I don't think we've seen any actualt confirmation of that, only that his 07 salary is $3m. it's still possible we are on the hook for $8m or whatever in 08, I haven't read anything that addresses 08 or beyond

I think what has been posted is that lowering the 2 year contract to just a 1 year deal is what is against the CBA.....not taking the pay cut itself.

By having Moss agree to an one-year deal, the Patriots front office left open the possibility of getting a comp pick for him in 2009. If his deal with the Pats have him signed for the 2008 season, the Pats would not get anything for him if they decide to release him before they had to pay the $11.25 million salary.

Because from my reading of the CBA it is possible for a player to agree to shorten his contract.

In the cases where the player gets a signing bonus he is not usually taking a cut in cash received for the year. See Colvin in 2004 and countless other Patriot deals (Brady, Seymour, Dillon). That is not what is happening here.

Moss is taking a salary cut AND a cash cut in the same manner Ted Johnson did one of his contract years.

That's a great point. If he has a phenomenal year, and the Redskins sign him to a huge contract, we can get a fourth or fifth round comp pick in 2009. We could have Moss for a year for nothing, in terms of draft compensation.

Everyone always blames the NFLPA for being weak, but no other union has created so much benefit for their players so quickly.

The NFLPA is smart. They do whatever they can to maximize revenues, then they negotiate as high a cut of those revenues as possible.

If all the NFL players immediately went on permanent strike and formed their own league, 100% owned by the players, they wouldn't earn nearly as much as they do now until long after all the current players were retired.
