So why all the one year deals?

One year deals = no risk

One year deals = time to evaluate Jackson.

Would it be smart to guarantee any of the new receivers big money, no. If you can get the upper hand (which most teams cannot) you take it

I don't think it's related.

We sign players to one year deals every year. It's just that this year we've been able to aquire better players.

Stallworth didn't like the money he was being offered in free agency. The Patriots can rent him for a year and Stallworth can earn a big contract. The Pats have the option to keep him if he proves worth it. The same with Washington.

Moss reduced his salary for the Patriots to take him. I doubt the Pats would ever offer a contract that pays $3 million this season and then something like $10 million next season. Any extra year on the contract would have been a low number like this one. He would be under contract for another year at a ridiculously low amount if he plays even close to how he used to. How would that benifit him?

For every one year deal there's been a five year deal. And as I said in another thread, I don't see how any coach would trade picks into the next season if he didn't feel he would be around. I don't care how nice and thoughtful a coach is, I just can't see a coach "weaken" his chance at a Super Bowl win in his final season just to help out the next guy.

I agree, stop the hysteria, we did not even need the draft, we had a superbowl contending team on Friday. Next year's draft is supposed to be a deeper draft, the one year deals make a lot of these guys an opportunity to "play for the contract" avoids complacency, and provides time for deeper evaluation... on and on, the myth about BB leaving for any of these reasons is what it is, a myth and a media perception.

I really wish we could have a system like in Baseball where all contracts are fully guaranteed for multiple years at tens of millions of dollars wheter they guy is good or sucks....

Two words: cap hell, that's where we'd be in a year or two if the Pats signed all these guys to back-loaded, multi-year deals.

The team saw an opportunity to fill their biggest position of need with elite talent. Not draft picks, not JAGs, but ELITE talent. They took adventage of some precieved risks, and got these guys drinking the cool aid.

One of the group will be cut, or will walk away to greener pastures, after the 2007 season. The cap dictates it. We will suffer no hit, and will be free to spend on whichever needs arise next offseason (defensive back? linebacker?).

It's a stroke of genius, we're leasing an elite WR corps, with an option to buy.

not only are they all playing for future contracts but in the patriots system no one player ever stand out unlike the extremes in other systems (Steve Smith) so when it comes to trying to resign some of these players the patriots have a bit of leverage when the quality of play may have been there but not the big time numbers that demand big time dollars

I know. Also, what does Moss or Stallworth having a one year deal have to do with BB's contract status? If he isn't going to be here, what does BB care if the Pats end up in cap hell?

Well, first off, Stallworth's and Washington's deals are 1 year +option years. Also, no one is sure that Moss' contract is ONLY 1 year. Until Reiss reports that its only one year or until Miguel has it on his site that its only one year, its pretty silly to make that assumption.

Also, there are no rumblings. The only "rumblings" are from nimrods who don't know a damn thing about Belichick. And that includes resident know-nothing Danny Boy.

The "rumors" only have substance if you chose to give them substance and you ignore things like the fact that the Patriots now have 2 1st round picks and 2 3rd round picks for 2008. A draft that is supposedly going to be very deep.
