Assume we could have traded down from #28 to the early 2nd round and taken Harris while still getting the #4 we got to then trade for Moss.

Would you have preferred Harris to fill a need and get a player NOW or push the pick into the future for the upside of SF #1 ?

For me it's definitely the #1 because I think SF is a non playoff team until proven otherwise. Most seem to think they're a playoff team - if that's the case then I would take Harris now . . . but I don't think they are a playoff team.

If next years draft is really that much better than this year's one, than the pick is the better bet. I mean, even if SF gets to the playoffs, their pick would probably be worth like top 15 talent in this year's draft and we can survive with this year's linebacker corps for one more year b/c of the Thomas addition.

The choice between Harris or the SF 2008 #1 comes down to this. Draft a rookie LB with upside who can possibly be a major contributor in 2008- or draft a Top 15 - maybe even Top 10 pick in 2008 who can DEFINATELY be a contributor in 2008.

I felt Harris was a reach in the first round, as he'll need time to grow into the job of an NFL LB. I felt there was a good possiblity of trading back and still getting him if he was available at #28 - because even though I felt he was a reach I still think he's a good player.

I was a little bit surprised that he dropped as far as he did. Moving up to grab him like the Jets did I think was generally wise - but the fact that the Jets moved up twice to go for quality over quantity/quality (as all the picks they had I feel could have given them the quality depth they need) was the wrong strategy.

Don't get me wrong - I don't fault the Jets picks on either player, and I think both will be good - but they need quality depth most of all.

For the Patriots, again selecting Harris at #28 would have been a reach. Much better that they address LB elsewhere (as I think even good rookie LBs need time to develop) and grab a possible Top 15 + pick next year.

I voted SF #1, but I am not sure why we (fans) to this to ourselves. Can't change what is already done, but I suppose it's fun to play

Nothing to do but talk about it now . . . draft's over and training camp is off in the distance :(

:bricks:

Have to defer to the Pats brain trust on this one, if they wanted to they could have gotten him, however their lack of confidence in all the LB's made them believe there would be a better player available next year.

Who let David Harris vote in this poll?

It really does make you ask, more than ever, will we EVER draft a LB in the first round ?

Harris wasn't perfect but he is big and strong, a good team guy, had good timed runs and, still, we didn't take him. I'm OK with that but for once a pretty good fit LB seemed to be there for us and we passed again.

I'm surprised he's not getting more votes. A lot of people liked him seven days ago and there's been a lot of sentiment that SF will be a playoff team (something which I strongly disagree with) so I'm surprised that more people who liked Harris and see the SF #1 being in the 20s aren't voting for Harris.

You're right, but I see the David Harris phenomenon as being driven primarily by the "please God draft a big name linebacker" feeling then by the sense that David Harris was a can't-miss Pats talent at the #28 slot. He wasn't. He was rated as a 2nd round talent at linebacker with "Pats intangibles," which puts him roughly on the Pats board as a late 3rd round value.

Besides the better talent pool next year, the Pats will need another 1st next year more than we need Harris this year.

Good point AJ.

But the question is what would we have wanted. If we could have recieved the 2nd rounder pick this year and taken Harris I would have done that as long as we also got a #2 next year.

ILB is still the position of question in my mind. We have Tedy and Vrable. Now AD may play more ILB. However I do not see a viable ILB on the roster now to come in in case one of those guys goes down with an injury. There were only 2 ILB's in this draft that could come and play our 3-4 as a starter or viable backup, Willis and Harris. All the rest were players that we would have to convert or not up to the level of those two.

Now this may be resolved by picking up a FA. Junior or someone else who can do the job. If that is the case, then the right call was made. I think that will happen.

But right now, I would have felt better if we would have taken Harris.

Harris was an ok player but obviously BB didn't feel that he was a "special" player. The Pats will be in position to draft a special player next year with San Fran's mid-high 1st rounder. That guy might even turn out to be a linebacker... just don't count on it though. :D

I like the idea of trading for next year. Why take a player if you feel the value isn't there? The Niners season could go either way, they could be a playoff team or continue to be medicore. But they do play in a pretty weak division and have made some nice additions in the offseason so far. With that said, I think the Niners will be a 9-7 team at best and a 7-9 team at worst. That would be a lot better than the #28th pick, don't you think?

Realistically you have to wonder how much a rookie LB could contribute in BB's defense. The only answer I see is next to nothing in the base defense and even less in subpackages. Which leaves special teams and BB is not spending a first rounder on a ST guy.
Chad Brown and Beisel, guys that had years of pro coaching, struggled to pick up the system.

It would take an exceptional player to come in at LB and start as a rookie. I did not see that exceptional player in this year's draft. Not even Willis!

If next year's 1st rounder allows BB to take a guy that can contribute as a rookie, like a CB, then we are better off with the pick.

Really, it's more like David Harris or SF's '08 first and Randy Moss.

That is an interesting assumption, but I'd rather take my chances on the 49ers first, and we know NE was able to get Randy with the fourth they got from the 49ers. Also, considering the jets traded up for him I'm pretty sure they would have tried to get infront of NE in that situation.

Maybe people are more rational than you're giving them credit for?
