I think he rather retire than not be looked at as the go to guy and that's OK, but he could be missing out on playing 2 or 3 more years.

He wasn't the go to guy in Carolina because of Steve Smith, but that didn't seem to bother him. Had he gone to Tennessee or Green Bay I think he would have been at worst a number two receiver, which is what he was last year. I think it came down to money. He said he wasn't going to accept a one year rental deal for vet minimum, he wanted a good contract. Clearly a team wasn't willing to offer that, and I guess he thought it was better to just walk away than come down from his demands and have his pride hurt.

I agree. It seems like it is getting harder for the top players to go out on their own terms.
When I heard that Joe was sent packing to KC I couldn't believe it. I thought if it could happen to him all bets are off.

He still could contribute to a needy team like the Titans. Don't be surprised if he "unretires", if he gets a big enough money offer. It depends on how desperate the Titans get.

I agree, he was a very pleasant surprise. He has the flashy style and ego of a Michael Irvin or Deion Sanders but seems to back it up with more intelligent commentary.

I agree 100% !! I was extremely pleasantly suprised at how much I enjoyed his commentary. A HUGE upgrade over Michael Ebonics Irvin. I couldn't stand that bum. I think he was a fine receiver, not a Hall of Famer, but he had a nice career. He is a nice pickup for ESPN, and makes watching ESPN on Sundays a little easier to take.

I give this guy some credit. I remember him saying about 5 yrs ago he only wanted retire after 10 yrs and a ring. The only part he left out was that it would end after being cut.

Besides the Packers, Johnson said teams expressing interest in him were the Tennessee Titans, Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots. He said a few other teams were interested as well, but he did not name them.

Did you even WATCH the draft ? Keyshawn did an excellent job, interjected with some excellent insights. To even try to compare him to Michael Irvin and other a-hole diva ex-WR's in the media is just an indication of you don't know what you're talking about.

I'm with you. I couldn't care less if a guy has an ego a mile wide as long as he has something worthwhile to contribute. (A real diva is somebody you can't turn away from. Who ever decided not to listen to Maria Callas because she was a diva?)

If Keyshawn can keep the personality and really throw himself into the analysis, he could be huge. Who else is there? John Madden was a rare combination of outsize personality and football acumen. Alas, he's becoming something of a parody of himself these days. Jimmy Johnson can fill the bill when he's inclined. But...Phil Simms has transformed himself into an impeccably professional sports journalist, but isn't a real personality. Deion Sanders and Michael Irvin are too wrapped up in their own fabulousness to realize they need something interesting to say. Steve Young can be insightful but utterly wooden. Bradshaw is content just going for laughs. Joe Theisman has been put out of his misery in the broadcast booth, while Dan Marino ought to be. Shannon Sharpe...well, enough said. A younger guy like Keyshawn could fill a huge void.
