9 units like I said.

It's just sad to see how heartless people are anymore, for animals and nowadays their fellow man.
Anymore it seems like people are trying to find a loophole or screw someone over on a daily basis to make a buck.
Another popular news item on a role model in sports that doesn't mind hurting someone or something until he is caught.
The shame of professional athletes, and this is the exact reason I'm proud to be a Patriots fan, at least their headlines are positive(or meaningless if your into overhyped athletes like Vick and Portis-minus his Championship Wrestling belt-Cross Dressing Character weekly sitcoms)

Sorry, I'm just enraged at people like Vick and Portis, Giambi and Bonds, and all the other Cheaters and horrible Spokespeople for the Sport

All Pitbulls and the like should be destroyed.

You sir, are a moron. Why should entire breeds and similar breeds be wiped out just because of ignorant people like you ?

Some of the nicest dogs I've ever been around have been Pitbulls, Dobermans, and Rottweillers. It all has to do with how the owners train their animals, not the breed of animal. Grizzly Bears are some of the most ferocious animals in the world, yet some of them work in movies for pete's sake, why ? Because how they were trained.

All dog breeds can be wonderful loving pets, great with children and other animals, IF trained correctly.

Just to educate you a little, You may be too young to remember, but Petey, from the Little Rascals was a Pit Bull. He was around children ALL the time, and there were never any negative incidents. It's not the breed, it's the owner/trainer.

Unfortunately, these dogs have to die because of their scumbag owner.
