On hand at Campanelli Stadium, along with many other Patriots, for Kevin Faulk’s Celebrity Softall game last night, Maroney was smiling and playful, but was taking it easy physically.

Tedy Bruschi, Benjamin Watson, Rosevelt Colvin, Vince Wilfork, Ty Warren, Ellis Hobbs, Matt Cassel and newcomer Wes Welker, among others, all played in the charity game. Maroney participated, but not with a bat and glove.

He was the umpire.

He probably shouldn't, what I find peculiar here is that he put himself in a position where folks could raise questions about his health.. that seems a bit odd.

Re: Maroney: Doesn’t test shoulder at charity game

It's fun to think that the Patriots' medical staff is conniving enough to purposefully limit Maroney in a charity softball game in order to gain a competitive advantage.

Re: Maroney: Doesn’t test shoulder at charity game

Its still May, I don't care if he can't throw a baseball right now, as long as he can run the football in September.

Re: Maroney: Doesn’t test shoulder at charity game

Still over 2 months until the start of training camp, he'll be fine.

Re: Maroney: Doesn’t test shoulder at charity game

Someone had to be umpire. Why not the youngest guy on the field?

Re: Maroney: Doesn’t test shoulder at charity game

Speaking of youngest ... was this the game that
Chad Jackson was supposed to play in?

Anyone know whether he did?

Re: Maroney: Doesn’t test shoulder at charity game

Never mind.

Maybe he just sucks at softball.

Maybe he just sucks at softball.

Elite NFL running backs tend to have the skills to be good at any athletic endeavor. Maroney is a athletic freak. Doubt he sucks :)

C'mon Laurence, don't be a wimp.

The chances of aggravating that injury are about the same as getting injured in a flag football game on the beach... I mean, c'mon, what could happen? ;)

The more interesting thing to me were his comments that almost made it seem like he thinks Dillon could be coming back:

“He was a good teacher, a good mentor. I was looking foward to playing with him another year or two,” Maroney said, “but I just have to play my game with or without him.”

I was at the game and NO, he did not play. He was on the original list of players to appear, but ultimately did not show up.

Word is he was having a bad hair day.

I read the exact opposite from that passage; that he was looking forward to it, but it is no longer likely.

Dillon's "retirement" is widely regarded as just that - with emphasis on the quotation marks.

If Maroney had said "well I'll just have to play my game without him" I'd agree with you... the fact that he said "I'll just have to play my game with him or without him" sounds to me like Maroney still believes - like nearly everyone else - that Dillon is not "retired" and that there's a possibility he might play his game "with him" rather than "without him".

Me too, there was nothing there that suggested to me that Dillon will be back. "with him (last year) or without him (this year)" is how I read it.
